Re: Noisy fan on HP 17" dv8000 series laptop...

As part of my job I had to maintain Compaq and HP laptops both in the UK and US. The one thing I learned is that the AMD/ATI chip choice is not ideal for cool running. We had no end of trouble with overheating on these machines, fans running flat out all the time. Winows or Linux makes no difference...

Reproduceable fix for two update managers Mint 11 LXDE

Hi The Zeitgeist DataHub in Preferences>Desktop Session Settings seems to be the culprit here. If you disable it and reboot the double Mint Update goes away. enable it and it come back. BUT the way it comes back is interesting - it showed as the right half of the default Menu 'gear' icon. Then goes ...

XFCE 201108 repositories query

Hi Loving the RC of XFCE 201108 - just a query about the repos. I recall a while ago there was mention of filtering all the updates coming from Debian testing through the Mint repos first. It looks to me as though that is what is happening here with the XFCE repos but just wondering if anyone can co...

XFCE Mint 7 - font problem

Hi With all debian and ubuntu distros - including all previous Mints my first action is to install the msttcorefonts (if not already there) I then set Verdana 8 as standard font, disable antialias and set hinting to full and ensure dpi is set to 96. This gives a nice clean text, a bit 'old school wi...

Re: fonts in openoffice

This can be a pain, but oddly it is only in debian based distros that it is easy to resolve. 1. Install msttcorefonts 2. Set verdana as default font 3. Make sure it is set in .gtkrc-2.0 gtk-default-font="Verdana 8" - 8 or 9 is ok. 4. sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config (if using an LCD set to al...

Re: Wine - installation support file could not be installed

Thanks again Husse - Plenty of room on all working partitions. Addresses/paths carefully set. Can I expect Wine to run FTM2006? Can I also expect it to run the driver for my webcam? FTM is not happy in Wine - its database engine just doesn't play. I exported my old FTM stuff to GED and then dropped...

Hi Matt Used to get this a lot in the old days - don't know if it's still available, but try running sudo xvidtune in a terminal. If it works, click Auto, then adjust using the buttons. If it gets where you want it, click Show and paste the modeline entry into your Xorg.conf However - you may want t...

Personally I get offended by people that take offence so easily to anything and everything. To me they are all just spineless whingers that cannot cope with the real world and reality and therefore they serve no purpose in life, they are a liability and they weaken the gene pool. Furthermore their ...

Tasteless One Liners in terminal - Bianca

Little gems like "You will be held hostage by a radical group" popping up when you start terminal :x

This kind of juvenile - and tasteless - stuff belongs in the dark ages!

Hi RealPlayer 10 is part of the default install for Barbara/LinuxMint - so I'm not 100% sure what you mean. For example, if you goto http://www.bbc.co.uk/news and then go down to Video audo news, you should be able to watch any of the items in the embedded RealPlayer. If you have previously chosen a...

Whilst slightly off topic, this reminded me that it is possible to browse the membership list and pick off email addresses without having registered.

Could I suggest that is not allowed to non registered members, and also that the default setting is changed to not display email addys??

I would look at the sources.list file but I have not installed it yet. I do not want to do that until I know the source is available. Live CD does not need to be installed, but................ OK, so, I'm curious to know - IF you had all that source code, what would you do with it?

Have a look at the sources.list file - I think you'll find it will help you in obtaining the code you require.
