Re: home data in dual boot

On my backup computer I have Debian 10 and Windows 7. What I did was make a directory under /mnt named C:, and edited my /ect/fstab to mount the Windows partition to /mnt/C:. If I wanted to go back and do it right, I would make a symlink in my /home directory that points to Documents on the Windows...

home data in dual boot

OK, got new laptop with Windows 10, installed Linux Mint 20.1 and set up dual boot. (I'm keeping Windows, mostly for games.) QUESTION: Windows gives you a Documents folder, Linux gives you \home. How do I access documents, photos, documents, music in both OSes. Do I (a) put all my personal data on \...

Re: startup scripts for speed

Am I on the right track? That's not a good track, no. When you fire off commands like that, then each command has to finish and return control back to the script before the next line is handled. You could "background" each command but really this isn't a great approach. Open the main menu...

Re: startup scripts for speed

Open terminal and type systemd-analyze blame This will show you precisely where the boot process is stalling. As always, hardware type and age will play into boot/login times as well. OK, I got 23.835s NetworkManager-wait-online.service 18.918s man-db.service 10.185s networkd-dispatcher.service 8.2...

Re: Code of Conduct for Linux Mint?

When searching for the Code of Conduct for Linux Mint, all I've found is this thread referring to another, locked discussion about the Code of Conduct of the Linux Kernel. Does Linux Mint have any Code of Conduct? Not that I'm aware of. However, with notable and honorable exceptions such a Moem and...

startup scripts for speed

I'm using Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon. My boot-up and login have always felt slow. I know too little of the bootup to mess with it, but it has occurred to me that I would speed up the GUI login by replacing the startup desktop apps with a script I could click on once the GUI is up. So far, I'm thinking...

Re: Dropbox's unfixable error message

I replaced Dropbox with Mega which has a similar desktop client, but it works without python3-gpg. I already load Mega (I use the free space offered by each for different purposes). , but my guess would be a) install python3-gpg from the Software Manager b) see if currently installed Dropbox client...

Dropbox's unfixable error message [SOLVED]

Running Linux Mint 20 I keep getting this message once the GUI finishes installing Screenshot from 2021-01-11 10-57-28.png In effect, it says that I have to install Dropbox, which I have already installed and have set to be a startup application. I have clicked to install using the box's command. No...

Code: Select all

mv: cannot stat './home/user/MEGA/phone/Phone/Pixlr/Screenshot_20200606-101626.jpg': No such file or directory
BS! IT DOES EXIST.
No it doesn't exist. You have an extraneous dot in front of /home: ./home
That dot came from your original example. Sorry, I copied too mechanically.

Re: [Error while booting] ipmi: dmi: Base address is zero, assuming no IPMI interface

Is the correct final conclusion that we can safely ignore it? The system works fine. Boot up just slows down.

Re: move all *.jpg to one folder

Personally, because I don't trust my scripting abilities, I'd do something like ... find /top/level/dir/where/they/are -name "*.jpg" > a.sh and then edit a.sh (with vi, which makes this stuff easy - change all the lines at once) to change the lines from something like ./Movies/Kansas_City...

Re: move all *.jpg to one folder

Thank you all. It is a huge bunch of subdirectories. I did a dedupe and got all the empty ones deleted.

I think I will try the find and replace script that memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=94111 (How do you put the user name of someone?) suggested.

move all *.jpg to one folder [SOLVED]

I copied photos from my Android phone to a Linux Mint computer. Since Android files photos all over the place I ended up with a whole new useless tree of folders. Re: activate freePDF under WINE

Libre office Draw is free and works well. WPS office suite is another option. Scribus is also free with 3 versions; I recommend the newer version. Thank you for the links. I agree that Draw works somewhat. I haven't tried the WPS suite. I thought Scribus was the solution, but it is still designed, ...

Re: activate freePDF under WINE

Hi cecilieaux, With all the PDF applications in Linux, why would you install a MS Windows program and Linux Wine? Using Linux Wine does have some risks. Thank you, I examined the suggestions. There are no FREE PDF editors for Linux. Your list of 8 and 10 best had a Master PDF item that was perfect,...
