Stop trying to mount already!

A USB drive apparently went bad. It keeps trying to mount, over and over, popping up "cannot read superblock" in new popups. I am happy to reformat the whole thing if I could get it to stop trying to mount. I can only stop it by pulling the drive. Is there a way to get the system to stop trying to m...

Re: Black screen, no boot options after update

Boot mode=UEFI; SecureBoot=Off
1) ubuntu
2) Windows Boot Manager

Is that what you mean? (see attached)

I can get to Windows this way but ubuntu goes to black screen.

Re: Black screen, no boot options after update

When I try to boot, I get black screen after Dell logo. Nothing ever happens. I've tried waiting, typing return, Esc, moving the cursor. Nothing. It just sits there at black screen. Thanks to your suggestion, I can get it to boot by repeatedly tapping Esc at the Dell logo. BUT it's tricky. Tapping o...

Re: Black screen, no boot options after update

I attached the Update History for 11/29, which is when the problem occurred. See anything that might have caused the problem?

Re: Black screen, no boot options after update

Thanks. The most helpful bit there was "at the Dell logo."* I reverted to the previous kernel but the problem persists at boot. I can get to Linux now though. So something other than the kernel must be the problem, I guess. *I had to use Esc instead of Shift (read that somewhere). And I have to time...

Black screen, no boot options after update

I just ran Update Manager and cycled the power on my laptop. I didn't pay close attention to the list of updates. Now when I power up I get the Dell logo and then a black screen. Nothing ever happens. Sadly, I have not setup Timeshift. I can boot to a live USB. Mint 18.3 Mate Dell XPS 13 Windows 10 ...

Side panel yet? [solved]

Did we ever debug moving the panel from the bottom to the side? I'm still at 17.3, looking for an excuse to upgrade. Last time I tried it was extremely buggy. After a couple of clicks it was broken, requiring complicated reset, new user profile or some such.

gksudo time limit [solved]

With sudo I can enter my password and retain elevated privileges for a while. gksudo requires that I enter my password each time. Can I change that? I have a script that executes three umount/mount commands. I assigned it to a keyboard shortcut so I have to use gksudo. I don't want to have to enter ...

Re: Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery Disk

I figured it out. The "wrong" usb that Windows touched was causing the problem. I had ejected it, but there was still an fstab entry. I removed the fstab entry and I am able to boot to Windows and Linux again. So, something about it being a windows recovery drive made grub think it had to be readabl...

Re: Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery Disk

Attached. Thanks for the help. More info: I redid Create Recovery Disk in Windows 10. It is a long process and when I returned the first time the computer had gone to sleep. I changed power options and redid it. This time I got to the Finish button. Before when I woke it up I had to Cancel. It did n...

New data point: I'm getting a TPM self test failure at emergency mode.

Also, I ran a disk check on "/" but that did not fix it.

Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery [solved] Disk

I had Windows 10 Create Recovery USB. I said yes to Delete the recovery partition from your PC. Now when I boot and try to go to Linux I get Welcome to emergency mode. Windows still boots. I did a live boot and it looks like my Linux system is still there, along with windows, on my internal SSD. I'm...

Re: gksudo error but not with sudo

OK. I thought I needed gksudo in scripts. Apparently it was just the particular commands I was executing in scripts, that I used as templates.
Thanks.
