Re: Easymp3gain not working after new distro install

Thanks, looks promising.

However I can't really understand how to apply the code. An example would be helpful.

Easymp3gain not working after new distro install

I've installed this application many times before, but for some reason it's now failing on me. 4.8.0-42 / Serena / Cinnamon It opens as usual but when I try to do anything, I get a message on the bottom bar that says 'Error. Cannot start mp3gain. Installed?' It doesn't process any files in this stat...

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

It was Option 1 that worked.

Yes, that makes a bit more sense, thanks for the explanation.

I'm somewhat less afraid of using CLI as a result of all this, but I'd be lost without the help of folk on here. So cheers!

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

Well, you'll never guess what, it worked! The buttons don't work any more but backlight does. So I guess that'll do. Amazing that it took so long to solve, and equally amazing that you were prepared to help me. So a thousand thank you's. Finally, if you're able to give me some kind of understanding ...

Guess what? sudo touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf didn't do anything either!

... and gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub didn't do anything. I think I'll try the next option then!

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

It doesn't open a file - just displays this in Terminal: GNU nano 2.5.3 File: /etc/default/grub # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update # /boot/grub/grub.cfg. # For full documentation of the options in this file, see: # info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration' GRUB_DEFAULT=0 ...

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

Option 1: (in the terminal)
sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi="
Then, save the file.
Save what file?

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

Didn't notice - this was the first time I tried pressing the button. I am away from home so I don't have the USB drive I used for installation with me. However the 4.8 was upgraded after the problem first appeared as per the first suggestion I got on here. I'm reaching the end of my tether with this...

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

So acpi_backlight=vendor didn't change anything.

I should have said, the phrase on the end of the 'quiet splash' line is $ut_handoff

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

Yes, screen stopped flashing, by the way. And thanks for the backlight hint - it worked. Am I right in saying that I need to add the "acpi_backlight=vendor" to the end of the same line I had to edit to get into software rendering mode? And if so does it matter if there's already something else on th...

While we're at it, if anyone can advise me on how to turn off the backlighting of my keyboard, that's be very useful too.

Re: Help! Brightness stuck on minimum, plus button ineffective

I'm aware that BIOS is what happens when you turn the computer on, but I wouldn't know what you're referring to with that question.
