Re: Ubuntu pandering for cash

I am sorry, but as a GNU/Linux user and supporter since 1998... So which GNU-Linux distro are you currently using? Part of the fun for me is playing with the distros themselves, so it really depends on what I am up to. At the moment, I haven't really been doing much of anything on the computer, so ...

Re: Any reason to upgrade these old computers?

I support a bunch of 7 to 10 year old computers...they're - dual-core boxes - either 2 or 4 gig of memory. - All run Linux Mint 17 (either 32- or 64- bit) with Xfce. - Our users happily perform office tasks, run video, audio, etc. with no problems. - They express no desire or need for fancier inter...

Re: Ubuntu pandering for cash

https://tatwi.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/use_ubuntu_for_nothing_small.jpg The above is what one sees when one chooses not to donate. That's what ended my relationship with Ubuntu when I noticed it a couple years ago (Unity and Shuttleworth I can live without as well). I am sorry, but as a GNU/Linu...

No thanks. I am quite pleased running XFCE again. Looks great with the Mint-X theme!

Workspace Switcher - How to make it look like Gnome 2/XFCE?

Howdy, Sorry to have to ask, by my Google/Duckduckgo-foo and forum search did not turn up a solution to this issue. I've long used Gnome 2 and XFCE as my main desktop, but I decided to modernize and enjoy what Cinnamon has to offer in Mint 17. I love it, it's great, but one thing that I use all the ...

Why not just use gparted?

Don't get me wrong, I'm ok with selling software. I just don't understand what THIS issue is about lol...

Re: Ubuntu and windows, sitting in a tree...

I hear ya Igor. As Ubuntu changes, any distro derived from it will either have to follow suit with all the Ubuntu changes or find themselves spending a lot of time attempting to undo those changes, on top of trying to upgrade their own distro. Seems like a waste of time. Really, what are the benefit...

Re: Internet access slow? Take a look at your host files

For those that may not want to do this on the OS level, the Opera browser offers the same sort "single text file" blocking. Opera is nice in the way that it can use * to block all things such as *.gif (because when has a gif been used for something useful in the last decade? lol...). Could always us...

Re: Valve SteamOS thread

With a fancy grub screen, they could easily do a multi boot mode for a standard DE and one for each game. For big games, put each game in its own loopback file system and boot to it directly. For "casual games", still put them in their own loopback file system (just a great way to make stuff portabl...

Re: Upgrading CPU without re-install (6 to 8 core AMD)

The 1090T is, for and AMD cpu, still very strong and will beat the FX series in many single threaded programs. That said, the 8350 will beat the 1090T in multi threaded programs, while also having newer instruction sets. Anyhoo... demand for your old processor is still pretty high and they are hard ...

Re: Families: Debian vs. Slackware vs. Fedora

The Debian Family: All the distros based on Debian, directly or indirectly Pros: - Simple to install a lot of software, due to the package system. - "Stable" versions are indeed well tested and perform reliably. - Large user base, so answers to most questions are out there to find already, if not m...

Re: How to make LM15 not to mount NTFS partitions?

Before booting the live usb you could try typing this on the grub command line, set GRUB_DONT_AUTODETECT_PART="sda1" where sda1 is your Windows 8 partition. I'm not 100% sure of the syntax there, but the idea comes from: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/grub2-skipping-one-par...

Re: Ubuntu and windows, sitting in a tree...

I would say that a lot of us choose to use a *buntu based distro instead of another distro as a matter of convenience. I certainly am one of those folks who used Slackware for many years, but simply can't justify wasting the time to setup Slackware when I can install a *buntu based distro and have 9...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

There have been lots of examples of companies taking BSD and making a proprietary OS out of it - so far, only Apple has been succesful, and they had to buthcer BSD quite a bit, change the kernel and everything. The Playstation 3 OS is a whopping success for a BSD based operating system. The PS4 wil...

Re: Linux Mint problem after minutes or hours of using it

The 6150SE is still supported as a current model on Nvidia's download section, however on the hardware part it's listed in the legacy section of their website. Version 304 and version 290 of the Linux drivers come up when searching "6150SE" on their site and both driver descriptions include the mode...

Re: synaptic crashes very often in linuxmint 15

I would NOT use synaptic's Settings -> Repositories menu to change the software repositories in Mint 15, Mint has a different "Software Sources" program that seems a LOT better, and the Synaptic 0.80~exp2 seems to mess up the repositories. (1) Add the Ubuntu quantal repository "deb http://archive.u...
