Re: Changing default DE by editing files....

Is there not an existing config file I can edit to point to XFCE instead of LXDE (like last session info type file) and then just logout and let it auto login?

Changing default DE by editing files....

I'm on Mint 16 XFCE. I have been running LXDE. When I reboot or logout, it automatically logs back in to LXDE. I want to change the default back to XFCE so I can just hit logout in the current LXDE session and it will auto login to the XFCE DE. I do not have access to the settings to change it on th...

Re: No Wifi

I figured out why it wasn't working for me. I had to enable the non-free repositories in synaptic manager. Once that was done it found the b43 firmware installer package and installed perfectly.

Wireless working great now.

Looking to free up memory and disk space

I have a brand new clean install of Mint 16 XFCE edition. Are there any guides or does anyone have any suggestions on how to free up disk space and reduce memory usage? Are there any features that can be removed that would help? Any settings to change to reduce memory usage? This is for an old lapto...

I have the exact same problem and the apt-get says it cannot find the b43 firmware installer.

Is something down?

Re: Force Thunar to mount network shares as CIFs

I will try it again then. That sounds like what I want/need.

I ran into road blocks the first time getting authentication setup properly. I just want it to ask for a password when I try to access the shared location instead of storing the username/pw in a file. I'll have to figure that out.

Re: Force Thunar to mount network shares as CIFs

I looked into AutoFS but the shares are not always available. So I don't want my mint install looking for those shares every time it boots up because they probably won't be there and XFCE seems to really hang when it has mounted a share that isn't online.

Force Thunar to mount network shares as CIFs

Is there a way to change how Thunar mounts windows networked shares using CIFs? The default mounting causes slow LAN speeds on file transfers. Right now I can manually mount using the "mount -t -cifs" command but I want to automate it somehow.

Thanks.

Re: File sharing: Windows vs Mint transfers...

So it is a bug with the current samba. If you mount windows shares from Linux using CIFS, the transfer speeds are close to the same as from windows. I will provide more detailed info as I figure out what all "mount -t cifs" does differently.

Re: File sharing: Windows vs Mint transfers...

I recently had someone tell me it sounded like this was a Windows issue limiting Linux and not the other way around. This sounds possible.

Would anyone have any idea where to look in windows or any tests that would confirm this?

Re: File sharing: Windows vs Mint transfers...

Yeah, I have been scouring the net for weeks trying to find other people with similar issue. I can't be alone here but I am having no luck.

Anyone know of a place I could get direct contact with a samba expert?

Is there anyone else out there with a win7 and LM16 machine that can verify these results?

Re: File sharing: Windows vs Mint transfers...

Just some more testing results:

Running iperf server on MINT, client on Win7: ~65 Mbps
Running iperf server on Win7, client on Mint: ~75 Mbps

Does this help anyone? Thanks.

Re: File sharing: Windows vs Mint transfers...

Just another update. I set up the Mint machine as a WINS server and put it at the top of the hierarchy on the network. No change in speeds from when it was using bcast.

Is there another setup worth trying?

Re: Linux Mint 16 64-bit Live CD Integrity Check Results..

If you used the LIve CD and everything worked well, so the CD is OK. Currently the CD has 1.5 Gb or more and that hinders the verification. That is why I wanted to check the Live CD. My install seemed to go OK but my install acts buggy on a few items and the DVD burn failed the verify after burning...

So am I the only one who has ever seen this issue? Everyone else can transfer files from within Mint at 99+ Mbps on a 100 Mbps network?

Linux Mint 16 64-bit Live CD Integrity Check Results..

When I run Integrity Check on this DVD, it doesn't give me any results. When it is done, it just says push a button to reboot. Does that mean it passed?
