Re: Strange Intruding Webpage

jchelpau and WharfRat,

Thanks very much for your advice. It seems to pop up when I visit websites such as gmail.google.com, reuters.com, bbc.com, and scmp.com. So far it hasn't interfered with my visits to this website. I'll update Firefox and see.

Re: [SOLVED] Where should MFC42u.DLL be placed on Linux Mint 18.3?

phd21, What I mean is that when I attempt to access a website via Firefox specifically, Linux frequently displays a yellow window telling me that another browser is already active and asks me if I'd like to stop it. After a little bit of investigation, I found that the culprit to be Yahoo. I failed ...

Re: [SOLVED] Where should MFC42u.DLL be placed on Linux Mint 18.3?

phd21, Thanks for being so thoughtful. In my Windows days, I found mspaint.exe to be very easy to use and helpful. I'll definitely look into Ksnip when I get a chance. By the way, can you tell me why Yahoo always gets in my way when I try to go online (via Firefox, my default browser)? How can I get...

Re: [SOLVED] Where should MFC42u.DLL be placed on Linux Mint 18.3?

phd21,
You're right. Kolourpaint is much easier to install than MFCu42.DLL or mspaint.exe. I like Kolourpaint as it's quite similar to mspaint.exe and easy to use also. Thanks very much again.

[SOLVED] Where should MFC42u.DLL be placed on Linux Mint 18.3?

2019-05-01

I've just downloaded MFC42u.DLL, which is needed by mspaint.exe. I'd like to know where I should place it on Linux Mint 18.3
in order to execute the following command:

Code: Select all

 wine mspaint.exe

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: What MP3 Players Do Linux Users Use?

Hi, gregoryshock, You can find out if VLC Media Player is already installed by clicking Menu > Applications > Sound & Video. If VLC is listed, then you can open it by clicking it. If not, you can issue the following command to open Synaptic Package Manager to search for it and then mark it for insta...

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 Cold Startup Fails

Did you check the bios battery?
Amii_Leigh,

Thank you very much for your quick and precise diagnosis. Indeed the battery was probably as old as the machine.

Using Gedit with Thunderbird Mail

2019-03-26

To put it very mildly, I'm tired of the fickleness of Thunderbird Mail. It can change the font size and other features of the text I type randomly. There's nothing like a reliable editor like Gedit. Can I use it with Thunderbird Mail? Thank you all in advance.

[SOLVED] Linux Mint 18.3 Cold Startup Fails

2019-03-26 I've just installed Linux Mint 18.3 on an old Jetway NF45 computer. The software seems to work fine once the machine boots up. But if the system is powered up after it has been turned off for a while, it invariably fails to restart. I wonder if this is a BIOS problem or a hardware one. An...

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 password changed mysteriously

2019-03-23 Eureka! I finally found an excellent solution on https://www.techmint.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Fix-Passwd-Authentication-Token-Manipulation-Error.png. I got into the Grub screen with the aid of my faithful PS/2 keyboard by pressing SHIFT at power-up. After that I selected Recovery M...

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 password changed mysteriously

(1) Tonight I tried to fix the problem by way of LM 18.3's Recovery Mode > root. But when the GRUB screen appeared, it did not respond to any USB-keyboard actions. In short, it was totally frozen even though I could see the GRUB options as shown below: GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-86ubuntu3.14+linuxm...

[SOLVED] Linux Mint 18.3 password changed mysteriously

2019-03-22 This is a first Linux Mint password problem I've come across after installing LM on dozens of similar machines. I installed LM 18.3 on a Jetway NF94 this morning and found LM to boot rather slowly most of the time. Suddenly a locked screen appeared demanding a password. When I entered the...

Re: [SOLVED] Linux Mint 18 crashes after editing of lightdm.conf

Just for your information, guest sessions can be enabled or disabled easily in the Login Screen in Linux Mint 19.1. Now that is progress! That is good news and real progress. I wish my hardware were robust enough to take advantage of Linux Mint 19.1. All my machines are 32-bit Jetway NF94s. Many th...
