Re: What is going on with these level 5 updates?

this shows 3.16.0 is getting updated, but it is still 3.16.0 ... what is going on here? But if you look at the old version and new version columns you can see it's going from 3.16.39-1 to 3.16.43-2. I personally find it confusing that the package name does not change when the kernel has a minor ver...

Re: MATE 1.18 updates

@clem

I got the update to mintmenu today, 5.7.9, and that fixed the issue with it not working when the panel is on the left side of the screen. Thanks! I really appreciate it.

Re: MATE 1.18 updates

ok try to reset your panel then: mate-panel --reset And then logout, log back in. This sort of solved the issue, but not really. I like to keep the panel on the left side of my screen. When I did the reset it moved the panel to the top of the screen (then when I did the reset a second time it moved...

Re: MATE 1.18 updates

Try to test it from git... like this: apt install git git clone https://github.com/linuxmint/mintmenu.git cd mintmenu ./test This should run mintmenu in a window and you should be able to see errors/issues in the terminal if it fails to launch. Thanks for the help. I ran the test version from a ter...

Re: MATE 1.18 updates

Using the Clearlooks controls and ClearlooksRe window border, my title bars are grey, rather than blue, as they should be. Also, icons in the task bar are all vertically cropped (they weren't before the update). I think Clearlooks is not compatible with Gtk3, now that Mate has "upgraded" ...

Re: MATE 1.18 updates

I still can't get mintmenu to work. I disappeared from my panel after the updates yesterday and the latest updates today did not solve the issue. I have mintmenu 5.7.8. If I try to re-add mintmenu using the "add to panel" dialogue, nothing happens. I hit the "add" button and noth...

Re: Bunch of Level 1 updates came through today?

Well, on my system mintMenu is totally broken now, with the 1.18 updates; doesn't even show up in the panel. Also I can't get more than two workspaces, using the settings in the workspace switched applet. Text for icons on the desktop is weirdly black now, instead of white, making it much harder to ...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

cb474 I think the situation is not as bad as it looks, the problem is how the update manager works. If we look at the code: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/blob/master/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/rules banshee|*|2|| firefox|*|2|| thunderbird|*|2|| *language-pack|*|2|| *flashplugin|*|2|| *w...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

Regarding the fact that Debian is considering the updates as stable, you need to go a little farther in the reasoning behind it: 1) Debian has never advised to install all these updates blindly. Or at least I have never seen this written anywhere. 2) I don't think administrators of critical systems...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

And this is precisely why it makes zero sense to to disable security updates by default in LMDE, They are not disabled. Please refer to my screenshots. That's why I don't understand your point. You start with a fact that is not true. You can install LMDE2 in a VB if you want to check. BTW The iso h...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

1) Clem has addressed this question long time ago. It was in 2013. His answer is still valid. http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2013/11/answering-controversy-stability-vs-security-is-something-you-configure/ Again, you're really not reading what I said and responding to things as if I have not already ...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

It looks like the issue how how Mint classifies security updates initially as "unstable" has come up now and again, with respect to regular (Ubuntu based) Mint. Other people also think it doesn't make much sense. See: http://community.linuxmint.com/idea/view/5074 http://community.linuxmint...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

THIS isn't right (maybe just for LMDE2!)!! Well... This is LMDE section and therefore information posted here refer to LMDE. Not to any other editions. :) It would still be interesting to know the thinking behind hiding standard Debian security updates from LMDE users by default... :? Yes, I'd be i...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

Nonetheless, Debian Jessie has already had the security update of the kernel pushed out to the system for end users. In fact, it went out on January 2, well before the public announcement of the security vulnerability. Whereas for some reason it is still being held back as "unstable" by L...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

But that was the first iteration of LMDE, based on Debian Testing (which I don't think gets security updates), with all of the "update pack" silliness of staged updates and instability. LMDE2 gets around all of that by just using Debian Stable. Nonetheless, Debian Jessie has already had t...

Re: Linux Kernel 0day

It was fixed three days ago in LMDE2/Debian... with normal configuration, don't panic! Even though it was not a critical flaw, because it wasn't executed without physical access to the machine... and it needs many minutes to "break" something in any case! If the kernel update isn't availa...

Linux Kernel 0day

Does anyone know if this extremely bad 0day bug in the linux kernel has been patched in LMDE? http://perception-point.io/2016/01/14/analysis-and-exploitation-of-a-linux-kernel-vulnerability-cve-2016-0728/ http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/01/linux-bug-imperils-tens-of-millions-of-pcs-servers-and-...

Re: Updating existing LMDE 1 Systems to LMDE 2

I am totally guessing and not very knowledgeable about these sort of things, but I think that sort of artefact problem tends to be related to display drivers (but again I could be totally wrong). Since basically every package in the system was upgraded with the update, probably the issue has to do w...

Re: Updating existing LMDE 1 Systems to LMDE 2

The issue for me was that I had two sources.list files. There was both /etc/apt/sources.list (which is an older way of doing the sources.list file) and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list (as described in the upgrade tutorial). It's a leftover from Update Pack 7. It's only pr...

Re: Do I Need Texlive?

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I don't use LaTeX. I don't know how I ended up with this. It's not on my other LMDE system, which I use for exactly the same programs. I'll remove it. I did notice that the document files alone are huge. There was one more than 300 MB doc package I saw, when doing the u...
