consolidate old backups

I have an old external HD (connected to desktop via USB) which contains several years of backups. These files are in many directories, with multiple duplicates over the years. (For example, the same old picture, copied many times) I understand there is an application for identifying duplicate files,...

old eeePC and Mate [resolved]

This netbook is at least 10 years old (32 bit hardware) and I'm considering loading either Mate or Zorin Lite.
Does anyone have experience with these old laptops?

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

Some folks need to be bigger, better, newer, etc.
Being quite old myself, I don't mind waking up each day and performing adequately.... like my older computers using Mint.

Re: BlackMATE is nice, but...

Thank you, but rather than tax my ageing brain I switched to the 'High Contrast' theme, with similar reading clarity but w/o the stated problem.

BlackMATE is nice, but...

...it screws up the display of the addressbook in TB, darkening every other listing too much.
Is there a work-around?

Re: [SOLVED] Cheap Laptop Suggestions

I've not bought a new computer in about 12 years. Currently I have MATE 19.1 on a 2012 Gateway desktop (free to me after a court-ordered refund related to an ancient eMachine), an HP Elitebook 8530p (excellent heavy laptop using legacy BIOS), and a (newer!!!) Lenovo Ideapad. The Gateway is my everyd...

Re: monitor blanks black {resolved?}

Being a good little boy, my first attempted remedy was to reboot and then leave the computer on all night: neither worked. In the process of cleaning my desk, I un/replugged all wires (power, sound, HDMI, USBs) and the problem disappeared. Apparently a connection became just corroded enough to inter...

I did leave the computer and monitor on all last night, and this morning there was no 'blanking'.

monitor blanks black {resolved?}

My setup is a 9-year old Gateway with a monitor which is about 7 years old. I run Mate 19.1 and the machine has 7 GB RAM, with the OS on an SSD, with the original HD used for backup/timeshift. The Gateway monitor has started blanking (more than a flicker) during its first (roughly) hour of use in th...

Re: ideapad s405 [SOLVED]

Now that I have installed Mint Mate 18.3, I'd like to hear from others who have this lightweight machine.
Perhaps there are improvements for things like battery life, touchpad improvements, etc?

Re: ideapad s405

OK. progress.
After searching I found that f12 brings up a usable boot menu, so my good old Mint 18.3 was inserted. After reboot + f12 Mint is now installing.
Since 19.1 would not boot, do we accuse systemd?

ideapad s405 [SOLVED]

I was given this machine and immediately installed an SSD, then reset BIOS to eliminate SecureBoot and UEFI, but my USB with Mint 19.1 would not open: the Lenovo screen just kept flickering. After two tries I tried MX18 which did load and install. Then I again tried to boot Mint from USB but the scr...
