However, I have abandoned this line of enquiry and gone back to trying to fix my RadioMaster RMTX16S mk 11 tx., which as been problematic since purchase and has yet to fly a model.

You cannot make changes to your / partition with gparted booting normally. To make the changes you have to unmount the partition first and you cannot unmount your / partition. The conclusion to my problem appears to be most likely the quality of the USB sticks I have been buying.
I will seek out and purchase quality brand names, as has been suggested.

I normally just F12 on boot to get the BIOS boot list and select the usb stick. I have BIOS boot mode set to Both, can't remember whether it is legacy first or UEFI first, but both work. Burn my sticks with mint's usb image writer or use ventoy. That's good Andy. I am pleased that you and others do...
