That's the menu I use. What I said above works for me.

Re: Increasing the main menu button width

You could try looking in usr/share/icons/Mint-X [or other theme]/places/24 [or other pixel size if using a wider panel] and then changing the "start-here" icon for one of your choosing.

Re: How to get Atril to open maximized

If you start it by clicking on whatever file you want to open in it you can make it start maximised and indeed at whatever page of the document you were last on because it appears to store the settings for individual files. So I put a location launcher for whatever pdf book I'm reading on the desktop.

Applications Slow To Open

Using Mint 17 Mate. My PC is old and low specced but compared to Ubuntu Mate 14.04 (ie the same Ubuntu base) set up in an identical a way as possible, things like firefox, libreoffice, Caja, probably just about everything takes noticeably longer to open on first time of use after start up. eg firefo...

I was thinking there were 2 USB sticks involved and he was copying from one to the other but maybe not.

Re: the dd command

As things stand, I seem to be defeated by the space in 'USB Stick' - or is this a red herring? I believe using DD you need to put USB\ Stick so if I've understood what you're trying to do correctly (and I've typed it correctly) the whole command should be dd if=/media/gam/USB\ Stick/linuxmint-17.1-...

Re: How to remove compiz the LM 17.1 XFce?

I tend to remove lots of stuff in Mint I don't use just so as to avoid wasting time with future updates. I removed compiz from the MATE version of 17.1 via synaptic. Can't remember what other packages it also removed along with it but everything still worked fine after.

Re: Libre Office Calc question Mint 17.1?

To edit a read only file, right click it in your file manager and select "open as administrator". At leats that's what you can do with Mate. I presume Cinnamon has a similar thing. Which theme are you using that gives you the problem?

Re: Libre Office Calc question Mint 17.1?

Well if you're not using that theme then it won't help you finding it. But you might be able to do a similar thing with whatever theme you are using. But for a starting point I'd try changing to a few different themes and see if that fixes it first.

Re: Libre Office Calc question Mint 17.1?

Are you using the default Mint-X theme? If so, find the /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file and look for a line starting with GtkScrollbar::slider-width . Try increasing the value at the end of that line to something like 15 if it's lower than that. I'm pretty sure that's the edit I did to f...

Re: Suspend kills wifi

Does using the command rmmod instead of the modprobe -r command given above work? So... sudo rmmod ath9k && sudo modprobe ath9k after suspend. That's what worked for me. Otherwise maybe using an older kernel may work rather than a newer one because my wifi was fine in Mint 15 and whatever kernel tha...

Re: Change Application Icons

If WPS/Kingsoft is the same as Libreoffice then I think the icons you mean are controlled by whatever icon theme you use for its toolbars and menus and set from the view options within the application itself rather than the global icon theme for Mint. Can you change the icon theme to the one you wan...

Re: Rename Quit Button - Mate Desktop

Do you mean the button on the Mint Menu? The one on what's called Main Mate Menu in the "add to panel" list says shutdown instead of quit if you'd want to use that menu instead. Or there's also a neat individual shutdown button in the same list.

Re: Cinnamon window placement options

It doesn't just need a centering option. It needs a "remember position and size" option. Certainly one of the things I miss from Windows. Although Mate makes a pretty good effort... caja, libre office and the document viewer for example (maybe more) stay where you put them for next time. Other appli...

As well as a backup strategy for your personal data a prevention strategy is a good thing to have to avoid breaking your operating system in the first place. Read the user guide if you are new to Linux Mint: http://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php I really think the user guide (if it's the same as when I skimmed through it a few months ago) needs a complete rew...
