Hi Piotr

Download error - This Link needs to be opened with an application

I have just installed Mint 19 MATE on my new laptop (Lenovo X1 Carbon). when I download a .deb file, and the download is completed, I click to open and then get 'Launch application - this link needs to be opened with an application.' A dialog box offers me the chance to choose an application. Clicki...

prioritising wifi networks

I want to set things up so that all clients connect to a preferred wifi network (and not to a segregated guest network). There seems to be no way of doing this thorugh Start > preferences > Nework Connections. Searching around I came across this link from Ask Ubuntu https://askubuntu.com/questions/1...

Re: No sound from speakers

UPDATE => Ive tried with a cheap PCI sound card as well. This
1) gives a really poor quality sound
2) cuts out unless PAvucontrol is open!

Ive, reinstalled PAvucontrol and Alsa BTW, no change

No sound from speakers

Hi all can anyone help me troubleshoot this. I have on-board sound from an Asus M5A97 board and nothing comes from the speakers at all. Nothing is muted in Alsamixer which seems to show a Realtek ALC887 Vd chip. Pavucontrol shows 'built in audio' correctly but nothing I can do generates a sound from...

Re: [SOLVED]Update Manager - Upgrade - Update

Re update and upgrade from the terminal.. It is quite correct that it breaks the prioritisation set in the Update Manager GUI and downloads everything. However I've done this for a while now and never had any issues. I have to use terminal because I installed GRSecurity on my boxes and some of the s...

Re: So why no security sub-forum in these forums ?

Definitely support a security forum. I worry that people think that Linux doesn’t have the vulnerabilities that other Os's do. And while Linus Torvalds is undoubtedly a genius, I think he sometimes underplays security issues. As an example of the kind of vulnerabilities which exist in Linux - try th...

Re: Can linux mint team can reactivate Nanny parental contro

Gnome Nanny is what most of us parents are looking for. I'm already using OpenDNS to block sites, so mintNanny does not add any value. I need something that limits the usage time on a computer. Please revive the Gnome Nanny project and add it into Mint. The Nanny project is dead and attempts to rep...

Re: Advice on future PC for Mint

Forget the spinning metal HDD, get an SSD. A platter drive will strangle the performance of your otherwise good computer. I/O is a serious bottleneck with old style hard drives. I would go with 16GB of ram in a new build. 8GB is not really all that much anymore and ram is cheap. 2x not so good advi...

Re: ThinkPad trackpoint configurtion speed => SOLVED

The solution I came up with was to add the xset m 4/1 0 into start up applications so it persists across a reboot Preferences > startup applications > Add > (paste in command and give it a name) > Add This is worth stating because if you google for this issue there is an awful lot of old stuff using...

One way to have this command automatically executed during startup is to have this command always execute at startup by doing the following: left click Menu left click Preferences left click Startup Applications left click add in Startup Applications screen left click Custom Command in drop down bo...

Re: System Settings > Mouse doesn't affect pointer tracking speed

Your post helped me out - like you I could not get the trackpoint to move quickly enough.
MY QUESTION.....how did you make that command persist across a reboot? or do you have to enter it into the terminal for each session?

ThinkPad trackpoint configurtion speed => SOLVED

can anyone tell me how to make this faster and more sensitive - I've been searching and there seem plenty of methods, none of which work on my X300 running 17.3 MATE. Ive tried downloading gointing-device-setting but this has no effect. Then I created udev rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/10-trackpoint.co...

Re: Wireless router recommendation

I totally recommend the Linksys WRT1900AC. It is well supported by the open-source Open WRT firmware...The only drawback is that this requires you to buy a separate hardware modem too, but I don't actually regard that as a bad thing. I got a cheap Draytek from eBay

Re: Cannot connect to my Galaxy S5

I didn't actually solve this one, but by reverting to 17.3 - with the associated GRSecutity patch the issue was resolved. It may well be that a different configuration of GRSecurity was the root of the issue of course..
