Re: Esperanto characters in Mint 18.3

I'm not sure what just happened. I was playing around with the live disc. I didn't seem to have any success, so I shut down and removed the disc, then restarted and brought everything back to its default settings, then tried again. Damn if it didn't start working. Here are the 12 upper and lower cas...

Re: Esperanto characters in Mint 18.3

Thank you, magnus7. I will certainly give it a try. I have the live disc that I purchased from OSdisc back in December. But before I try it, let me see if I understand this process. What do I do with the disc -- insert it and let it load? Then, instead of clicking on 'install', what do I do? If I go...

Re: Esperanto characters in Mint 18.3

I see that no one has an answer for me regarding this little problem. I call it a problem because it was not an issue several years ago. It used to work. Then, I suspect, the Mint developers made a change and suddenly it didn't work anymore. Regrettable. I like Linux Mint. And I like the Mate deskto...

[SOLVED] Esperanto characters in Mint 18.3

I am using Linux Mint 18.3 Mate on a desktop machine. With earlier versions of Linux I was able to type Esperanto characters by the following method: From Control Center, click on 'Keyboard.' From 'Keyboard Preferences,' go to 'Layouts' Tab.' Click on 'Options...', then... 'Adding Esperanto circumfl...

Re: Login window for keyring question

I used to get this login window whenever I used chromium or opera, but never on Firefox. Every time I opened chromium I would have to click on "cancel". The window would disappear, then reappear and I would have to do it a second time. Then when I closed chromium, I would have to do it two more time...

Re: All forums user should reset their password

Just for info for all of you, I am a customer of Lifelock, an identity theft protection service. They just informed me that some of my data had been detected on another website for sale. It turned out to be my current email address and my forum username. I changed both my email and forum passwords. ...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

I've enjoyed reading this “This is when you realize how far Linux has come...” thread. And to Barbados99, thanks for your comments and links. Actually, I can install and configure Linux to my liking with a minimum of problems and I enjoy doing it. But I realize that I'm still a nooby because if some...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

I replaced Mint 17 Mate on my desktop and laptop last weekend with Mint 17.3 Mate. I am completely happy with it. It runs as smooth as clockwork. But I have the same problems with Linux as many of you on this thread. It's too bad there isn't a comprehensive online course available for “casual” Linux...

Re: Heartbleed OpenSSL Bug

I want to thank both eanfrid and kmb42vt for responding. And kmb, you've eased my mind about LM15. I really didn't want to tackle the LM13 install because my ISP is Hughes satellite and bandwidth really is a problem for satellite broadband. Downloading gigabytes of updates for LM13 really would be a...

Re: Heartbleed OpenSSL Bug

Thank you for responding, eanfrid, but you confirmed exactly what I suspected. Now, since it is going to be several months before Mint 17 is released, what danger am I in? Any suggestions? Had I better shut Linux down for a while and return to using Windows until June? That isn't a good solution but...

Re: Heartbleed OpenSSL Bug

No way do I understand all the implications of this "Heartbleed" bug and what fixes are underway and I realize that I have plenty of company in this regard. But I have read that since Ubuntu Linux is vulnerable, then Linux Mint, as a derivation, is also vulnerable and that the OS should be updated. ...

Re: Is it risky using an unsupported version?

Thanks, konjad and passerby. Yes, maybe the gap is more 3 or 4 months than 6. I suppose it would depend on when in January and when in May you are counting from. Sorry. I have a live DVD of Mint 16 Cinnamon. Even though I'm partial to Mate, I could use Cinnamon for a few months if I had to. Just for...

Re: Is it risky using an unsupported version?

I have read the above questions and responses, but I'm still puzzled. I guess I'm still thinking Windows, rather than Linux, but... I have been using Linux Mint 15 Mate for the past six months. I like it and would like to continue using it until the Mint 17 Mate LTS release comes out in May 2014. Ho...

Re: Hello from Mississippi, USA

Hello daveinuk and thanks for your response. I just saw in the System Monitor that I only had two partitions -- / and /home. The swap partition that I made had disappeared. I recall reading somewhere that if you have 4GB or more of RAM, a swap partition is unnecessary. So, since I have 4 GB, I just ...

Hello from Mississippi, USA

Hello, just wanted to say that I am really enjoying Mint 15 MATE. I have tinkered a bit over the years with Linux Mint but never committed to it seriously until a few weeks ago when I began to notice all of the "rave" reviews of Mint 15. I have been using Windows 7. I ordered a refurbished desktop -...
