Re: Help needed getting SSD temperature displayed

Try having a look through this page:

https://itpeernetwork.intel.com/finding ... -not-scsi/

Try the commands therein; may give you a clue what to look for.

Re: Is booting like this feasible?

For just wanting to "have a look" this is an excellent tutorial to follow: http://tuxtweaks.com/2014/03/create-linux-mint-persistent-live-usb/ The version is getting a bit dated but the process is relevant still. Give it a try, nothing to lose - so long as you aim everything at the right d...

But so far other than that it's fast and looks good.
Try a web search for "linux gksu deprecated". This is now quite old info. It is GONE.

Learn about "pkexec" for the new method of super user privileges.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

I took 18.04 Budgie and 18.04 Mate for a spin on a 'real' partition each on the test machine (UEFI only, 16Gb ram, fast SSD, AMD8 Quad core, Radeon 8510). I have to say I was seriously impressed. Not with the memory footprint so much; Budgie is outrageous IMHO, but the overall improvements in applic...

[SOLVED]-Re: No support for XFS in Mint's Grub?

Thanks @xenopeek, some interesting reading there. It must be more to do with the version of Grub, as some distros using Grub detect the Xfs partition whereas Mint's does not. I might check the version number of grub on each setup when I have a moment? Not that it is a problem as I have standardised ...

No support for XFS in Mint's Grub?

I was just doing a bit of tidying up by removing a couple of old kernels in my Mint 18.3 Xfce system and noticed something I had not seen before about the XFS filesystem. Just wanting to confirm it. This is a multi-boot machine, I use it to support over 200 users and I have about 5 or 6 different di...

Re: Does every distro need grub on multiboot system?

I have 5 hard drives and 4 os's (mint, debian, ubuntu, windows 7). Does every distro need grub installed to work properly? No. One grub, grub4dos or LILO is enough. With EFI-computers you can use rEFInd also. If using UEFI machine to multiboot, no distro actually needs Grub installed. As above, use...

Re: Sylvia Installer always formats swap area

I have experienced the same problem on my support machines; can be a dozen distros installed. It becomes a real issue when any other distro has "RESUME" parameter set in its boot process (usually on kernel line). The system cannot find the UUID for the swap entry in the relevant grub entry...

Re: [SOLVED]-Syntax error puzzling me

Thanks for the guidance - I found an old bash scriping guide I have - and it confirmed the re-direct stuff to be superfluous, as a re-direct of a comparison is not appropriate. Removed the offending piece and it works as expected.

[SOLVED]-Syntax error puzzling me

I am sure there is a very simple explanantion to this problem that is just eluding my weary mind at present? This line in a bash script is not parsing - I think I may have the right bracket in the wrong place? The error message is "couldn't parse this test expression". I would appreciate i...

Re: Compiz doesn't use xfce window decorations

The "traditional" window manager I have always used for Compiz is "Emerald Theme Manager". I am quite surprised Mint does not include it in the repos? Anyway, you can compile it yourself and install from scratch. The process outlined on this site works well: http://chriseiffel.co...

If you want to use time stamped incremental backups that utilize 'rsync' as the tool; I suggest you try 'rsnapshot'. It is an excellent little backup program: "Description-en: local and remote filesystem snapshot utility rsnapshot is an rsync-based filesystem snapshot utility. It can take incre...

I have not used Windows for many years now so I don't know off hand whether "rsync" itself works under it or not. Having said that, once you have set up a profile under "Grsync" you can go to its menu under File --> Rsync Command Line and you will get a little popup showing the u...

Always reverts to speakers. If I recall correctly (not in Mint at present), the standard Cinnamon audio mixer does not ...

Re: Font Pixel Hinting?

My tired old eyes can't handle "scratchy" thin fonts too well, so, I use 'Slight', 'RGB' options + Antialiasing. However, I use my own downloaded fonts: 'Quantico' = variable, 'Envy Code R' = fixed.

Makes quite a big difference on all laptops & LCD monitors.
