Re: What is a good Linux distro for the computer illiterate?

You could give ElementaryOS a look. I've not used it but a friend of mine stuck it on his girlfriend's (she just has basic computer skills) laptop and she just loves it. I might throw it in a Vbox and take it for a spin myself just to check it out.

Mint 18, 19 and 20

Recently I read where the next three iterations of Mint following Mint 17 Qiana will likely be based on Mint 17 (or 14.04, if you will), perhaps for stability and Cinnamon refinement, I suppose. My question is whether Mint 18, for example, will require a fresh installation or whether it can be updat...

Re: Future of Firefox Asstralis and LinuxMint

I've used Firefox as my browser of choice for years and years. I like it the way it is, but change is coming. Australis is going to be here in less than two weeks. Short of actually testing out the beta(s), I've been watching video presentations about it. Actually, it may not be as bad as I initiall...

Re: 2014-The year of the Linux desktop?

In my experience, the number 1 thing holding many companies back from exploring the possiblity of using Linux as a Enterprise Desktop OS is the lack of MS Office and/or an Exchange capable email client other than Outlook. I know this is true at my company, I work in the IT depatment, and we'd have ...

Re: Is Mint a little slow compared to Ubuntu ?

I'm not sure why it would be running slow for you. One of my laptops is an old Acer i3 with 4GB RAM and Mint 16 Cinnamon runs just fine. Have your tried installing Mint with MATE or Xfce?

Re: Feedback from a new user of mint.

The hows, whys and wherefores of partitioning for Linux, or even in general in some cases, may seem intimidating at first, but once the light comes on for you, you'll soon be carving up large HDs like a holiday turkey without breaking a sweat.

Re: Will Installing Mint Overwrite Solydx? I Want it to.

Your "S" drive should probably have at least a / (root) and a swap partition already. It may even have a /home, but it may not. At any rate, when you choose Something Else it should recognize the partitions on your "S" drive, no matter what they are called by swap, /, (and maybe /home). Format your ...

Re: Linux Mint 17 codenamed “Qiana”

May I have suggestion to the next - probably18th - version of Linux Mint's female name? I've got badly ill sister, her name is Renata. Of course it is not a must, just kindly ask. I think she would be happy to know her name would live forever. I must addmit I feel a bit stupid asking for that but i...

Re: So I can't watch Netflix streaming on Linux?

There are any number of tutorials on how to install Netflix in Ubuntu/Mint. It's a pretty simple PPA exercise. Fairly quick and painless.

If you're talking Debian or something else, well all bets are off.

I've used LastPass for quite some time and have never had an issue. I see no reason to use anything else.

Re: Why so many preinstalled apps?

I guess, if you want choice, you can always go to some other distro where some desktop just pops up after installation, and the user is left figuring out what to do next, how to do it, and where to do it at. As someone said up thread, if you don't like an app, just uninstall it. I've installed and u...

Re: Why does anyone use linux?

I use Linux because I find it to be a fast, stable OS that does pretty much everything I need an OS to do. On each of my Linux machines, I have Win 7 in a VM to be used for those odd times I need something that only runs in Windows, like Quicken and sometimes MS Office when I need to do something wo...

Re: 2014-The year of the Linux desktop?

We were talking about this at work earlier in the week. Enterprise will probably hang on until the bitter end, if there ever is an end. And if there is an end, it's decades away. Enterprise is not about jumping on the newest bandwagon where consumers want tablets to consume content. IT departments c...

I've got a 6850. I just use the recommended xservers-xorg-video-ati driver and haven't had any problems with anything.

Re: Ubuntu 14.04 rocks guys!! Did anyone test it on a tablet

I've thought about trying Ubuntu again on my tower connected to the TV in the living room, with the Unity environment. Right now I've got Mint 16 Cinnamon on it but I was thinking about something less desktop-y looking. I basically use it for streaming TV shows, Netflix, Hulu, etc., and the occasion...

I don't blame them. Ubuntu really don't have much to gain from running Ubuntu One, especially if they want to concentrate their focus elsewhere.

xenopeek's got it right. I tried several when I was looking hard at a Linux alternative to Quicken. The best free one I found for me was KMyMoney. I have used Quicken for so many years though, that it just didn't feel the same, but it's still pretty good for someone who isn't all set in their ways l...

Re: Parental controls

A parental control designed specifically for Ubuntu/Mint, where one could limit the time kids could be on the web or even block sketchy sites, would be much appreciated by many, many people.
