Re: Would you purchase a computer from a Linux system maker?

I bought an HP Dev One, but that doesn't exactly count I suppose. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

Re: Question about extensions in LMDE6

Thank you. I've got LMDE6 up and running on both machines now. So far it's flawless. It may be my projection bias here, but LMDE6 seems to be snappier and smoother than 21.2 on my older machine. But that's probably just me.

Re: Question about extensions in LMDE6

Thanks. That's the answer I was hoping for. I figured as much but I thought I'd check before committing my machines. I really do like what I've seen with LMDE6 in a VM. I've been checking it out for a few weeks. Now it's time to get serious with it. Thanks again.

Question about extensions in LMDE6

To preface, I have two desktops with one running LM 21.2 Cinnamon and the other Debian GNOME. I want to switch them both over to LMDE6. I have been testing LMDE6 in a VM and I really like it, except that it won't access extensions saying it cannot access the server. I like Cinnamon Dynamic Wallpaper...

Re: Non-Mint: MX Linux or Pop!_OS?

I have a feeling POP!_OS will be really amazing once they finish their Cosmic desktop environment written with Rust and it gets polished up. It's pretty good now but their new DE will really make it shine. MX KDE is really nice; MX is probably my favorite KDE distro. MX Tools should be in every dist...

Re: LMDE 5 Beta Testing

I'd be interested in testing LMDE 5, as well. I've always liked what the Mint team does. I haven't used Mint in quite a number of years, though, because I wanted to get as far away from Ubuntu as possible. I like what System76 is doing with POP_OS and their Cosmic DE but they use Ubuntu so I'll wait...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't every year since about 2000 been touted as the year of the linux desktop?

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

One of the things I like, too, about MX is that it is, in effect, sort of a semi-rolling distro. By that I mean while it remains based on the current Debian stable release for rock-solid stability, the MX developers routinely update the included software so you aren't really stuck with outdated vers...

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

I haven't used Mint in years. I have nothing against it (what's not to like?) but I've moved on. I've been using MX Linux as my main OS for quite some time. I think it was back around MX-15 or 16. It just keeps getting better and better. I've found nothing to compare with it from my viewpoint. It's ...

I read that piece earlier. Seems there may have been a communication breakdown. It certainly flamed some passions.

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

I run MX Linux on two older machines with 2gb and 4gb ram, and it makes them feel like brand new. I have three other machines right now that aren't very ancient and I run Manjaro Xfce on one, Mint Xfce on one (this one) and Win 10 on the other one just in case I ever have actual need for a Win machi...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

I've often thought what sends most new linux users back to Windows is that linux isn't Windows. You can't even really use the "but muh gamez' excuse any longer. Maybe they're fed up with Windows 10, but what they want is linux that's just like Windows. I've seen it more times that I care to thi...

Re: ArchLinux is it Debian based or RHEL?

A word of caution. If you have questions about Manjaro deal with it in the Manjaro forums. Don't go to the Arch forums to ask questions about Manjaro. It will not go well for you. Manjaro is not Arch, and they will be most happy to point that out to you.

Re: What is a good Linux distro for the computer illiterate?

You could give ElementaryOS a look. I've not used it but a friend of mine stuck it on his girlfriend's (she just has basic computer skills) laptop and she just loves it. I might throw it in a Vbox and take it for a spin myself just to check it out.

Mint 18, 19 and 20

Recently I read where the next three iterations of Mint following Mint 17 Qiana will likely be based on Mint 17 (or 14.04, if you will), perhaps for stability and Cinnamon refinement, I suppose. My question is whether Mint 18, for example, will require a fresh installation or whether it can be updat...

Re: Future of Firefox Asstralis and LinuxMint

I've used Firefox as my browser of choice for years and years. I like it the way it is, but change is coming. Australis is going to be here in less than two weeks. Short of actually testing out the beta(s), I've been watching video presentations about it. Actually, it may not be as bad as I initiall...

Re: 2014-The year of the Linux desktop?

In my experience, the number 1 thing holding many companies back from exploring the possiblity of using Linux as a Enterprise Desktop OS is the lack of MS Office and/or an Exchange capable email client other than Outlook. I know this is true at my company, I work in the IT depatment, and we'd have ...

I'm not sure why it would be running slow for you. One of my laptops is an old Acer i3 with 4GB RAM and Mint 16 Cinnamon runs just fine. Have your tried installing Mint with MATE or Xfce?

The hows, whys and wherefores of partitioning for Linux, or even in general in some cases, may seem intimidating at first, but once the light comes on for you, you'll soon be carving up large HDs like a holiday turkey without breaking a sweat.

Re: Will Installing Mint Overwrite Solydx? I Want it to.

Your "S" drive should probably have at least a / (root) and a swap partition already. It may even have a /home, but it may not. At any rate, when you choose Something Else it should recognize the partitions on your "S" drive, no matter what they are called by swap, /, (and maybe ...
