I have a D300, never had any problems with any Linux distribution. Did you set the USB option in the Cam Menu to MSC Mass Storage instead of MTP/PTP?

Depends i've got GT620 and Nvidia driver is no problem, in fact the nouveau was a problem for me with LMDE, wit Olivia no problems at all.

Uninstall the nouveau driver, this workes for me in this case. You should only use one driver to run your card.

Is package software-sources installed? Try to run it in a Terminal.

Usually you can fix the lists in a Terminal as well in /etc/apt/sources.list or the directory /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

What drivers are installed? What does say? Probably Xorg.1.log

How does your Xorg.conf look like?

Got a D300 and Gimp works fine with the gimp-dcraw plugin.

If you have transferred your .NEF files, you can use Rawstudio or Rawtherapee, check it out.
If you like to build up som HDR-Stuff qtpfsgui may be something for you.

Did you try

Had the same problems with booting the live cd and after the install of LMDE. Live cd refused to boot, black screen... Just a short message about drm and nouveau, but too fast to realize. I've edited the bootoption of the live cd with 'nouveau.modeset=0' at the end right behind quiet splash -- nouve...
