Re: gksudo luckybackup permission denied

I figured it out. The main thing I had to do was run LB remotely as the user I was backing up*. The user owns all his files so when he runs LB there are no permission problems. LB has two ways of doing this - Remote Module and SSH. RM looked easier though less secure; I am fine with the security lev...

gdk error in terminal using xed

Whenever I call xed from the terminal it spews errors like: (xed:5294): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 18:16:13.993: gdk_window_get_window_type: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed It does not seem to cause a problem but it annoys. If I edit the same file via caja right-click I wouldn't know anything is wro...

luckybackup rsync daemon: chdir failed [solved]

I'm trying to set up luckybackup to remotely pull backups. - Started rsync daemon on source computer - /etc/rsyncd.conf on source: use chroot = false # use chdir = false [hometim] path = /home/time - I'm using the rsync connection method with password file, not ssh - rsync command generated by lucky...

Re: smbd high cpu [solved]

It fixed itself. Ran at high cpu for about a day. Now it's fine. smbd does not show up in top.

smbd high cpu [solved]

I'm seeing high CPU usage by smbd in top. It's not causing a problem that I can see; I just don't think it's right. I noticed residual activity in System Monitor where I am used to seeing nothing. For some reason, System Monitor does not list smbd as a process. Linux Mint 19.1 Mate kernel 4.15.0-43 ...

Re: gksudo luckybackup permission denied

Very helpful. Thanks. I don't routinely store bookmarks on the desktop. I had exported them assuming the backups would pick them and I would be covered for an OS upgrade. If I take ownership of /mnt, can I then run backups with the same power as sudo? Are you sure that taking ownership of /mnt from ...

Re: gksudo luckybackup permission denied

It may come to that, at least for /home. Most user data is elsewhere. But I don't want to use that for pictures, videos, docs.

I get that application files may be in use on /home. But if the app is closed I would think sudo could access it.

gksudo luckybackup permission denied [SOLVED]

I ran luckybackup as super user but still have files that are not backed up, I presume because of permission issues. I thought sudo could do anything. Ideally I would want automatic backups but if I have to give sudo a password I could live with it. But even that didn't work. Thunderbird files are m...

Clean up network browser? [SOLVED]

When my backup server browses the network using caja, it sees two of everything, plus another set in Windows Network. I have three computers. Caja sees: XPS13 and XPS13 SMB (Mint 17.3) LATE5430 and LATE5430 SMB (18.3) JENXPS (File Sharing) and JENXPS (File Sharing) Windows Network>Workgroup> XPS13 L...

Reinstalled the OS, upgrading to 19.1. No problems doing that.

Re: Stop trying to mount already!

Thanks. Good to know. Perhaps by accident, I got control of the drive by launching gparted after the drive was inserted and spewing error popup. Deleted the partition; couldn't reformat; tried Windows; did a slow format. The things still squawks when insert. Must be hardware failure. Seeking warrant...

Stop trying to mount already! [solved-ish]

A USB drive apparently went bad. It keeps trying to mount, over and over, popping up "cannot read superblock" in new popups. I am happy to reformat the whole thing if I could get it to stop trying to mount. I can only stop it by pulling the drive. Is there a way to get the system to stop trying to m...

Re: Black screen, no boot options after update

Boot mode=UEFI; SecureBoot=Off
1) ubuntu
2) Windows Boot Manager

Is that what you mean? (see attached)

I can get to Windows this way but ubuntu goes to black screen.

Re: Black screen, no boot options after update

When I try to boot, I get black screen after Dell logo. Nothing ever happens. I've tried waiting, typing return, Esc, moving the cursor. Nothing. It just sits there at black screen. Thanks to your suggestion, I can get it to boot by repeatedly tapping Esc at the Dell logo. BUT it's tricky. Tapping o...
