Re: Web Content, CPU, Cursor

As I move the cursor smoothly toward a button, it pauses then catches up, causing me to over-shoot the button. It's as though processing web content is prioritized above cursor movement.

Web Content, CPU, Cursor

I often get high-ish CPU while browsing with Firefox that causes the cursor to jump. I think it's probably javascript at sites like facebook (I read it for the articles) where blocking javascript would break the site. CPU is high but not maxed. I would have thought the cursor would have priority. Th...

Re: mDNS fails regularly; requires avahi-daemon restart

Well, maybe it helped but mDNS failure is still happening. I don't know what "multiuser runlevels" are but I guess I don't have enough of them.

Sometimes it takes more than one avahi-daemon restart to restore functionality.

mDNS fails regularly; requires avahi-daemon restart

I still have this problem: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=157&t=313110&p=1787915#p1787915 Right after restarting all the computers on my LAN, local name resolution works. After a day or so, it breaks on one machine or another; can't ping *.local and backups fail. Functionality is resto...

Re: DNS on LAN requires multiple restarts

Yes, something is wrong with avahi. When ComputerA can't ping ComputerB by name, function is restored by restarting Avahi on ComputerB, but not by restarting it on ComputerA. sudo service avahi-daemon restart I've done it a few times. It's whacky. Variously, A can't ping B but C can. B can ping both...

Re: DNS on LAN requires multiple restarts

Well, I probably know less than anyone but I assumed 127.0.0.53 means it's going to systemd's server. 209.222.18.222 is the VPN. I do have Comcast.

Re: DNS on LAN requires multiple restarts

My two LM 19 computers seems to be resolving DNS with systemd's 127.0.0.53. >>> dig +trace jenxps.local ; <<>> DiG 9.11.3-1ubuntu1.11-Ubuntu <<>> +trace jenxps.local ;; global options: +cmd ;; Received 51 bytes from 127.0.0.53#53(127.0.0.53) in 0 ms My LM 18 backup server is using VPN DNS. >>> dig +...

Re: DNS on LAN requires multiple restarts

Still having this problem. Usually it it the LM 19.1 machine that I can't ping by name. Today is was the LM 19.3 machine. Had to restart twice. This is annoying because automatic backups don't run. They used to work fine. What's changed in the last year: 1) New Comcast modem 2) Upgraded one machine ...

DNS on LAN requires multiple restarts

Name resolution on my LAN breaks regularly. The only way I've found to fix it is restarting all the machines. Often, at least one of the machines has be restarted more than once. I always eventually get it working by restarting. Names are of the form 'computer1.local'. I have three machines on the l...

Google Provider fails after update Thunderbird 68.2.1 [solved]

I use Thunderbird Lightning for calendar and Provider for Google Calendar gets me access to my google calendar. After the recent upgrade to TB 68.2.1, any calendar access, including starting TB, pops up a google oauth (I think) window that complains about cookies. (see attached screenshot) I tried a...

home dir .aptitude appears [solved]

Why is there suddenly (couple of weeks ago) a root owned directory in home called .aptitude? Is it safe? Do I need it?

I noticed it because it causes a Permission Denied error in my backups.

Re: LuckyBackup rsync: Name or service unknown

Thanks but that was not it.

A literal ready of the error suggested that my computer name was unknown. A full network cold start (modem, router, computers) did the trick. I had previously restarted the computers but that was apparently not sufficient.

ffmpeg fails to capture, library configuration mismatch

This worked a week or two ago. The only change I can think of would be updates to Mint. Using ffmpeg to capture audio/video via Hauppauge USB-Live2 from VHS. As per this procedure ( http://tedfelix.com/linux/hauppauge-usb-live-2-linux.html ) I can see the video with ffplay -f video4linux2 /dev/video...

Re: gksudo luckybackup permission denied

I figured it out. The main thing I had to do was run LB remotely as the user I was backing up*. The user owns all his files so when he runs LB there are no permission problems. LB has two ways of doing this - Remote Module and SSH. RM looked easier though less secure; I am fine with the security lev...

gdk error in terminal using xed

Whenever I call xed from the terminal it spews errors like: (xed:5294): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 18:16:13.993: gdk_window_get_window_type: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed It does not seem to cause a problem but it annoys.
