Re: Can anyone help me install the Fvwm95 Window Manger?

This is a late post, but I just installed fvwm95 on Linux Mint 16. It actually works pretty well! A cool option for all those nostalgic people like me :D . There's no binary package, so you have to compile from source (just download the most recent from sourceforge.net). I really didn't expect it to...

Re: Cinnamon 2.0.14 Installed on Maya

Cinnamon 2.0.14 is available in the backports repository. No need to use nightly or cinnamon repositories to get it. I personally recommend sticking to just the backports, main, and upstream repositories, unless you're testing software. Most of the stuff will get backported. If you're installing cin...

Re: Cinnamon 2.0.14 Installed on Maya

Open Synaptic Package Manager and remove the gnome stuff you don't want. but watch out for the dependencies. There is some stuff that, if removed, will cause important stuff like Cinnamon to uninstall with it. Keep in mind that Cinnamon is actually a fork of GNOME, and still relies on GNOME dependen...

Re: The "System Settings" needs to improve!

I just installed a slew of updates, and now I have Cinnamon 2.0.14. However, there are still two "System Settings". According to this topic http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=136477 one of them is the gnome-control-center which I can't remove due to dependencies. The new cinnamon-cont...

Re: The "System Settings" needs to improve!

Just ran into another problem. I added the backports repository in order to replace Nautilus with Nemo, and a bunch of updates became available. I installed all of them, and now I have two control panels. Both are called "System Settings". Why are there two instead of just one big one? Here are some...

Re: USB mouse keeps going to sleep

Yes, the mouse works fine when the AC is plugged in, but I want to change it so that the mouse's autosuspend on battery takes longer. I know I can just do sudo echo 30 > /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/autosuspend but this is not persistent. I want it so that, when on battery and any USB mouse is pl...

USB mouse keeps going to sleep

I'm using Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon edition on a HP Pavilion g7-1338dx. I decided today to start using a mouse with my laptop, but I have this annoying issue where after about 3 seconds of inactivity, the mouse stops responding. I have to click a mouse button, and it comes back after one second. I type...

Re: Disable volume increase/decrease sound effect

I somehow lost this sound effect when reinstalling pulseaudio. I really like it. It lets me know how loud my volume is. Anyone know how to get it back?

Re: The "System Settings" needs to improve!

Well, here are a few things that have issues: The "Appearance" section allows you to change the desktop wallpaper, and that's it! You can't change the theme, colors, fonts, or anything else from this. To do these things, you must go to "Cinnamon Settings" from the start menu. "Cinnamon Settings" sho...

The "System Settings" needs to improve!

The first Linux distro I've tried out was Linux Mint 14 KDE. I was very impressed with how powerful it was and all of the features it had. A few months ago, I switched to Cinnamon in order to cut some of the cruft. I really love this DE. It is very intuitive and easy to use, but one thing that bothe...

Re: Software Manager Progress Bar Freeze

Same issue still persists on Mint 13 Cinnamon. How is this a LTS release if they fail to fix bugs like this and focus on the new versions instead? I guess you can do some repository finagling to get the Mint 14 Software Manager.

I can confirm that this is still an issue in 2013 on Linux Mint 15. Has nobody bothered to fix this?

Re: How to install a software with tar.gz extention?

It is much easier and more reliable to install software from your distribution's repositories. The software managers handle all of the dependencies and such automatically. However, software not available from repositories must be installed from packages such as tar, rpm, deb, or yum. Tar is a compre...

Re: 4th most widely used operating system in the world?

Linux seems to be pretty unknown to the general U.S. population. Few people I talk to even know what Linux is! At my school, I'd estimate that about 70% of the students use Mac OS X, about 20% use Windows 8.x and the remaining 10% use Windows 7 on their laptops. The school's computers consist mainly...

Re: 4th most widely used operating system in the world?

Also, we must not forget Chrome OS. I'm pretty sure there are more people out there with Chromebooks than there are with Linux Mint. Hmmm... This would actually make Mint the 4th most popular Linux distro behind Android, Chrome OS, and Ubuntu.

Re: Mint won't boot, black screen login: ?

This could be a number of different things. When does the black screen occurr? Right when you boot up? After the GRUB screen? After the Mint Logo? If you can see the GRUB screen, move the cursor/highlight to Linux Mint and press add chipset.modeset=0 to the end of the line that appears, replacing ch...

Re: 4th most widely used operating system in the world?

First of all, I'm a college student, so I don't have too much time on my hands. I just saw that piece information when installing Linux Mint and questioned it. Alright, I now see how they say that Mint is the fourth most widely used operating system, but in my view, if you group all Windows operatin...

4th most widely used operating system in the world?

During the installation of Linux Mint, it says that Linux Mint is the 4th most widely used operating system in the world. I know for a fact that this is not true. Windows 7, 8, XP, Vista, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and Ubuntu all surpass Linux Mint in terms of usage share. Even if we just count desktop...

Annoying flaw in the forum's search feature

I really hate trying to search the Linux Mint forums for help on a topic and being confronted with this message: "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: <words here> You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least...

Re: Remove Windows 7

If LM and Win7 are on different partitions, you can just open up the Gparted partition manager and delete the Windows partition and then expand your Linux partition. During the installation process (assuming you used a live CD/DVD/USB), there was an option to wipe the whole disk, which you could've ...
