Blank DVD's and CD's not being seen
We've received a rash of complaints from HeliOS kids and parents lately that they cannot get their burners to open blank cd's for burning. Both Brasero and KB3 complain that there is no media inserted. In the past month, this has struck my own machine as well. All systems reporting this problem are ...

Re: OpenJDK java control panel
I'd like to know about clearing the Java cache as well. Have the Openjdk installed but gf is complaining now that Pogo will not work. Growing pains, I understand but still a pain. Are there remnants of the Java cache? How do we clear them?

Mint to be default install for Linux Against Poverty
After testing, retesting and dealing with the politics of distros, Linux Against Poverty will be using Linux Mint exclusively for Linux Against Poverty 2010 (http://www.linuxagainstpoverty.org) Mint not only saves us time by including all the extra stuff, it seems that most of the bugs found in the ...

We're coming your way
Linux Mint is now the "official" distro install on HeliOS Project computers. http://www.heliosinitiative.org. It is our pleasure to make this great distro better-known to new and old Linux users alike. "Our kids" will undoubtably be coming here on occasion to ask questions. We ta...

No...Ryan was just a coincidental addition. Linux Mint is the "official" install of The HeliOS Project. We will put over a thousand computers out this year with Mint on it. The Space12 project is just a drop in the bucket. We've begun to put a "why is linux free" icon on the desk...

Mint helps Documentary Film Makers
The HeliOS Project recently became involved with an East Austin Community Center called Space12. On the "wrong side of the tracks" and often un-noticed, we found that this place is trying to do good things for people that haven't really been given a chance. We began assisting Space12 last ...

Hey all...While white space restrictions left specific photo's out, I want you to know that we assured that Mint was represented at Lin08 Portland. You may find the very bottom of the linked article of interest specifically... h http://linuxlock.blogspot.com/2008/10/linux-reaches-out-to-portland.html

system update kills wifi
Not seeing this problem reported elsewhere in the forums. fresh install of kde mint 5, I can get wifi up in a couple clicks. Once I update the system, network manager reports that there are no wireless services/signals. Manually add the ssid, it finds it but shows it as having no signal. I try to co...

kde mint - updates break wireless
Hi folks - in a real time crunch here and I've looked a bit for the answer. Not saying it's not there, just have critical research to do and updating kde mint 5 has broken my wireless. All I have is wireless - no hardwire connections available. Installed kde mint, installed driver via ndiswrapper, s...

Re: Menu items showing blank pages
I left part of the equation out and I apologize. when we set up their computers, we always include a top panel and put some of the most important configuration apps there. ie: compiz/system menu/mint software install/etc. The pages from the system menu such as default applications are only missing w...

Re: Synaptic missing from KDE Tasty/classic menu
That's a neat trick and one I've been needing. You have no idea how many callbacks we get because people install things that break their system...in retrospect, I can see the wisdom of the KDE DevTeam in doing this. Now, does that mean if I take the "not" out of that line, it will reappear...

Menu items showing blank pages
there are several things in the system settings menu that are missing as well. Our last 9 Komputers4Kids installs all were showing blank pages for kde components/default appliciations, which is an improvement...it was completely missing from .44. This caused some problems early on because during pho...

Re: KDE start menu
Beat me to it...and I agree, even though the functionality of Tasty is better in theory, I prefer the old menu. I suppose if Tasty had been the default for all these years, it would have been the other way around. Just human nature I guess...much the same behavior people exhibit when being schooled ...

Re: Synaptic missing from KDE Tasty/classic menu
Yes, I can testify to this. Syanaptic is just much better than adept at everyday pacakage management. As of now, I am dropping down yakuake, sudo synaptic and going at it from that angle....as well, and I will start another thread for this, there are several things in the system settings menu that a...

Re: Control Center module menu items missing
Thanks Husse for your help. I do not of course run as root but there are times when I need to add files to directories such as /user/share/icons and user konqueror will not allow files to be added or deleted. What is odd is that I had the context open as root on a fresh install but somewhere in the ...

Re: Adapting 2 debs for Mint kde
OK...let's talk about some kdeartwork for Mint. While I enjoy and applaud the work done at PCLinuxOS, there are just too many applications I cannot get to work there. Most people are happy with the repos they offer and for the most part, they will suffice for most...but as much as I need to demonstr...

Re: Sound just went away !!!!
I can only imagine the frustration involved in being a coder and trying to run down problems like this. It takes a special person indeed. It is beginning to look like it's something in kmix and most likely some odd combination of hardware and software with my specific machine. Long story short, I to...

I can't tell you when it happened so I don't know if it was an update that did it or what. I needed to go to settings/control center/default apps in order to make some changes on my firefox properties. It wasn't there and still isnt. I've attached a screenshot so you can see. It is supposed to be th...

Re: Adapting 2 debs for Mint kde
Hey Boo, I will be glad to help with this. We do all of our work in KDE and every computer we build and put out is kde based. That's why I am happy to see KDE for mint maturing. It is the distro of choice for both our business and the hundreds of installs and computers we put out every year. you can...
