SOLVED cannot save preferences with nemo as root

I do not like icon view. When I open nemo as root, then change preferences to list or compact view, it switches back to the greatly unwanted icon view when I change folders . How to prevent this? I don't mind changing it once per session, but it's a nuisance to change it for every folder. Any settin...

gmail-friendly email client

I've recently received some warnings from google about 'less secure apps or devices' accessing my gmail account. It lists Thunderbird as a less secure device. But I can't figure out what a 'more secure device or app' would be, unless it is to sign in to gmail via the browser and 2-step authenticatio...

Re: skypeforlinux not found in repo for mint 18.2

Just download the .deb from https://www.skype.com and install it. Sound of palm slapping forehead!  The link on that page says "Download skype for linux rpm" But I missed noticing the down-arrow that pulls down the other options, and I didn't click the link which leads to a page ...

Re: Canon E410 PIXMA scanner not found

What's an MFP?

Their website offers "linux" drivers as an .rpm archive.

Know any way to convert or install .rpm drivers in Linuxmint?

Thanks

Canon E410 PIXMA scanner not found

I recently installed a Canon E410 Pixma scanner/printer/copier. I ran the cups printer setup; now printing and photocopying work fine. But sane reports "scanner not found." Can find no .deb driver for this printer, though. lsusb reports: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04a9:181e Canon, Inc. I edited /lib/ude...

modem-manager-gui address book

LM 18.3. I often need to send an sms vial modem-manager-gui, which uses gnome-address-book. Which I can't find in the menu, but I do see something in synaptic. I cannot understand how to install gnome-address-book, even though the evolution backend databases seem to be installed. Where is evolution ...

SOLVED downgrade mint from 18.3 to 18.2

is there any way to downgrade an installation of 18.3 to 18.2?

Or is a new install of 18.2 (or clone from another system) the only way? --or the fastest/safest way?

Thanks

lm18.3 cannot disable touchpad when mouse is plugged in

In LM18.3 I have tried the following to turn of the touchpad when I have a mouse plugged in. selected System Settings > Mouse & Touchpad > Touchpad > [but there's no option to disable touchpad]. There is an option to ignore the touchpad when a mouse is connected, but this setting has no effect. inst...

Re: SOLVED switch off power instead of "shutdown" command

Thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions. I usually shut down gracefully, but I have to wait and wait and wait until the computer turns off before I can turn off the UPS. Otherwise, the speakers, monitor and will still be drawing power and running down the UPS batteries. About once a month w...

first, I close all open files/applications before switching off.
What's the question?
Is there still a danger of scrambled files if everything is closed and I'm back to the desktop?

SOLVED switch off power instead of "shutdown" command

See related question: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=277517 Occasionally I'm in a hurry and don't want to wait for the system to shutdown, as in clicking shutdown from the menu, or issuing 'sudo shutdown now" from the command line. Thanks for the tip. I removed V2.00 and re-installed Dejavu and Liberation via Synaptic.

Problem did not return.

Re: strange problem with fonts in firefox & chrome

Clear your browser cache, try regenerating your font cache: fc-cache -r fc-cache -fv restart the browser and if it's still broken then it's time to re-install some fonts I guess. I deleted ms-core-fonts and all of my special fonts. I also made liberation serif and liberation sans the default fonts ...

Re: strange problem with fonts in firefox & chrome

I tried LM18.2 xfce. Same result. When I copy and paste the Wikipedia sub-headline text "Øramaóa" to xed, it comes out as "Śramaṇa" as expected. I have not added or deleted any fonts. I did remove LM17 from my machines, so I can't test further. I'm experienced with both Unicode and UTF-8. I have Aut...

Re: strange problem with fonts in firefox & chrome

Update: I tried it on my laptop, also running LM18.3-64; same result with FF and Chrome. I then started Win7 inside VirtualBox. Same result with the IE that comes with Win7.
