Re: Update Errors and Low Boot Disk Error Messages

Is it possible that you have a lot of kernels installed? I suggest opening the Update Manager, going to View => the Linux Kernel, and scrolling through the lists. There, you can see which kernel is currently loaded; remove all installed kernels except the active one + one previous kernel that you k...

Re: Sharing usb drive plugged in linux with windows machine

Thanks for the post danneauxs, and especially thanks to altair4 - yes, perfect advice even today. I pulled my hair out most of the day today pouring over samba how-to's, forum posts, and more. If I could only have those hours back, when this solution solved my problem in seconds. I have a small home...

Re: Startup Applications will not save changes 18.1

Thank you cosmo and austin.texas, your replies are very appreciated. My problem is solved, and I'm off and using Mint for the awesome rock solid OS it is. Now if I could only get my wife to be willing to try.... :D

Re: Startup Applications will not save changes 18.1

First, as to using Nemo in root, all I'm doing in right clicking on the folder .config in the home directory, and selecting "open as root". From there, I right click on .config, go to properties, then to permissions. I opted to copy the permissions from a different folder as I said before,...

Re: Startup Applications will not save changes 18.1

Thank you for the help Cosmo! I don't know why, but on both computers with this issue, the command you gave did not change the situation, even after not only logging off but also rebooting. To the best of my knowledge I did it right - it gave no output as you said it wouldn't. I solved (or hope I di...

Startup Applications will not save changes 18.1

Hi, I'm hoping I'm just being a permanent newbie (which I really am) - but I recently did a fresh install of 18.1 Serena Cinnamon. As I'm going about setting things up, I've now tried three separate times to add items to the startup applications - to no avail. It just refuses to remember my changes ...

JeremyB, thank you!!! That did the trick, first try. I'll see if I can set up the headphones one more time, and then try another set of headphones I have.

Cannot Remove Bluetooth Device

Hi, I paired an Air-Fi Venture stereo headset to LinuxMint 18 Cinnamon, newly installed on a Lenovo Thinkpad T410. It paired and worked, until the laptop went into suspend. I removed it, and did a re-pair, and then no sound (even though Mint listed it fine in audio output, etc). I removed again, and...

Re: Customizing User Accounts, Limiting Access to Programs,

Cosmo, thanks. Out of curiosity, how do I check existing permissions for folders? I did a review of chmod at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chmod , and understand better now (although I confess I'm a bit confused by the differences between write and execute when it comes to permissions?). Anyway, is ...

Re: Customizing User Accounts, Limiting Access to Programs,

Wow, excellent responses, thank you.

So to be clear, the only way for me to limit access from one user to the next to folder or mounted drives, is to encrypt them? Regardless, with the information I have in this thread, I've got what I need to accomplish my goals. Thank you again!

Customizing User Accounts, Limiting Access to Programs, etc.

Hi, I'm posting here because I really don't know where else to post this question. And yes, I've searched here in the forum's and can't seem to find what I need. My question I hope is simple: I want to share one of my Mint desktops with a couple of my children. I don't want them to have the ability ...

Advanced User and Group Controls?

Don't know if this is right place for my question, but since I'm a perpetual newbie, here you go: I want to have some advanced controls over new users - particularly my kids. I want to control what applications they have access to and would rather them not even have access to one of the hard drives ...

Re: Determine cause of lock-ups or freezes

Great suggesstions WharfRat and Mute Ant (and great user names :D). I'll try both. Is there an easy guide out there on logging in via ssh from another computer? I have two other desktops on the home network, but both of them are Windows 7 Machines. I could partion and install Mint however if necessa...

Determine cause of lock-ups or freezes

Hello ~ Ever since I did a fresh new install of Mint 17 Cinnamon 64bit, I've been having random machine freezes that force me to push the reset button or power off the machine. Most of the time, it's over-night and I can't get the screen to come back on, but sometimes it happens while I'm using it. ...

Re: Bluetooth Issues - 14.04 Based releases

Thanks. I also posted this same issue over at Ubuntu's official forums... absolute silence. I've since done all kinds of work trying to get around this, and have given up on the whole blueman possibility. I'm sure its an issue underneath with the 14.04 version of the Ubuntu base. Ultimatly, I tried ...

Bluetooth Issues - 14.04 Based releases

I have now installed Mint 17 Mate edition RC, lubuntu 14.04, and xubuntu 14.04 on two separate computers, with two separate usb bluetooth adapters. On all three installed, I cannot get "blueman" to navigate and connect an audio sink to my bluetooth stereo headset. All three behave exactly ...

Re: Linux Mint (or Ubuntu generally) Desktop Speed

My experience with Linux Mint 16 KDE was that it was not any slower than Cinnamon (on my older hardware). I just prefer Cinnamon to KDE (even though KDE is feature rich - surprisingly so). In my limited experience, Ubuntu with Unity is the slowest of everything I've "tested", now with XFCE...

Re: Linux Mint (or Ubuntu generally) Desktop Speed

I'm glad to see some of the responses here. I have spent some more time this weekend trying some different approaches. For example, being the perpetual newbie and tinkerer I am, I did a fresh install of xubuntu 14.04 on the HTPC I referenced in this post, and wow, what a difference. I never should h...
