Re: Does having LUKS enabled make switching distros more difficult (or different)?

Ok, so the standard Mint installer (the ISO image we so commonly use) won't have any hiccups due to being used on a LUKS machine? Just want to be positive before starting! Have finally backed-up everything & made my ISO thumbdrive (32bit xfce, it's an older netbook..), am ready to install just want ...

Does having LUKS enabled make switching distros more difficult (or different)?

I've got a laptop that I want to change distros (well, re-install Mint w/ XFCE actually but the reasoning behind it requires a full-on re-installation, no updates or anything are going to help here there's a fatal problem and the system needs to be wiped), I figured since it's linux to linux (even s...

HDMI's audio works sometimes, distorted other times... Also, my 3.5mm audio output to my TV isn't giving my TV any audio

I recently got a new (refurb'd) laptop, a dell e7440, and am getting really worried I'm going to find it impossible to use it as my media center due to no audio (except the laptop's speakers, which are completely inadequate for movies, have been using them half the time though as they're all that wo...

Re: Installed Mint from iso on thumbdrive, cannot revert to windows the same way - did I break the bootloader or somethi

" Are you saying that Dell has Linux drivers for the video?" No, I was told that the only way to fix it was to install the drivers from dell.com, and that those were to be installed via windows only (and that it was a firmware upgrade / below the OS, that it wouldn't matter if I switched the OS bac...

Cannot put windows back on after having installed Mint, did I mess up the bootloader?

I got a new(refurb'd actually) laptop (dell 7440 with win10) and, before verifying everything worked, I put Mint on it. When I then wired the only video-out (HDMI), I found that there was a problem, a thin bright-white fuzzing around sharp lines (makes it so pictures and videos are 'acceptable' and ...

Installed Mint from iso on thumbdrive, cannot revert to windows the same way - did I break the bootloader or something?

I got a new laptop and promptly put Mint on it and began configuring it, like an idiot, not having tested everything....the only video-out (hdmi), which I use a lot, has terrible contrast and I've found that I need to get the drivers from dell.com - but it can only be done through windows. So I've g...

Re: New laptop's HDMI output gives terrible contrast, drivers need updating but I'm unsure how :( (Dell 7440)

I'm unsure how to discern what's recommended, I am under the impression that the driver is old though (multiple generations too old), I know the drivers are on dell.com but don't know how to install from there *and* have been told that's not the right way - but I don't know what other way there is, ...

New laptop's HDMI output gives terrible contrast, drivers need updating but I'm unsure how :( (Dell 7440)

I know that dell.com has drivers, but I have no idea how to use them...I've used Mint for a couple years, and my last laptop (the one I'm typing on now, actually) is wired to my TV via VGA, and the image quality is just fine for me *but* the laptop's about to go, so last week I bought a new one that...

Trying to install linux iso on broken-screen(otherwise-fine) laptop, but cannot figure out how to change boot-order upon

So I've wired the laptop's HDMI up to a monitor and I can boot it into windows just fine that way (windows showing up on my external monitor *only after the OS has booted*, no video signal goes through the HDMI until it's all loaded and suddenly the external monitor gets the windows (win8 I think) l...

Cannot update avconv (am trying to get audio-only via youtube-dl)

My computer couldn't find avprobe or ffprobe (the errors I was getting when originally trying the youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 url.com command to get audio-only), but installing libav-tools *did* seem to take care of that, although I'm still unable to get audio-only results, if I tr...

Re: Networking/internet icon missing from panel, cannot access any wifi networks now!

Well, I've wired his laptop directly to the modem and downloaded 3rd party network config GUI's (wikd or wicd, and wifi-manager iirc) but had problems with both, has anyone here ever used either of those programs? I've got them both setup on his (32bit linux mint) laptop now, but couldn't get on our...

Re: Networking/internet icon missing from panel, cannot access any wifi networks now!

Not your set up exactly, but on 17.3 Mint, you can go to "Menu", "Preferences", "Applets", and select the Network Manager to attempt to put it back into the panel. (toggle the button back on so it turns green.) I have had applets disappear from the panel a couple times; from what appear to be myste...

Re: Networking/internet icon missing from panel, cannot access any wifi networks now!

I can do that, but it is a PITA - could you explain what doing that will do? I am going to get it seutp to do now though (it's an ordeal because that laptop's screen is broken, so have to move and wire it to its (rather large) external monitor to do this lol, but will give it a shot!)

Re: Networking/internet icon missing from panel, cannot access any wifi networks now!

Can you tell me which specific way to get there that you're referring to? There's lots of 'settings' areas and I'm unsure which you speak of - I can all but guarantee you it's not there, but if you tell me which you mean specifically I can be more clear (and take screenshots to help make this clear ...

Networking/internet icon missing from panel, cannot access any wifi networks now!

So once in a while we have to reset our wifi router and create a new network name, afterwards we reconnect the 3 laptops here to the new network and all is fine - the last time that we had to do this, however, one of the 3 turned out to be missing the networking/internet icon from its panel! (two of...

Plz help me make this .mkv into a .wmv!!!

I've spent so much time and have no luck on the subreddits for these things, hopefully someone here can help. I've tried ffmulti, avconv and that whole library (though I'm unsure I have entire library somehow, but i dunno how to check if i do or don't), i've been going through Software Manager for a...

"Permission Denied", "read-only" and other basic file errors

I'm at my wits' end here, I liked a lot about mint and even got my brother using it, but now I'm having problems simply copy/pasting simple media files. Examples: 1 - I go to copy a picture from my laptop onto SD card for my brother, I select 'copy' on the image, then go to the SD card and click 'pa...

Re: "Read Only"- I cannot even copy an MP3 to an SD card!

Still cannot figure this out! I just tried with a fresh file, I copied a jpg from this site to my desktop. I insert my SD card. Right-click the jpg file, hit 'copy', then go to my SD card---- right-click, but the 'paste' option is faded-out / not available! If I right-click the jpg on the desktop, a...

"Read Only"- I cannot even copy an MP3 to an SD card!

So I was going to backup some of my media, in preparation for some desktop enviro (or even OS) switching, and am hitting a ridiculous problem that seems untrue but this is really happening - I cannot even right-click, copy a file from my laptop's harddrive, and paste it onto an SD card that is plugg...

Switching between DE's (XFCE-->KDE) and distro's

I'm interested in both switching my XFCE mint setup to KDE, and in changing distro's entirely (or adding a distro to have dual-boot, well, triple-boot lol as I've already got 2 *nix systems on this) Is changing desktop enviro's far simpler than trying an entirely new distro? I'm interested in swappi...
