And which version of Mint.
Sorry, should have included this information (have updated the OP with it now).

I'm using Cinnamon on Mint 17.2 (upgraded from Mint 17->17.1->17.2, possibly upgraded originally from Mint 16).

Re: System tray not working

System tray a windows term? Oh really...

The notification area (well, the "Notifications" applet but doesn't appear to be an area or system tray) dies too when I try to add it.

Re: Phantom ffmpeg package

Sorry guys for not getting back to you. I think it was to do with an apt-repo (most of which I've now removed) as I haven't seen ffmpeg in some time although I'm not sure if it got fixed because I've changed to using apt-get for updates now.

Thank you for your explanation Cosmo. That makes sense.

System tray not working

Somewhere along the way I've lost my system tray from my panel - Cinnamon on Mint 17.2 Rebecca. When I try to add it, via the applets settings, it comes up with a little red LED (presumably indicating something has gone wrong). It's a bit of a common search term so I'm having difficulty tracking dow...

Re: Can't install libsdl-dev due to xorg-edgers

Well I did find a fix, eventually. aptitude install libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 I had to run that on any of the problematic packages (example given above) and keep saying N (for no) until it presented an option that wasn't demanding I uninstall most of my system. Usually took 10-12 attempts to find that so...

Phantom ffmpeg package

So, ffmpeg keeps showing up in the Update Manager.

However, I can't remove it? It doesn't exist in Synpatic/apt-get etc.

[FIXED] Can't install libsdl-dev due to xorg-edgers

This problem came about when I decided to try and compile the latest version of freeciv (2.5; only 2.4 is in the official repos). I seem unable to purge the xorg-edgets ppa from my system without wiping out most of my system: # ppa-purge ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa Updating packages lists PPA to be removed:...

Gigolo homepage:

I did see this in the Software Manager but wasn't really aware what gvfs was so skipped over it. It requires GTK2 though I will still try it later.

None of the extra features will address core gameplay problems. I'm sure the art / writing will be great but the gameplay will still be weak sauce.

SSH + SCP/SFTP GUI Connection Managers

As part of my day to day job, I'm working a lot on remote servers. So I want to minimize time spent typing in connection details by using connection / session managers for SSH and file secure file transfers via SCP / SFTP. I was previously doing everything on the CLI using 'ssh' and 'scp'. Any good ...

I have the same laptop (or a very similar one at least). I have made some discoveries here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=188873 Basically the discrete GPU (the Nvidia one) won't show by default. You have to add it manually. I haven't got the exact process down yet but will le...

Re: Unable to see discrete GPU on laptop with hybrid graphic

Well this seems to explain things a bit better: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.17/README/randr14.html The X server does not automatically enable displays attached to the non-NVIDIA graphics device in this configuration. To do that, use the xrandr command line tool: $ xrandr --se...

Re: [mint 17] 3 annoying bugs: wallpaper reset, tray icon, h

I think you can solve the tray icon issue by using an alternative tray.

I found this one had no issues with pidgin or other apps as pidgin wasn't the only one for me:

Unable to see discrete GPU on laptop with hybrid graphics

I am unable to see the discrete GPU on my laptop with hybrid graphics. The discrete GPU is the accelerated one so this is a bit of a problem in terms of performance! I know it is there and works because I can boot into Windows (albeit I have to tweak the BIOS* to switch between legacy and UEFI boot ...

Re: Shadowrun: Hong Kong - Kickstarter

Really overrated series. I was quite disappointed. Good story telling was let down by OKish stories and really under used side characters who basically turned out to be nothing more than arcs to the next segment in the main story. Great example is the girl outside the bar in Dragonfall. She constant...

No, it didn't. However... I have made progress. Soooooo.... it transpires the nvidia card was not being used AT ALL which makes me actually somewhat impressed with the performance of the onboard Intel card for some games. charles@charles-mint-Z500 ~ $ xrandr --listproviders Providers: number : 1 Pro...

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

Major issues: A real lack of... tools for managing/controlling common hardware issues. The one affecting me is that I have an integrated GFX chipset (Intel) and dedicated Nvidia GPU but it appears congifuring this will take some real tinkering. This is pretty common on modern laptops and it concern...
