Re: Wrong SSD temperature reading breaks installation

Updating: I ran a Memtest and that seemed to be the issue. Replaced with working RAM and got the install to run successfully.

Re: Wrong SSD temperature reading breaks installation

Thanks for the reply. So the problem for OP was with the USB system doing the install? In my case it appears to be a hardware issue on the computer because it happens with different USB sticks running Mint or Ubuntu. I was trying to install on new SSD. However, the issue seems to happen as well on a...

Re: Wrong SSD temperature reading breaks installation

Confirming, exact same problem with Kingston UV400 120GB. Install fails with either temperature error or I/O error. Same errors with Mint and Ubuntu. However, I reformatted the disk to FAT using my Mac and it appears to be functioning as external drive, so appears to be some kind of firmware bug. OP...

Re: BIOS not recognizing HDD

Whenever I have gotten "no bootable disc" it is because BIOS is trying to boot CD-ROM. It is possible you have the correct order of HDDs but it is still going to CD-ROM first.

If the CPU fan is secure, the problem good be too much or too little thermal paste. Did you by any chance add thermal paste in addition to what comes with fan?

Re: Android MTP not coming up after upgrade

Any chance Banshee or a media player is open at the same time? I found a thread about a bug with Banshee (which I often have running in the background). Force-quitting Banshee did the trick for me.

Re: Some Help : New Hardware & Moving to Linux

You definitely do not need an SSD for your data. If boot time is not important (eg if the machine is going to be powered on 24/7), then there is no advantage at all to an SSD. I will say that once I tried an SSD on my primary computer I did not want to go back. Once you get used to a boot time of 8-...

Does it not like /home as your mount point? Could you try /media?

Re: Some Help : New Hardware & Moving to Linux

Sorry, I missed the bit about PDF digital signatures. Just do a google search, there are open source versions. It looks like jsignpdf will work for you (although it appears you will have to install it manually. It may take you some time but I am confident you will get it to work. Just post here on t...

Re: Some Help : New Hardware & Moving to Linux

My main advice to you is to keep your current Windows computer while you are "weaning" and build your Linux computer clean. I think your transition will be easier than you think, and it will be easier to do if you don't have to worry about partitioning and such. You will also save $100 on having to ...

Re: I give up

And another thing is I am a window user (I still use windows 7 to play pc games) so UNITY desktop appearance is not so friendly for me. Seriously it was hideous from the point of usability(from my point of view). //Pardon my English. It's not my native language.//  That is the beauty of Linux...

Re: No Sound via HDMI with several applications

When you open "sound settings", does it list HDMI as the active output? If not, is it listed as available? In the past I have almost always needed to manually set up HDMI as the default output. Try: pacmd set-default-sink 1 This should permanently change your pulse audio settings to your HDMI sink. ...

Re: I give up

If Linux Mint is not for you, go ahead back to Windows/Mac. If you want stuff that is free and open source, you have to make certain sacrifices. You cannot assume that the available software will have every function of the comparable Windows/Mac programs, and you have to be prepared for stuff to bre...

Another possibility currently working for me in XUbuntu 14.04: Install Nautilus as your file manager. Works with my Android phone. Sorry I didn't think of that earlier.

If anyone is still struggling, in my experience the best way to do file transfer is using a web browser on the Linux machine and the Airdroid app on the phone.

Re: Linux Mint 17.1 multiple issues (X, sound, MTP)

What output are you trying to use for sound? You may need to set your default "sink" (soundcard) and "profile" (HDMI, analog, or both). HDMI is often disabled by default.http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=160941 As for MTP, I have never had a smooth experience with media devices. The b...

Re: Clementine crashes Cinnamon

I've always found Clementine to be very CPU-intensive whether running on Mac or Linux. No idea why--it does not look that much different than the other media players. I have not had the crashes you are describing but I am not surprised.
