Re: Install Hauppage 955Q TV Tuner in LinuxMint easily.

Granted this isn't much of a tutorial but it literally is that easy. The 4.2 kernel allows the tuner to work without patching. The Hauppage 955Q costs $79.99 and I think I got mine for $73.99 on Amazon. Yesterday I was in Best Buy and Hauppage has a tuner which is for XBox which is $49.99. I had rea...

Re: USB sound card 0% volume is not bottom

Run this command:

alsamixer

Or

sudo alsamixer

Select your USB Sound card and raise the volume. Usually with the Shift and + key (shooting from the hip on that one) directions should be in alsamixer box.

How'd you cut your teeth on Linux?

I remember being such a power user (or thought I was) in the late 90's that it was just a natural progression to dabble in Linux. All the computer mags of the day nearly demanded it as a power user. Then I got rapidly sick of Windows 98, especially 98 SE. It was special all right. Started as most di...

Install Hauppage 955Q TV Tuner in LinuxMint easily.

I bought a Hauppage 955Q TV Tuner which didn't work under Mint 17.2. The directions for the tuner included building and patching a kernel which I hadn't done in about a million years. I had discovered that the tuner would work under 4.2 kernels so to keep things simple I took my work computer (which...

DOD Common Access Card (CAC) installation

I made a web page and quick tutorial on using a DOD CAC card on LinuxMint. Some of you eagle eyes will see that the screenshots are on Debian but I promise you I worked through this on LinuxMint 17.2 then took the screenshots while doing my Debian system. Exact same steps. http://www.hagensieker.com...

boot-repair

I haven't poked around in this forum much but yesterday I took a 750 GB drive in a laptop and replaced it with a 250 GB SSD. I used Clonezilla to clone the disk then realized no way it would fit. Then I shrunk and cloned the linuxmint partition and proudly installed it, then realized there was no bo...

Linuxmint on repurposed computer

I'm a longtime Linux user and recently been on a kick of repurposing old laptops. I can't help myself but when I go in a Thrift store and find a Windows Vista or Win 7 era laptop for a couple bucks I always buy it. This is a link to my most recent foray for my office. This was a bit overboard as I s...

How to VNC to your Linuxmint machine

I thought this would be easy under Linux Mint 17 Mate as there was a desktop sharing settings. Thought you just turned it on and it would work. Default program is called vino. I made sure it was running but I just never could figure it out. Anyway remove vino in Software Manager and install x11vnc o...

Postfix question - virtual user

I am trying to set it up where any email address to @hagensieker.org goes to my account. I'd like if admin / postmaster / info etc all resolved to john@hagensieker.org The only accounts on the actual machine are john, root Everytime I send to admin@hagensieker.org I get an email back that says: Diag...

Re: Postfix Squirrelmail issue

It ended up being squirrelmail config just as DrHu suggested. Sorta. First of all I spent 10 minutes just trying to figure out where my mail was going as /var/log/mail.log wasn't really showing any errors other than the outgoing mail not outgoing and being stacked. So I went looking for it. Sure eno...

Postfix Squirrelmail issue

I'm brand new at this. Linux Mint 17 running postfix, dovecot, and squirrelmail. Bought a domain from Namecheap called hagensieker.org Between mail programs such as gmail, mac os x mail, and thunderbird mail my server seems to be working perfectly. Everybody can send and receive from inside and outs...

Re: Best music player?

Another vote for Clementine. Use it bit perfect, handles huge libraries well. Wish they'd give some more options to the Spotify plugin but it's adequate. Check out DeadBeef. Some say it sounds better than Clementine but I don't like the interface very well. Oh and Clementine has a remote app for And...

Re: Upgrade-itis

I love that picture, the tube amp is awesome beside the laptop! I have a tube stereo system set up in my living room, but you rarely see other people using tubes these days. So cool to see it mixed with Mint! Don't you just love the sound quality that tubes give? So warm, and beautiful. As for upgr...

I have a computer at work that had Mint 13 Maya on it. It's an old Dell laptop somebody basically gave away to me. It serves only one purpose in life which is to connect to wifi and stream Spotify and Pandora to my stereo system at work for background music. No files, no personal data, no nothing r...

Re: Installing Mint 17 Cin 32 bit over Mint 16 or start afre

Just go ahead and run your install disk booting into Live Mode. You'll see whether or not Cinnamon is running okay or not. Play with it for awhile and if it suits you go ahead and hit the install icon on the desktop. If not try Mint 17 MATE. I prefer it over Cinnamon anyway. I'd start fresh if I wer...

Re: What Linux Distros do you currently use?

I actually forgot a couple things. I upgraded my work laptop from Maya 13 to Mint 17 yesterday. Also I have two more Raspberry Pi's that run variants of Raspian. One is a mobile 3g wifi hotspot I made as I travel to some pretty unsavory locations for work and by that I mean open networks in places y...

What Linux Distros do you currently use?

I'm going to guess most of us use LinuxMint based on where we are. I started thinking about this and realized I use a lot more Linux than I thought. LinuxMint 17 MATE - on home laptop system set up as desktop replacement system LinuxMint 13 MATE - on a very old laptop at work hooked to a tube amplif...

Re: Lines flash across edge of screen when launching

Here's another observation. Anything launched from the task bar (by the menu button) exhibits this behavior. Looking real close I can even see it on the default background. Launching the exact same program from an icon on the desktop or from the menu does NOT exhibit this behavior. Something to do w...
