Preserving /home partition but NOT all settings

In planning to move up to Linux Mint 19, I have forgotten a detail I knew about preserving the /home partition but NOT all settings. I want to try starting with as pristine a system as possible without wiping out years of tweaking favorite apps. My understanding is that there are system setting fold...

Re: "Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module"

There was a much simpler solution. I was missing -common I'd typed: sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module instead of sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module-common In my defense, the -common was missing from the original suggestion. Happens in the best families. With the complete name, it worked! Than...

Here's what happened: ~ $ sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module [sudo] password for user: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... "Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module" [SOLVED]

I watch the various unpacking, triggering and other messages when I use Update Manager and I have noticed that I frequently get something like this Gtk-Message **: Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module" at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl5/5.22/Gtk2.pm line 126 I know that Unity is the Ubuntu deskto...

Solved thanks to Derek Atkins.

Login as new user, create new file - check that budget works properly.
Log back in as old user, delete everything under ~/gconf/apps/gnucash
Reinstall gnucash - budget works!!
I don't seem to have a directory ~/gconf/apps/gnucash

Linux Mint Forever!

I left Ubuntu for Linux Mint because of Unity. I absolutely hated Unity. I'm a computer user and use my phone sparingly for genuine computer purposes. I saw no reason for one common interface. This is where Canonical went off the rails for me. To me GUI and eye candy is important. I have written the...

What are initramfs-tools? [SOLVED]

Yes, this is a real n00b question. Update keeps offering it from time to time and I keep accepting because it is rated safe but I have no idea what it is. I duckduckgoed it and got: This package contains tools to create and boot an initramfs for prepackaged 2.6 Linux kernel. The initramfs is an cpio...

gksu mintinstall is used by Mint 17.x
That explains it. This was my laptop and I did the lazy thing and upgraded without a clean install.

THIS POST WAS A MISTAKE, STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM
Solved it! For some reason, the menu entry had the command

Code: Select all

gksu mintinstall
Got rid of the "gksu" and it worked. How gksu got there, I will never know!

This webpage should answer most of your questions: https://www.maketecheasier.com/snap-pac ... flatpacks/
It should be noted that Mint made a choice at least for now to make flatpacks the default.
Thank you!
