Re: activate freePDF under WINE

Libre office Draw is free and works well. WPS office suite is another option. Scribus is also free with 3 versions; I recommend the newer version. Thank you for the links. I agree that Draw works somewhat. I haven't tried the WPS suite. I thought Scribus was the solution, but it is still designed, ...

Re: activate freePDF under WINE

Hi cecilieaux, With all the PDF applications in Linux, why would you install a MS Windows program and Linux Wine? Using Linux Wine does have some risks. Thank you, I examined the suggestions. There are no FREE PDF editors for Linux. Your list of 8 and 10 best had a Master PDF item that was perfect,...

My problem comes when I enter the product key, I get an error "The...

Re: HELP! Cinnamon won't load in Ulyana

SUCCESS!!!! Changed the DE to Cinnamon, not software emulated, at the login Hopefully that change stays permanent at your next reboot. I do not know enough about that feature to know for sure. Worked today. I should add, for anyone having the same problem, that I temporarily changed to software emu...

Re: HELP! Cinnamon won't load in Ulyana

The desktop loads after login, so the boot log would not have the information since that is before login. Your /var/log/syslog file might have a clue as to what is causing cinnamon not to load. The syslog is HUGE I searched for cinnamon and got requested by ':1.12' (uid=1000 pid=1083 comm="cinnamon...

Re: HELP! Cinnamon won't load in Ulyana

If reinstalling LM20 without overwriting /home ends up with the same problem, then I would suspect there would be something in /home that might be causing an issue. I'll have to check my /home to see if there is anything I can think of. I presume the .cinnamon directory from a backup was from a tim...

Re: HELP! Cinnamon won't load in Ulyana

1. What happened in between when it was working fine yesterday and today Cinnamon is not working? Did you put the computer to sleep? Shut it down? 2. When did you install the 5.4.0-45-generic kernel? That just came out within the past week. (And a new version 5.4.0-47 just became available on my co...

HELP! Cinnamon won't load in Ulyana [SOLVED]

Using Linux Mint Ulyana, which was working fine yesterday. The GUI seems dead. I get icons, a black screen. I managed to get cinnamon up using the terminal, but if I close the terminal it's gone: no menu, no panels, nothing. I managed to open a second terminal and get this about my system: $ inxi -F...

Any reason NOT to use Seamonkey?

Most people mention Chrome or Firefox, some Brave or Palemoon, but I've installed Seamonkey and I like its good old Netscape look from the old days. Is there any reason why not to make it the default browser?

Get LM ro mount a partition, how?

I connected an old computer with Linux Mint 19 to my TV. It had 3 drives, an 80GB with Windows 7 (installed originally), and 80GB with LM 19, and a 500GB NTFS for data, presumably accesible by both OSs. Neither Win7 not LM19 seem to recognize the bigger drive, although low level apps do. I don't thi...

For laptop, SSD is far safer than a spinning platter of rust.
My only fear is I hear that SSDs die faster. Has the life of SSDs been extended in recent years? Would it last 10 years?

I'm also wondering whether Linux Mint 20 or Ubuntu 10.04.....
I'm assuming this is a typo - - Ubuntu 10.04 is quite old, and has been out of support for some time?
I meant 20.04 (now corrected, thanks!).

Re: Any apps needed in Linux?

A good *simple* database program to easily maintain and analyze data. sqlitebrowser ? Doesn't recognize dbf files or even LibreOffice files. A decent Linux strategy game that is not hugely complex. Something like Civ II. lincity , lincity-ng ? Lincity is a simulation program attempting, but failing...

Buying a new laptop, suggestions?

I put this here because I couldn't figure out where else to put it. I realize this is a matter of likes and opinions, but I would like to hear some thoughts I have a desktop and a Dell laptop. The latter is not faring all that well and I'm thinking of replacing it (I've had it 6 years). I saw an HP ...
