Side panel yet? [solved]

Did we ever debug moving the panel from the bottom to the side? I'm still at 17.3, looking for an excuse to upgrade. Last time I tried it was extremely buggy. After a couple of clicks it was broken, requiring complicated reset, new user profile or some such.

gksudo time limit [solved]

With sudo I can enter my password and retain elevated privileges for a while. gksudo requires that I enter my password each time. Can I change that? I have a script that executes three umount/mount commands. I assigned it to a keyboard shortcut so I have to use gksudo. I don't want to have to enter ...

Re: Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery Disk

I figured it out. The "wrong" usb that Windows touched was causing the problem. I had ejected it, but there was still an fstab entry. I removed the fstab entry and I am able to boot to Windows and Linux again. So, something about it being a windows recovery drive made grub think it had to be readabl...

Re: Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery Disk

Attached. Thanks for the help. More info: I redid Create Recovery Disk in Windows 10. It is a long process and when I returned the first time the computer had gone to sleep. I changed power options and redid it. This time I got to the Finish button. Before when I woke it up I had to Cancel. It did n...

Re: Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery Disk

New data point: I'm getting a TPM self test failure at emergency mode.

Also, I ran a disk check on "/" but that did not fix it.

Linux Emergency Mode after Windows Create Recovery [solved] Disk

I had Windows 10 Create Recovery USB. I said yes to Delete the recovery partition from your PC. Now when I boot and try to go to Linux I get Welcome to emergency mode. Windows still boots. I did a live boot and it looks like my Linux system is still there, along with windows, on my internal SSD. I'm...

Re: gksudo error but not with sudo

OK. I thought I needed gksudo in scripts. Apparently it was just the particular commands I was executing in scripts, that I used as templates.
Thanks.

gksudo error but not with sudo {SOLVED]

When I try to execute

Code: Select all

   gksudo umount -f /media/flash124
I get

Code: Select all

   "gksudo: invalid option -- 'f' "
but sudo works fine

Code: Select all

   sudo umount -f /media/flash124
I need gksudo so I can put it in a script and get popup authentication.

How to Install virtualbox [SOLVED]

I installed virtualbox(vb) nonfree from Software Manager (SM). Launched vb and created a Windows 7 64 bit machine. But when I started the machine expecting to get he OS install wizard I got error about first installing DKMS. Installed vb-dkms. It warned it would remove vb and I proceeded. vb non-fre...

ntfs to ext4, how to fstab

(This is where fstab questions seem to land but I'll move it if appropriate.) I want to replace my ntfs archive drive with ext4, keeping same mount point and all. Current fstab UUID=573173997666ABCE /media/2BasementBackup ntfs defaults,nls=utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,windows_names 0 0 Would a generic fs...

Re: Network manager Edit Connections bugs

Thanks. I didn't think I was going to get a response on that one.

All I can think to say is, "Wow, somebody thought it would be a good idea to create a GUI, accept user input, and then scramble what the user just typed using a secret decoder ring."

Re: Boot fails unless non-boot USB connected

Fixed by setting Advanced BIOS Option to Enable Legacy Option ROMs. I don't know why. In Boot Sequence I chose UEFI over Legacy. I say "fixed" but only after: deleting all partitions writing zeros to the entire disk creating a new single partition (still got warned that another OS was detected and w...

Re: Boot fails unless non-boot USB connected

My bad re 'aufs'. I did a live boot. Re-doing, booting the internal OS, "/" is on /dev/sdb. I did the grub install to sdb and update but the behavior did not change. I might just resign myself to keeping the USB plugged in but it's making noise and I fear it's failing. The comment in fstab # / was o...

Re: can't ping by name; affecting autofs?

Thanks for the reply. I fixed it. Just wish I understood what I did. What I did: add user "guest" to auto.sambashares. I started sharing via Guest and took user, password out of auto.sambashares. Adding 'guest' was a necessary but not sufficient condition. xpsLinHome -fstype=cifs,rw, guest ,uid=1000...
