Re: skype audio settings

Had a similiar problem: Under Helena the official skype app (from skype.com) was not able to utilize my logitech webcam. After some research I ended up with dpkg skype_2.1.0.47-0medibuntu... (actually you need 2 packages, skype and skype-common). Then go to sound preferences and check wether you sel...

Re: Onboard nVidia GeForce 8100 flickering

I can confirm that the GPU is the problem. As written before the issue affects Windows XP, too. The 8100 does not support HDMI sound unter Win XP, either.

An alternative GPU (nvidia 250 gts) did not show the flickering or any other bugs in the same testing environment.

Havent found a fix yet ;-(

Software for local Backups (local dropbox)?

I was just wondering whether there is a software that lets you backup/sync files locally like the infamous dropbox service? I am thinking of the following setup: 1 internal hard drive and 1 external one (that will be switched every week with a second one). A configurable service shopuld run in the b...

Re: Poll: How do you use Linux Mint?

Using Mint 7 64bit as my every day OS for work and multi media. Just like the ease of use, the design & eye candy and the mint tools. Tried serveral Linux distris and sticked to Debian/Mint. What I like about the Gnome desktop in general is the uncluttered "dumbed down" interface that doesnt get int...

Re: Onboard nVidia GeForce 8100 flickering

Just a note regarding the GeForce 8100...there is still a flickering issue when you move the mouse cursor up to the very top => screen flickers...the behaviour is the same in Windows XP  (drivers affected 173, 184 and 19x)

HOW TO fix issues with NVIDIA GeForce 8100

The GeForce 8100 onboard graphic card can give you lots of headache...thus I want to share my experience and ease things up a little bit :) Here is how to get your card working in Linux Mint (7 - 64bit): Get the 190.42 driver from http://www.nvidia.com go to console (CTRL+ALT+F1) kill X ("sudo /etc/...

Re: Onboard nVidia GeForce 8100 flickering

Has someone come up with a solution yet? I am experiencing the same issues. The screen flickers quite often and video playback performance in full screen mode (e.g. youtube, vlc videos) is really bad :( I already tried the proprietary drivers from nvida (170, 180, 190 from website and the beta 195)....

isn't it possible to port the security fixes from the server edition to the regular lts??

Re: Emphasizing on LTS

Let's summarize the suggestions & implications: Change the name of "Linux Mint LTS" to "Linux Mint" Get a new name for the non-lts releases of Linux Mint (that suits the tech-savvy faction) Put the re-labled LTS version in the focus of communication (screencasts, website, design & text etc.) Let use...

First of all DimDim looks really great. I took a look at it some time ago and it seems to have made good progress concerning its usability.

Concerning the LM Screencasts...I will be glad to share some ideas, insights and opinions ;-)

Re: Emphasizing on LTS

@ fred I have read your post and your links and if even a "linux evangelist" thinks that emphasizing on LTS for the non-technical users is a good idea that could help Linux Mint on the whole...superb ;-) Too much fluff and not enough substance. Hope I am not being offensive, but that is my opinion. ...

Re: Different Release Cycle

@ emorrp1 Right, I am basically suggesting to strongly emphasize the LTSs in the future. At first it might sound awkward but by re-labeling your product you do much more then just exchanging names. You shift expectations, position it in another way and therefore change the users perception (!) of it...

Re: Different Release Cycle

@ emorrp1 Ok I think I understand your point. But let's digg a little deeper into that. I don't want to suggest a fundamental change in "producing" (developing/coding etc.) the product (= Linux Mint). I am suggesting to merely change the way to "sell" it and deliver it to average Joe (everybody else...

Emphasizing on LTS

I know that Linux Mint is following it's "mother" distro Ubuntu and therefore has a similar 6 month release cycle (although delayed). As far as I understand it, Linux Mint is a user friendly, fresh looking distro that average Joe can install, use and experience a media rich desktop. So think about i...
