Re: Transfering Files from Win 10 Maintaining File Ownership

I see you have a single family computer shared among the three members of the family. That would be my worst nightmare... Well... it's not quite that bad. This machine will MAINLY be for my wife. I have my own separate machine running Win 10 64-bit, and my son has his own Win 10 64-bit box as well....

Re: Transfering Files from Win 10 Maintaining File Ownership

. Place the files/folders where they need to be; yours in your home folder, mom's in hers, son's in his. Once you get it set like you want it to be open the terminal and type sudo chown -R username:username /home/username/ Replace username with yours for your stuff, mom for her things, son's for hi...

Re: Transfering Files from Win 10 Maintaining File Ownership

Also, I can't PUSH the files from Win 10 into Mint because when I boot in to Win 10, it doesn't even see the Hitachi drive with Mint on in device manager or in the Partition Manager. Windows can't understand any filesystems, like the typical linux ext4 type, other than windows' file systems (=ntfs,...

Re: Transfering Files from Win 10 Maintaining File Ownership

This thread might be of interest: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=267962 Especially this post: I still haven't figured out if this is a Samba question or not. If it is edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line add this one: force user = gs3 Replace gs3 wit...

Re: Transfering Files from Win 10 Maintaining File Ownership

The ntfs file system does not store owner:group and file mode settings so you will have to chown and, if necessary, chmod the files manually after copying them, Thanks for the reply. But if I log in to Mint 19 as Mother, for example, and then mount the Windows drive, and copy the files from the Win...

[SOLVED] Transferring Files from Win 10 Maintaining File Ownership

Would like to move files from Win 10 to Linux Mint 19 while still maintaining the ownership of the files as easily as possible. By that, I mean that I have three user accounts set up in windows 10, namely Father, Mother, and Son. I have Mint 19 set up on a separate drive in that same computer. I hav...

Re: Is It Ok To Move Boot Drive From One Computer To Another? (without reinstalling?)

I just asked that question yesterday, and the resounding answer is yes. pull it out, plug it into any other PC, and it will boot and run. the only caveat seems to be IF, that new PC requires a special video or WiFi driver. Thanks, I guess I should have done a better job of searching. :? Yes I did u...

[SOLVED] Is It Ok To Move Boot Drive From One Computer To Another? (without reinstalling?)

Is it ok to take my hard drive with Mint 19 installed out of computer A and use it as the boot drive in my other computer? It boots up fine in the other computer. I just updated the drivers for it. The thing I noticed is that when I go into the terminal it lists the OTHER computer name that it was p...

Re: Can't Install as Dual Boot Alongside Windows 10 UEFI

Well... I have temporarily "fixed" the problem by unplugging the first hard drive that had windows 10 on it (a 500GB hard drive) and re-installing Mint 19 on to the second hard drive (a 150GB Hard Drive). I got most of the user data off of the windows 10 hard drive. I haven't formatted it yet. Howev...

Re: Can't Install as Dual Boot Alongside Windows 10 UEFI

A common problem with HP . https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=243338&p=1300722#p1300722 Thank you for posting the link. My preference would be to install Mint on the same drive that win 10 is on, but I am not getting that option in the install menu in Mint. Although second choice mig...

Re: Can't Install as Dual Boot Alongside Windows 10 UEFI

Don't you have access to the boot menu ? As the computer is powering on repeatedly press the Esc key until the boot menu appears. Yes, I have access to the boot menu. Unfortunately, none of the options boot into the installed version of mint. I can select my flash drive (the sandisk) and boot live,...

Re: Can't Install as Dual Boot Alongside Windows 10 UEFI

I should also mention at this point I am pretty much fine with wiping win 10 off the machine... as long as I can get the user data off of it.

If I decide to do a clean install what would I need to do to make the disk 1 show up in the mint installer?

Can't Install as Dual Boot Alongside Windows 10 UEFI

I am having problems installing to an I7-3770 running windows 10 that has UEFI (whatever the heck that is). It is a HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF 64-bit There are two HDs in this box. I first tried installing Mint 19 to a second drive (which I am pretty sure was blank) using the "Do Something Else" optio...

Re: Problems With Opera Web Browser Mint 17

That's a very old version, from 2013. The current stable version is 44. Why do you want an old browser? You don't get backwards compatiility in Linux like you do in Windows, and thus cannot expect software to work if it isn't for your Mint release. Even if it did work using old browser releases is ...

Problems With Opera Web Browser Mint 17

Hi Everyone: Opera (my favorite browser) seems to be having some problems. Opera Version 12.16 Build 1860: 1) On cnn.com, the front page loads fine, but SOME pages NEVER load after I click on a link to them (not ALL pages, just some of them). For instance: http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/15/us/april-gira...
