Unfortunately it is a desktop, an old Dell Inspiron.
If this keeps happening I'll just try another desktop. I have a partition just for trying distros.
Thank you, once again!

Re: Stuck on lock screen after idle
Hi WharfRat, I don't have that on my Startup Applications. I have mintUpdate, mintUpload, mintWelcome and a couple of applications I added there for other purposes. Would Power Management and Screensaver be embedded on any of those? I have returned the "turn off monitor when idle" setting ...

Re: Stuck on lock screen after idle
I'm back... disabled the "monitor to sleep after 10 minutes idle" thing and now what happens is that the screen is not locked, but it is completely unresponsible.
Ctrl+Alt+F1, restart mdm, all the time.
This sucks.

Re: Stuck on lock screen after idle
Oh sorry, yeah, I use Cinnamon.
I have just increased the "inactive time" to "Never". If the issue goes away, that could be it.
Thanks for the tip.

Re: Stuck on lock screen after idle
I couldn't find that screen on my system, my Screensaver config screen is like the attachment to this post. Luckily the "sudo service mdm restart" thing works like a charm. At least I don't have to reboot it anymore. Still, it puzzles me how the lock screen can come up if I have it complet...

Re: Stuck on lock screen after idle
Always you, WharfRat. You are awesome. I don't remember seeing this screen yet, so the answer may be there. I'll try it and see how it goes. Thank you!

Stuck on lock screen after idle
Hi there, I've posted this in the past and haven't got any responses, I'm posting it again to see if someone else is having this problem now. I have my screen lock turned off, I have it disabled also via dconf-editor, but still, every now and then I'll turn on my monitor and have the lock screen the...

Re: Stuck on clock screen
That's exactly what I did when I turned it off.
Isn't there a way to unlock the screen? Some keyboard shortcut?

Re: Stuck on clock screen
Yeah, that's what I did, and it didn't work apparently. I mean, it's not asking for the pwd anymore, but it's locking the screen.

Stuck on clock screen
I've installed LM16 today and everything is going smooth - except for the fact that if I leave the computer unattended for a while, it gets locked with a dimmed screen with the time and date. First it would ask for the password, then I provided it, the password box would be gone and nothing would ha...

Re: SOLVED- Mint 16 - no HDMI Output sound (Acer Aspire 6930
I did everything on this thread and the problem persists. Actually when I click on the sound icon on the system tray, the HDMI device shows up. I can select it, but no sound happens. If I open the Sound Settings window, the HDMI will not be there. Edit: fixed the problem. I actually upgraded from LM...

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
Same thing. I deleted one or two of those 0-byte files just to see if they were indeed being restored as files every time or if they were restored as files once and for some reason tar wasn't restoring them again. Turns out they are being extracted every time as files, not as symbolic links. If I is...

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
Damn, it's root/root but with no permissions (000?)
I did some research and it seems all of the files like that were symbolic links before. They appear as symbolic links on the tar file, but were extracted as simple files.

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
Hey! So, new developments. I was able to restore my old backup file, skipping the corruptions. Turns out the corrupted file was something really irrelevant. Now, I have logged in recovery mode and ran "tar xvpf backup.tar". Everything looked great. Rebooted it. Again, X errors, but this ti...

Great! I didn't get at first the loop mount thing, that would serve to my purpose.
Thank you for all the help WharfRat, cheers!

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
What's the advantage of this method? The speed? Because with the method I'm using I would be able to restore a bunch of files only, I think it's more flexible.
Of course, if the file is not corrupted
but that could happen with any file.

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
Thanks WharfRat, yeah, I didn't think I would get away with this. Lesson learned: *test* your backup files from now on. :) By the way, I already had a separate /home partition. If I go for a clean install on a formatted / , having the old /home would get me some of my old program configurations back...

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
When I said the system was brought up I meant that I was able to login and use it graphically, sorry for not being more clear. Edit: and by using it graphically I mean it brings up the "software rendering mode", which is really slow, but still usable. Yeah, so that kernel header package is...

Re: Can't login after distr-upgrade from 15 to 16
Oh, boy. Things are just a mess. Couldn't do much about the video problem, so I thought I would restore the backup file. The file was corrupted. Tried bzip2restore but it has a limit of 50000 blocks and I would need to recompile bzip2recover with a different value for the max_blocks variable. Google...

Thank you so much, WharfRat. I'll post here with the results later.
