Re: Past Mint Wallpapers Archive

Sorry for posting in this section, was initially going to put it under Artwork but that had ANOTHER sub section named wallpapers and I don't think anyone will see it under 2 layers of subsections there. :D Not sure about others, but I always view "new posts" rather than wade through all the forum l...

Re: GNOME 3 and Linux Mint

While I'm all for utilizing breakthrough's in processor speeds, memory size, etc I can't help but think that the 2 main DEs are ignoring one of Linux's main strengths - the ability to run on low-end equipment. Even though my machine has a little horsepower, I like running a light environment and wat...

If the data size is relatively small, you could try using an online data storage service.

Re: What can I say............

It's been my experience that every distro has its weaknesses. Most people won't notice them, and they are glaringly obvious to others. That's what makes different distro's work for different people. Sorry to hear that Mint didn't work for you. BTW... And I have tried to make it work again seeking he...

Re: nvidia module failed to load on boot

I've been having the same thing to happen on every boot recently. I have corrected my xorg.conf entries, but it still does it. I suspect it is something in the grub entry as I can drop out to console then startx into my normal resolution

Re: Linux infection proves Windows malware monopoly over:

It doesn't even have to be a virus or malware. If people blindly install every app they think is cool and --force their way through mismatched/incompatible dependencies, they're going to get their system ganked. To expand on a previous statement, not only is security a process, but using a Linux ker...

Re: Four Q's for a Mint Newbie

#4 - have you successfully had any OS or distro use the entire widescreen via the 15-pin VGA port on the TV? I am asking because some widescreen TVs default to 4:3 aspect for everything coming in through the VGA port

Re: Would you like windows with that?

Dell has them. And I believe I saw Acer offering a laptop with linux a while back (but it may have been just a netbook). If you don't mind recert's, geeks.com has no-OS recertified laptops, also.

Re: problem with open gl drivers failing

I had the same thing to happen. It seems that this section in xorg.conf Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" DefaultDepth 24 was causing problems. I changed it to Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" and it worked again. I...

 I forgot about making it executable - guess that's one of those things I do without thinking. At least it got you to the answer, even if in a round-about fashion.

Re: Wine Problem with Mint 9.

It appears that Archive Manager is attempting to open the *.exe file instead of wine. Right click a file and see if "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader" is an option. If not, "Open with Other Application..." will let you input the application name, and also make it the default for those files.

Re: Google ditches Windows on security concerns

If Google wants to break Microsoft, it's only because they want to replace them at the top of the food chain So? You say this as though it's a bad thing, or that Google should be despised for this. Surely you don't think Toyota wouldn't love to see Honda go under, or that Kelloggs doesn't want to s...

Re: Is your computer on/off when your not using it?

I live within 2 miles of a rock quarry. I have to blow out my cases monthly, and I turn off the PCs when I'm not home. I even turn off the power switch to the surge strips for all electronics (PCs, Home Theater, etc) because anything with a power supply/transformer still uses energy even when no load.

Re: Google ditches Windows on security concerns

Is this the same Google that "accidentally" had wi-fi sniffers in the Street Level mapping cars?

No profit-based company does things out of philanthropy. If Google wants to break Microsoft, it's only because they want to replace them at the top of the food chain

Hi Folks

Hello everyone. I've been using Linux for several years, and have tried most major distros. I've mainly stuck to Gentoo the last few years because I like to tweak. Finally got old and cranky enough to decide to use something that works without a lot of operator intervention and remembered how smooth...

Re: Anyone Use Dream Linux?

Well, check it out next month (January) when the 3.5 official release hits the mirrors. Word is, they are switching to wicd for wireless. Funny thing about hardware, you never know which distro is gonna fit yours the best. I have Mandriva and Mint partitions, but I do most of my work in DL because e...

Re: Anyone Use Dream Linux?

Actually, I am here giving Mint the test drive after hearing all the glowing reviews for it on the DreamLinux forum :). <looks around> Yep, Mint has done a super job with Gnome. It is nice to see a 'buntu derivative that runs lean and quick. I think I've found the distro of choice for when I want to...
