Re: Mint 17 Shutdown causes Restart!

I share your problem and your pain! My very standard IBM/Lenovo desktop (Pentium 4) featured the same refusal to stay shut down when I was using Mint 14 and now 17. It didn't matter whether I performed a standard shutdown (Menu/Quit/etc) or did it via the terminal with all the usual commands. With 1...

Re: LMDE Cinnamon won't stay off at powerdown/shutdown

Had the same problem - my desktop running Mint Cinnamon would restart instead of shutdown. It didn't matter whetther I used the normal on-screen shutdown buttons or ALL the various shutdown commands on a terminal. Later found that it was fixed by first unplugging all usb-mounted drives. Unmounting t...

Re: Epson Printers, All In Ones, etc...check here!!!

Thanks
When I use your links, I can see them too!
Using the link from earlier posts, V33 returns nothing. Very puzzling.

Re: Epson Printers, All In Ones, etc...check here!!!

I did look there prior to posting. Looked again just now and followed the links. It still comes up empty for V33. The only Linux drivers I can see there are three relating to the V550. Correction: Looked at the V550 data packages and it seems that two are compatible with V33. Still looking for iscan...

Re: Epson Printers, All In Ones, etc...check here!!!

Where are you sourcing the drivers? I downloaded the drivers from the Epkowa.jp site shown earlier in this thread for my Epson V33 a year or so ago and it works fine. I'm planning to move to Mint 17, but foolishly, didn't keep the deb downloads for the drivers. I just checked the website, but it see...

Re: System restarts instead of shutdown

Thanks for the links - kind-of similar problem. I haven't tried the hibernate selection, but will report if anything new pops up. I will also (separately) try de-selecting all kernels except 3.8.0-19 and see what happens. Cheers Very delayed update on this topic: The hibernate option did not change ...

Re: System restarts instead of shutdown

I may need further guidance here. I couldn't find a bug report that specifically covers the problem I'm experiencing. Could you steer me to it? Also - Synaptic shows that Linux-image-generic 3.8.0-19.30 AND 3.8.0-35.50 AND 3.8.0-35.53 are selected; it also shows that linux-image-extra 3.8.0-19.30 AN...

Re: System restarts instead of shutdown

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll review the bug report before taking the next steps. As suggested earlier, I'll probably revert to an earlier kernel, subject to what I can learn about it. It's not really a disaster for me - I simply power the machine down while it's trying to re-start. I don't like it,...

Re: System restarts instead of shutdown

My system is now using 3.8.0.35.53. I will revert if no obvious solution arises.
However, I'd still like to understand what's gone wrong - and why.

System restarts instead of shutdown <Solved>

Using desktop with Mint 15 Olivia Cinnamon. I installed LibreOffice 4.1.4.2 from an older version from the LibreOffice website. The install seemed normal but I noticed during the install, that a newer kernel was also downloaded by the Synaptic Package Manager. Now, my system will not shut down. It r...

Re: Changing screen font sizes

Some final comments that may assist others who may be blundering along with this problem: I have finally worked out that I can increase the text size on the panel to a reasonable degree via All Settings/Panel/ by selecting the Customised panel size box AND the Scale panel text box. That meets my nee...

Re: Changing screen font sizes

Thanks, I tried all the available screen resolution settings, early in the investigation. I'm currently using the lowest 16:4 setting available to me, though it's only marginally better than the higher ones. The 5:4 settings are noticeably larger but distorted by the screen ratio change - they actua...

Re: Changing screen font sizes

Thanks, Yes - that's what I'm referring to. I did those things first. I set the default font size to what suited me, in the system settings (System Settings/Fonts). I also set the same font size in Firefox (Edit/Preferences/Content/Fonts and Colors) and Thunderbird (Edit/Preferences/Display/Formatti...

Re: Changing screen font sizes

Thanks for your....um thoughts, but: 1 Changing the screen size would have no effect on font size. Zooming works for Firefox and Thunderbird but not for programs which rely entirely on the OS configuration settings. 2 Sitting closer to a screen does not change the optical physics. If it's small, it ...

Changing screen font sizes [solved]

My newly installed Mint uses a default font size too small for my old eyes. I tried changing it in System Settings/Fonts, but it doesn't seem to transfer the setting to the log-in screen, menu bar, Thunderbird, Firefox or Gramps (even though the Gramps documentation claims that the system font size ...

Tried again - this time it accepted the Windows partition then on the next screen gave me the "No root file" message again.
Cheers

Re: can't install from usb drive

Yes - I worked that out eventually. That's why I went back to over-write the Windows partition instead. I figured that because I downloaded the iso while I was using Ubuntu, it would be in tthat partition. So - over-writing a different partition would be OK. I'll give it all another go and report ba...

Re: can't install from usb drive

Tried your Unetbootin suggestion. Downloaded the program (from Ubuntu) and fired it up. Pointed it to the previously downloaded linux Mint image and selected HDD. It put Unetbootin AND Linux Mint onto the GRUB screen. I selected Unetbootin and a live boot of Linux Mint 15 started. When it loaded up,...

can't install from usb drive

I created a usb installer for Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon and, being a wary upgrader, tested it out on a laptop before installing it. I had to interrupt the bootloader to promote the USB drive, but otherwise it installed without issue, replacing the Windows Vista clogging up the laptop. Everything worked...
