How I got my AMD RX 460 to work in linux

I have successfully got a Radeon RX460 to work with Mint 18. I was tired of Nvidia and their approach to linux support and decided to vote with my wallet. Making it work was a rather involved process. I heard that AMD had put the drivers into the linux kernel somewhere from 4.7 onwards. I saw in Min...

Re: USB flash drive permissions seem to be mashed

You were right about the bunch of keys. Once I had unmounted the drive they vanished from GParted and all looked fine. It let me format the drive But there was an error GParted 0.3.8 Libparted 1.8.9 Format /dev/sdb1 as fat32 00:00:03 ( ERROR ) calibrate /dev/sdb1 00:00:00 ( SUCCESS ) path: /dev/sdb1...

Re: USB flash drive permissions seem to be mashed

Oh one other thing when I first plugged the drive in to the Fedora 11 (with ext4) machine nothing happened. So I didn't do anything to the computer (there was nothing to unmount) I just pulled the flash drive out and put it back in the socket thinking that I hadn't properly inserted it. After that i...

USB flash drive permissions seem to be mashed

An enigma wrapped in a conundrum surrounded by a mystery for you to consider. I have a 4Gb PNY flash drive. Never given me any problems. I copied some video files from Mint 6 to another computer running Fedora 11 The drive was set up with FAT32 Now I can't delete any (or all of the files). When I tr...

Re: Intel G41 driver issue

I'm making this posting from inside the openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2 64 bit KDE 4 live CD. Just to say with the experimental 2.6.30 rc 6 kernel the G41 driver issue seems to have solved itself. Compiz is whizzing and popping away a treat. None of the media files seem to work. Codec issue it would seem....

Re: Intel G41 driver issue

Did some more digging and it appears there is a general problem with driver support in Linux for the G41. First off https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/66818 For another G41 motherboard owner with problems Most interesting is the news that Zhenyu Wang's G41 patch has been added to kernel ...

Re: Intel G41 driver issue

From memory and also wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X4500 it was launched in the 4th quarter of 2008 I remember at the time of launch of the G45 (same family) phoronix were saying that Intel were really good with the drivers in fact you could get the drivers before you could ge...

Intel G41 driver issue

A strange story to tell. Today I installed a new motherboard, CPU and memory. Intel E8400 Gigabyte G41M-ES2L 2x2GB matched Corsair DDR2 The reason for the upgrade as I've said in previous postings is the ATI driver issue in my old setup which anyone who has tried using Linux on a machine with ATI gr...

Re: RAM upgrade has made desktop unstable in Mint 64

Switched back to my old 2x512Mb memory and everything is back to normal. The only thing I can think of is that the fact that the two 1GB modules weren't matching might have led to an incompatibility. You heard it hear first folks don't mix and match different makes of memory even if the technical sp...

Re: RAM upgrade has made desktop unstable in Mint 64

Thanks for the reply. Yes the modules are okay. No one likes to admit that there gear might be faulty but I swapped these modules out of a an old Sempron box that I'd been using happily with Mint for months. Straight swap of 2x512MB PC3200 400Mhz modules for 2x1GB PC3200 400Mhz modules. Oh and the m...

RAM upgrade has made desktop unstable in Mint 64

A curious problem with Mint 64. When I first put in the Live CD I had corrupted graphics but being a long standing Linuxer (is that a word?) I am well aware of the long standing issues with ATI hardware and drivers. I persevered and after installing everything I loaded the special ATI restricted dri...

Faster boot times

Most computer users, myself included, stick with what works for ages. Case in point I used Bianca well passed its sell by date. How do you get all your lazy users to upgrade? We're not Microsoft so we can't use any sticks. So we offer a carrot. Faster boot times Have a read of the following article....

I agree. Having Mint make money off Google is fine. But why do we get such an impaired Google search experience?
I just don't understand the logic?

Niggle with Mint Update

Teeny tiny niggle. Why does Mint Update default to checking for updates every 5 minutes. I know technology changes fast but that is a bit silly. I have to manually change it to once a day. I suggest that you tweak Mint Update to only check for updates once a day. Or better yet have it remember the l...

Re: How long before a driver goes into the repositories?

Already used EnvyNG. Also think there is a conflict between EnvyNG and the restricted hardware drivers program. When I first installed Elyssa I used EnvyNG (just as we are all told to) but then I noticed the jerky scrolling in FF and no video playback and a little warning came up saying restricted p...
