When I try to update Mint 19, the attached bunch of statements are shown.
There was no way to copy and paste them.

Re: Login as root for KDE Sarah Mint 18 [SOLVED]
Thanks, Veronica! I did get it right in the actual file. I think the reason it failed may have been the need to edit /etc/pam.d/sddm. I found another approach that worked for me at http://blog.libero.it/Laoblog2/13228972.htmlveronicathecow wrote:This may help

[SOLVED] Firefox Process Prevents Firefox Restart
After installing Mint KDE Sarah, I started Firefox and ran it for a bit. I exited it and when I tried to restart it, I got the error that it was already running. Rebooting did not solve the problem. I tried to use htop to find the offending process(es), but I couldn't find any for firefox. How can I...

Re: Login as root for KDE Sarah Mint 18 [SOLVED]
Realizing the risks, I always run as root in my Linux systems. I just installed KDE Sarah and tried to use Veronica's technique. For some reason, my install did not include an /etc/sddb.conf, so I created one with just the parts she quoted. I had created a root password. As a result of the new sddb....

Re: New Grub Won't Boot Old Distro
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I've decided to forget about old Fedora. I'm going to start with a Debian Netinstall for all the terminal stuff in UNIX/Linux. When it's time to introduce X, I'll have them install Mint for a KDE system and something else for a Gnome, probably Ubuntu because of ...

Re: New Grub Won't Boot Old Distro
Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I'm goiing to try some of those things. Later: The "linux" to "kernel" change didn't work. I got the error that "kernel" can't be found. Even later: I couldn't find the grub customiser, but I installed a KDE grub customiser. It seemed t...

New Grub Won't Boot Old Distro
I've been using Linux for years, but I'll be teaching a college course in it for the first time. I'm subbing for the regular prof, so I don't have any choice about the textbook, Guide to UNIX Using Linux (I know, I know). The book comes with a DVD the students are supposed to install, and the versio...

Moved here by moderator Please start by running the following command, and sharing the output here from a computer that can connect: inxi -SNxc 0 Thanks, Vincent. It was my wife's computer, and she was eager to get back online. I confess I installed Kubuntu over Mint. (head hanging in shame) *ubunt...

Did Update and Now No Network!
Before I let the update manager do its thing, everything was working fine. After the update (a lot of files... it had been a long time), neither ethernet nor wireless will connect. How do I fix this?

Thanks! It's been so long since I reported this problem that I've forgotten the solution I discovered.Mister.T wrote:Try right click on menu/edit menu/check box next to wine. It should then appear in the menu.

Re: Wine Is Working But It's Not In The Menu
Oh, boy, I think I'm dead. It looks like Kyodai is not being installed after all. It's not in /home/gail/.wine/drive_c/Program Files. It was working great in Xubuntu Natty, but Natty got too unstable, so I installed LMDE. If I can't get Kyodai working reliably, it's back to Windows for my wife! Lane

Wine Is Working But It's Not In The Menu
On my wife's laptop I just installed Wine from Synaptic in LMDE. I installed Kyodai, without which I would have never gotten my wife away from Windows. I chose the "go ahead and run it" option while installing Kyodai, and it runs fine. But nothing shows up in the XFCE menu to enable Kyodai...

[SOLVED] Reboot Doesn't Go Back to Grub Menu
I don't know if this is a Mint problem, an XFCE problem, or a Debian problem. When I click Logout in my LMDE installation and select Restart , X quits and then the system boots back into X without going back to the BIOS and Grub menu. That prevents me from selecting another of the distros I have on ...

Re: Where Are the Basic Wireless Install Instructions?
Well, I've reinstalled LMDE. I installed with Synaptic the file that has Broadcom 4312 stuff in it. But it may be just for building drivers from scratch. Anyway, it didn't give me wireless, unlike the very convenient facility provided by Ubuntu. I guess all that overhead's good for something. I went...

Re: Where Are the Basic Wireless Install Instructions?
It turned out that installing Mint 11 on my wife's laptop was a mistake. The compositing or something went haywire after an update with window decorations disappearing and it becoming impossible to move any window to a new location without it maximizing instead. I have no patience with the 90,000 co...

Re: Where Are the Basic Wireless Install Instructions?
Thanks for the link. It's hard to believe it's so easy in Mint 11 and so hard in Mint LMDE (that link goes to a very long involved procedure). But maybe the Gramps50 script mentioned will do the trick.

Re: Where Are the Basic Wireless Install Instructions?
I went ahead and installed Linux Mint 11 in place of the LMDE version. I spotted the Hardware Drivers thing, and it was waiting to install the Broadcom drivers for me. So all is well now, although I'm a bit disappointed to have loaded the Gnome overhead instead of XFCE... but I'm not up for another ...

Re: Where Are the Basic Wireless Install Instructions?
Thanks for the response, Wayne. Maybe I'm asking the wrong question. I get the impression that if the right firmware (when did the name get changed from "drivers"?) is installed, wireless will work without any configuration by the user. But I stumbled across the network config stuff buried...
