Re: [SOLVED] Mint 18: How do I disable the screensaver?

It is probably either a sliding scale (move slider to number of minutes) or a box with arrows to increase/decrease the number of minutes. I am guessing that, below "1," you'll either see a "0" or the word "Never." Set the time delay to that Nope, from at least 17.3 to 18.2, there is no “never”, onl...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 18: How do I disable the screensaver?

You can disable the screensaver in Mate? How? What is this “never” setting you refer to in respect to the screensaver? I have never seen a setting that allows you to set the screensaver to never activate. The closest I have ever been able to do is to select the Blank screen, uncheck “Activate screen...

Re: Is triple booting possible

I am on SSI and a very small pension. Buying more hard drives, and customized computers at this time is not an option. I also found out I need more storage space for my static files, and backup, and I cannot afford that either. I am just going to do what I can until I can get enough money set aside ...

Re: Is triple booting possible

Nothing in the instructions of VMware or VirtualBox mentioned anything about this. It is a moot point, there are still the other limitations and idiosyncracies involved. I am no longer interested in virtual machines. Also I am even less inclined to make changes in the BIOS than in the registries. Th...

Re: Is triple booting possible

I cannot afford custom hardware, and I cannot afford to buy another external drive at this time. I have used virtual machines. They won’t run as 64 bit and have limitations on both Windows and Linux. I have a desktop and a laptop. I plan to make the desktop my main system and use the laptop as a bac...

If it is an OS that installs GRUB (most Linux distros), Yes.
Would it be possible then to have the third non-grub OS show up on the Grub menu by other means instead of automatically?

Re: Install Time for 18.3 Upgrading from 17.3

The backup battery alarm went off and I had to reset the battery. This of course, interrupted the install procedure for Linux. As it turns out I didn’t lose anything. That means I could have canceled the install at any time and started over properly.

Re: Install Time for 18.3 Upgrading from 17.3

Well, now I know, but it is probably too late for me to stop it now. I will keep it in mind for the future though.
- LM17.1 - LM17.2 - LM17.3
- LM18.1 - LM18.2 - LM18.3
these should take less than an Hour to achieve.
It would have been a little less since I am going from 17.3 to 18.3.

Re: Install Time for 18.3 Upgrading from 17.3

UPDATE: I went to bed soon after the last post. I got up about a half hour ago and just now checked the status. The last line now reads: cracklib: no dictionary update necessary. So, I am guessing when upgrading from inside the current installation the install routine is now programmed to methodical...

Install Time for 18.3 Upgrading from 17.3 [SOLVED]

I decided to use the install icon from the Control Center. I started the install around 10 am yesterday. There is still an Install as superuser box in the middle of the screen detecting file systems. I did this before on an earlier version of Mint, but I don’t remember it taking anywhere near this l...

Re: (power user) Text Editor Needed

Project completed with NotePad++. It has either a slight glitch or I couldn’t figure out how to use it to remove line enders under certain conditions as you can with gEdit or Boxer. NotePad++ uses a completely different way of handling the problem from either. I can figure it out later when I have m...

Re: (power user) Text Editor Needed

Thanks Joe2Shoe, I tried Notpadqq it announced that the Qt in the Mint distro was too old. I tried getting it updated, but couldn’t get the Qt repository to work. Notepadqq said it would try to make do with the old Qt, but I passed. As for the others, I just checked out the other suggestions and som...

Re: (power user) Text Editor Needed

The challenge with getting such editors into the official software repositories is finding skilled people who are willing to invest the needed time and to maintain such an editor in the official software repositories. Which is why they should charge for it. And yes, I have searched, multiple times,...

[Solved] Text Editor Needed

I need to run a spell check, and a search and replace on multiple text files. I need to be able to convert all non-Unicode files to UTF-8 automatically. I need a text editor that will do all of this and be 100% compatible with UTF-8. Boxer can do everything except the last and gEdit is only good bec...

Re: Characters Not Showing In All Applications

I did a little more research and came across a reference to ICU.

I searched Software Manager and found two packages for developers and two that weren’t. Of the two one had a higher version number.

I installed libicu4j-4.4-java and it solved the problem.

The same font in different applications will still not show the characters in one. All the fonts that I have tried a...

Re: Multi-Booting with MS-DOS

Did you just copy the downloaded files to the cd burn program ? If that is all you did, it will not boot. You must make a cd bootable iso file. (iso buster, kiso, or mkisofs) there are likely other programs. You need not only the dos files you downloaded but most important a 'boot image file "conta...

Re: Multi-Booting with MS-DOS

Just because you have a fat12 partition , does not make it bootable. I activated it to be bootable using the Disk Manager in Windows. The partition on the hard drive is empty since the DOS has not been installed yet. If it would install, then all the files would be in there correct place. Now all o...
