Re: how merge old Win partition with Lm19.2

Two things to consider: First, the two partitions must be adjacent to each other. It's all right if you have unallocated disk space in between, but you cannot have another system partition located in between them. Second, I've always found it easier to work from outside the OS when working with disk...

Re: Replacement for Lithium Ion Batteries?

Years ago my younger brother was involved with racing 1/10 scale rc cars. This was back when nickel cadmium batteries and motors with bushes were the norm. Then, in the quest for longer run times and faster cars, people started racing gas powered cars. (The so-called "gas" is actually a bl...

Re: is 19.3 tricia ready for prime time?

Hello @ karlchen - Thanks for the reply and for the explanation. Looks like I didn't read the LM 19.3 release notes in their entirety. My machine is an old Lenovo Thinkpad T400, which has been running Linux Mint Cinnamon without issues since LM 15 Olivia, and I haven't experienced any problem...

Re: is 19.3 tricia ready for prime time?

The only major thing I've noticed is that LM 19.3 shuts down quite a bit faster than any of the previous 19.x versions, at least on my own machine.

Re: BIOS upgrade?

You do not need any operating system (Windows, DOS, or Linux) to flash the BIOS. On the e7240, you can flash the BIOS from the BIOS boot menu. Go back, read the link I posted, and re-read the instructions in my post. Just be sure to disable Bitlocker if you have it enabled and do not power off the m...

Re: Kernel Upgrade/Out of Space/Stuck at Login

Hello @RJHays and welcome to the Linux Mint forums. If you can still boot into Recovery Mode, this is what I would do: 1.) Figure out which Linux kernel you want to keep, and boot into Recovery Mode for that particular kernel. 2.) Open the root shell prompt, and enter "sudo apt-get autoremove -...

Re: Installation from USB flash drive, black screen

Hello @ NewlyMinted85 - OK. If your installation media isn't the problem and the .iso file you used isn't corrupted, then it could be a video driver issue. This is a common issue with Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, especially on hardware that's very old or very new, such as yours. Follow this proced...

Re: Installation from USB flash drive, black screen

Hello @ NewlyMinted85 and welcome to the Linux Mint forum. If it's a new machine, then the odds are it uses UEFI boot, not MBR boot. On UEFI systems, the installation media must be formatted FAT32, not NTFS. Anything formatted NTFS will not be recognized as a bootable device. Now here's the real pro...

Re: Can't extend (/home) Partition.

You've got a bit of a mess on your hands. First of all, in order to "extend" the ext4 partition you've got highlighted at the end of the disk, the unallocated space on the disk must be directly adjacent to it, you cannot have other disk partitions located in between them. But it gets worse...

Re: Dual boot LM19 on Win7 32 bit PC

Hello @ Wallace and welcome to the Linux Mint forum. There's only one piece of advice I can offer: In the future, if he ever decides to upgrade the memory from 4GB to 8GB, or whatever, then you should install a 64 bit version of LM in order to take advantage of the additional memory. (A 32 bit OS ca...

If you ever see me standing on line at the supermarket, do yourself a favor and get on another line. Re: Made a complete mess of Mint install

I dunno. Whenever I'm doing a clean install of any operating system, regardless of it being Windows or Linux, the very first thing I do is to create a new partition table on the disk. A lot of O.E.M.'s will modify the boot sector in order to provide access separate disk partitions which contain spec...

Re: Unable to locate and overwrite windows

One of the "tricks" that Windows has learned is how to look like it's off when it really isn't. It called Fast Boot. As I recall there is a setting in Windows for that. I don't know where it may be located because I'm not a Windows user, and try to stay away from it as much as possible. S...

Re: Unable to locate and overwrite windows

First off, /dev/sdc is listed as a USB device; is it the USB flash drive you're using as your installation media? More than likely, although the size seems off. Any chance that your Windows 7 installation is encrypted? An encrypted disk isn't recognized as having a structured filesystem, so the inst...

Re: Prepping laptop for sale

Hello @ Mudskipper - Things like dban, dd, or shred are all right for conventional hard drives, but they're not really good to use on a SSD, since they overwrite every sector on the drive, which takes away from the SSD's lifetime writes. Since you're selling it along with the laptop, you might or mi...

Re: Linux Installing to RAM + Lost Windows

Hello @ mcwil - Don't take it personally, but you have your priorities backwards. Your first priority should be to fix the boot problem with Windows 10, then worry about installing Linux Mint later. Trust me. Been there, done that, and getting it backwards is only creating more issues to deal with l...

Re: It's like Microsoft is driving you toward Linux

If there is one cardinal rule to running a Windows OS and maintaining your sanity, it's this: You must create backup images on a regular basis. Years ago (in the Windows XP era) I got into the habit of creating a backup image on every weekend prior to Patch Tuesday, which occurs on the second Tuesda...
