Re: Hard drive has heavy access daily for roughly 20 minutes.

This was always happening, maybe something changed about the files on your system that makes it run longer now for you to notice (e.g. have the kernel source tree on your drive and you'll bloat that mlocate database real quickly - basically anything with a lot of files. Including timeshift snapshot...

Re: Hard drive has heavy access daily for roughly 20 minutes.

Gm10, you rock!

Thank you so much! Mlocate purged! I'll be very happy not to have to deal with this issue anymore.

Although I don't understand... If this is a default install program, why did this only start happening a few months ago?

Re: Hard drive has heavy access daily for roughly 20 minutes.

Well, that would have been the easy solution. Otherwise I'd say check your log files or maybe easier, at the time this occurs check the list of processes in System Monitor. What you can also do is install iotop and then run sudo iotop -o to see what's currently performing heavy input/output. Thank ...

Re: Hard drive has heavy access daily for roughly 20 minutes.

Sounds like you may have Timeshift boot snapshots scheduled and forgot about it. Thank you for your reply gm10. That actually occurred to me to check that, as the disk usage is very similar to using Timeshift when I delete old snapshots and create new ones. However, the bottom of the Timeshift wind...

Hard drive has heavy access daily for roughly 20 minutes.

Hello, I'm running LinuxMint 18.3, and I notice that every time I power on my computer, after a few minutes of LinuxMint booting up there will be heavy hard disk access that is not from the user loading or running anything, that sometimes pauses the system. It usually lasts up to roughly twenty minu...

Re: Bug? 18.2 to 18.3 update does not include new applications

Mystery solved. Thank you for the responses folks. Perhaps an option in the upgrade GUI, disabled by default, to enable new programs to to be installed would make sense?

Awesome! Thank you Cosmo for your help and letting the LinuxMint developers be aware of the lack of documentation of this change.

Re: LM 18.3 Update Manager always shows blue circle

Ok, so I had to manually install Timeshift as the 18.3 upgrade did not do it. But I was otherwise able to make a system snapshot and update each level 3 and 4 update one at a time until they were all done. Re-booted and everything appears to still work correctly. Now I get the green check mark on th...

Bug? 18.2 to 18.3 update does not include new applications - SOLVED

I just noticed that two new applications that are supposedly a part of the default install of 18.3 did not get installed when I upgraded from 18.2.

Timeshift and Redshift.

Perhaps there is more, I just haven't noticed yet. Is this intentional, or a bug?

Re: LM 18.3 Update Manager always shows blue circle

Cosmo, Thank you for your response. That's strange that this new change in how the Update Manager works was not documented in the release notes or announcement of 18.3. I swear I read through all of that and saw nothing about this change. I'd think that this would be a sufficiently important enough ...

LM 18.3 Update Manager always shows blue circle - SOLVED

Since I updated from LM 18.2 to 18.3 and using the default 4.10.0-38 kernel, the Update Manager in the panel always shows the blue circle. Hovering my mouse over it, it says that there are 7 updates available. Opening it up I see a list of level 3 and level 4 updates, but nothing is check marked. Wh...

Re: Sound card suddenly stopped working in LM 18.2 - SOLVED

I opened my computer and pulled the sound card to see if there was bulging and/or leaking capacitors or anything else obviously wrong with it. It all looked good. Put it back in and re-booted and had sound again. The only thing I can figure is perhaps the card needed to be re-seated in its PCI slot ...

Re: Sound card suddenly stopped working in LM 18.2

I've since reflashed the motherboard BIOS, as once in a great while it gets corrupted and falls back to it's stock version. And then re-booted several times. A few times I booted into Windows which also shows no sound card. This doesn't bode well. Although one time when booting into LinuxMint inxi s...

Sound card suddenly stopped working in LM 18.2 - SOLVED

As of today my internal PCI sound card stopped working and I no longer have sound output on my computer. It worked last night and for the last six years flawlessly in LinuxMint with no problems at all. I'm using LinuxMint 18.2 Cinnamon 64-bit. Here's my inxi -Fxz from today: System: Host: TWO Kernel...

Re: Network printer stopped working in LM 18.2 - SOLVED

There is often a method to factory reset using a sequence of buttons on a printer, e.g. power-up while holding down "X". Any chance the printer was reset in that manner? Yes, that is indeed how the network default settings are reset through the single front button plus power switch combination, plu...

Re: Network printer stopped working in LM 18.2 - SOLVED

Thank you ClixTrix for your help and for pointing me in the right direction. This was not a LinuxMint problem at all. My printer is ethernet/wired to my network switch which was setup by myself many years ago with a fixed address 192.168.0.100. And once I realized that pinging it was not responding ...

Went further past the terminal entry in the troubleshoot and it finally gave me some output. I apologize as it is really long and I don't know what's relevant and what is not. Network printer stopped working in LM 18.2 - SOLVED

My previously working Brother HL-2170W laser printer (connected via network cable), in LinuxMint 18.2 Cinnamon 64-bit, has now stopped working. I don't know how to diagnose this. It was working when I installed 18.2, and now does not, so my assumption is that an update broke some software. inxi -Fxz...

Re: Adobe Flash update authentication warning

I've been running LinuxMint with Adobe Flash plus it's dependencies uninstalled for several weeks now with no problems. And so far no further packages have had this authentication warning issue. At this point I consider this a good work around as long as you don't need Adobe Flash. I don't though co...

Re: Adobe Flash update authentication warning

Thank you for your response karichen. What about just uninstalling it? I don't use and disable it in Firefox anyways. My only concern is that when I go to do that Synaptic Package Manager says it also has to uninstall: "mint-meta-codecs" and "mint-meta-codecs-core" Will this impact other multimedia ...
