Re: Install 20.3 in dual boot gives only grub command line (Solved)
Worked a long time, using the live install version, finally with fsck and e2fsck fixed the corrupted file for the system. Also had selected a partition for the boot record instead of the entire drive. was sda1, should have been just sda.

Install 20.3 in dual boot gives only grub command line
After several tries to install 20.3 over 18.3, in an existing dual boot with win10, I am stumped. I have no idea what to do at the Grub command line. Looking at the partitions in Gparted, what should be the root partition is apparently corrupt. Error listed refers to superblock mismatch, so I ran e2...

Re: Now unable to mount network server shares
Thanks again Altair4. Yes the fstab line is this: //192.168.254.18/music_flac /media/music_flac_vb cifs user=les, pass=nnnn, noauto, user 0 0 But the terminal command does not work: "mount: only root can mount //192.168.254.18/music_flac on /media/music_flac_vb Very strange, since I can get it fro...

Re: Now unable to mount network server shares
Altair4, thanks for the quick response. Now I am confused. I had already added avahi to the server. Added noauto and user to fstab. Tried both the URL and the computer name, with and without .local. No soap, BUT 3 other folders which were not mounting DID mount on reboot, but the music_flac folder s...

18.3 cinnamon control center won't run
Clicking the icon in the menu for System Settings Control Center gets no response. All other icons in the menu do work. I updated and then reinstalled cinnamon control center and its data and gnome control center and data. No improvement. Of course most of the individual settings appear under other ...

Re: Sharing broken between Mint 18.3 machines - SOLVED
altair4.
That did it, at least for these two machines. Still some problems with the two servers: another topic.
Thank you again.
Les

Re: Sharing broken between Mint 18.3 machines
Altair4, Thank you for the reply. Apparently an smb password was missing on Karen's machine, since I now can access the Data directory on that. However, my password on my (Les) machine was and is there, but I cannot access my machine from hers, using either of our user/password combos. I have attach...

Sharing broken between Mint 18.3 machines
I have two Thinkpads on a network with a music server and an NAS which previously were happy sharing files. In the process of upgrading the music server with an Ubuntu headless server, I have damaged the system. To fix it, I wanted to start with getting the two laptops to talk again, then address th...

Re: Python app install give segmentation fault
Solved: As Rene hinted, pip was old. When I ran the command Rene suggested it reported pip was at 8. and should be at 18. So I ran update pip. THEN, when I ran the install.py program it succeeded. Interestingly, the last line in terminal was, "(If a segmentation fault occurs at exit, you can ig...

Thanks for all the interest. The program is Rapid Photo Downloader at https://damonlynch.net/rapid/. It did install fine until I uninstalled it with it running in the background. Re: Python app install give segmentation fault
The kernel is 4.4 something. A clue:(?)
This segfault occurred only after I uninstalled the program, not realizing an instance was still running. That froze the computer, and on rebooting to clear it, the error occurs when I attempt to reinstall the program.

Magic! After fiddling with this it now is working. I can switch from cinnamon to mate and back using the icon on the log in dialog.

It shows Mate, even though I have picked Cinnamon logging on. That's the problem.

Re: Mate menu displaced Cinnamon
Thank you Smurphos. I had run the apt install you suggested, and it ran with two items to auto remove, which I did. I did then reboot the system. You reminded me of the little M or Ci on the login. It was there, but selecting Ci made no apparent difference. The mate menu (mintMenu.py) is still shown...

Mate menu displaced Cinnamon
Fresh upgrade, not clean install, of 18.3 cinnamon from 17.3.
Mate had been used on 17.3. The mate menu and panel are running in 18.3 instead of the desired Cinnamon environment.
How do I get Cinnamon to replace the Mate features?
I can see the Cinnamon packages in Synaptic as Installed.
