Thanks for the suggestion! That's what I've been using as an alternative file manager.

But Thunar doesn't handle the desktop, or desktop icons. Those appear to be handled by caja, even when I'm using Thunar as the file manager.

Well it's been 2 weeks with no freezies.

Hooray for Thunar! Seems like this should really be the distro default file manager, so caja can focus its less capable little brain on just running the desktop.

Can you install Thunar and see if it has the same issues? apt install thunar Thunar also supports multiple windows and tabs. Use it like you normally use Caja, see if the issue happens. The same thing is happening for me in Mint 20.3 MATE

Press F2 while a file is selected: file rename
Press F2 while no file is selected: crash caja, causing ALL open caja windows to disappear, across all desktops
