Re: Installing Samba Server in Mint 18

Wish I would've found this post before I setup Samba on Sarah. Nothing seemed to work, configuration tool wouldn't load, and I spent hours re-installing, I decided to install from source, and now I manage server from Webmin, a very handy tool.

How to dual boot Linux Mint 17.3 and Windows 10 in UEFI mode - Personal setup

I got tired of repairing grub or windows boot manager. So, I spent three days getting this to work the way I wanted. With the normal UEFI setup, grub installs in the EFI boot partition that Windows will create on installation. Normally if you lose the EFI partition, you won't be able to boot, either...

Re: Number of Linux users is growing!

I certainly agree with Portreve. For years I've been trying to introduce people to Linux. I also assumed Android users would have no problem making the switch. What I realized over the years from letting my friends use my computer when they visit, is that whichever OS I have up, dual-booting Win10/L...

Re: USB boot Option

You can try re-installing your BIOS, or updating. Before you try that you can use FDD, if your BIOS still shows that option. Truthfully, I've never heard of this ever. You can try this link.

Re: Dual boot WIn 10 and linux mint

Try shift when the splash screen appears, and that will make grub show on boot, and give you a option of which OS to boot into. Once back in your Linux box, install Grub Customizer, with this tool you can choose boot order, and a host of other grub configurations. I prefer to use Grub as my boot man...

Re: installing linux using a sdcard

I've done this with Mint 16, it wouldn't install from thumb drive, and I was really hungry for that version of mint. So, I extracted file to sdcard, placed it a reader, and it worked. I would choose FDD in my boot-manager. I don't know what that was about, but it does work. Tinker and learn somethin...

Re: Fails to boot( Was: Grub not installing)

Sounds like the drives about to fail. I had this problem a few years back on a old hard-drive, that I installed just about every Linux flavor. Eventually I started to get issues with grub, mbr, and system locating my drive, and Linux installs wouldn't finish, and if it did, then the drive would cras...

Re: Linux Mint Cinammon/Win 10 dual boot

I just set up a dual-boot system for myself, running Windows 10, Linux Mint 17.3. Windows has to be installed first, and then your have to shrink the volume within your Windows environment, to make non-allocated space for your Linux Mint installation. Other instructions advise use EBCD to configure ...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

I was using Ubuntu until they switched to Unity, then I started looking for another distro. I pretty much tried them all. Tried Mint on a virtual machine, and found what i've always been looking for in a OS. I install from usb, and was having a problem with installing Mint 16 from usb, and kept gett...

Try installing Preload from repository, it should help speed things up. And you should upgrade your memory if your running 64-bit, that'll also help.

Re: Password-protected wifi access points invisible

The software tells the hardware how to behave. Drivers work differently across different OS's, each OS uses the hardware differently. Windows 8, is a virtual OS, and works differently from Windows 7, It does sound like a driver issue, every machine I've fixed with those drivers has had some sort of ...

Streaming to newer Samsung Smart TV's using MediaTomb

So, I've spent 2 days trying to stream from MediaTomb to my Samsung TV UN55ES6550, with no luck. They have a patch method, but I'm unable to compile from the source code that's provided on the website, and I'm not trying to screw up the setup I already have. I have MediaTomb configured to stream to ...

That's great, this is what prevented me from installing Mint in the past. I searched on this topic, but couldn't find anything, and thought I was the only one having this problem. I have three other Linux distros on my usb. Mint installed on VMware, and when I burned to disk, it installed on my lapt...

Re: How to: Tell others about Linux.

Not trying to be funny, but people have to discover Linux on their own. Ever try to get a person to use Android that has a Iphoney, totally impossible. A whole different breed, my friend, like freakin drones. Your aunt & uncle are special, and very open minded, your lucky to have them. I was the the...

Linux and Windows file sharing using Samba - Home Network

After I install any Linux distro, I like to setup a network share. I need all my machines to communicate, so after I update, then I setup my share. There's a wealth of information on this topic, some incomplete, and others a little to complicated and related to specific hardware or software. As with...

Hey, Happy New Year to all. I'm from the states, New York to be exact. I'm new to Linux Mint, but have been using Linux Distros since 2009. I use all operating systems, but prefer Linux. I'm a help desk support technician, but I love the security side of networking. I'm also running Kali Linux, a pe...

Re: how to backup, so can reinstall whole system

Hey, what's up. Happy New Year, and many many more. Since I've been using linux I've explored this subject. I just install linux mint on my system and broke it a few times, now that I have things properly set up I wan't to perform a backup. It seems the only way to perform this task is if you've cre...
