Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
I have another thought to follow: Every now and then I am in an seemingly endles black screen loop - no matter how many times I reboot, it always ends up not working. Max was half an hour so far. However, when I unplug the Docking Station (HP USB-C Universal Dock Model HSA-B005DS) it boots coorectly...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Thank you for your replies once more. @inernet_explorer: I triple checked what you wrote - those options are already disabled. No luck so far. What makes me think though: I compared your inxi-output with mine and have totally two differences (down to the version numbers): One I can explain, I have a...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
No, I tried that as well: Undoing the two crucial updates of that day (one kernel, one firmware package) didn't help either. Neither had I setup the Timeshift yet - I wanted to wait till the system is fully functional. Well... I did now, because who knows when this will ever happen? The SysRep App s...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Another update: Meh, must've been two lucky days. Same procedure every day: A variable number of black screen starts before I get to a working one. On warm reboot or shutdown and restart the whole thing starts anew. I kinda ruled out IOMMU too, disabled virtualization in the EFI menu, same ol' (thou...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Confirmed the other way around: It's working now (today as well) even before the firmware updates. I just installed them and I am waiting for a reboot to see how things are then.

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Thanx!
Yay and nay tho: I haven't installed these updates on my work machine yet, only discovered them on my private one just now. Or maybe they have been around that long already? Wondering. Well, I'll know tomorrow.

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Quick update: Following a number of other threads I tried a few tweaks concerning IOMMU kernel parameters on boot - no success. Yesterday I could do a seemingly infinite number of reboots - all to black screen. So I did a new installation (from the same USB device), keeping my separate /home partiti...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Yes, your understanding of the process is correct. Though today the number of attempts varied. I get between 1 and 5 fails before a successful boot. Disabling legacy boot didn't help either, sadly. I tried as soon as I read this. I did not read the linked thread yet though. Just a quick peek showed ...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
sometimes-it-works and sometimes-it-does-not on the HP ProBook 455 G7 This is exactly and reproducably (err... reproduceably?) what I am getting: two failing boots and one working. Black screen twice, all fine the third time. Yesterday and today. But et least it cleanly reboots using ctrl-alt-del o...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
I got a new laptop in return last week - same model, so here I am, back to topic. At the same time I can happily report that the issue is mostly resolved: \o/ I found an Amazon review that pointed out that it's important to switch that USB-C DP HD-option to ON in UEFI ('twas in German, pls. forgive ...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Are you dual-booting Windows on this computer? Yes, I was. Was? Yes. I am not booting anything on it any more: While searching UEFI to disable a DMA protection (suggested via the list, didn't find that option btw.) I decided out of curiosity to let the internal HW test do a quick run. Doesn't have ...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
True dat. Well then there's still hope. Also last night I contacted the x.org mailing list since the issue is well beyond Mint, obviously, and referred them to this thread because it contains a ton of logs and documented fixing attempts already. Idk if they are happy about that, but I will certainly...

Whee you were even faster - I just added to my last post
EDIT: Now let me add to this one. Bios update went through without any hiccups - and without any effect on this current issue. Sad sad.

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Thanks SMG. Let me see how I can get the update done: No physical network plug on this thing, and Windows isn't setup either for that. My other HP machine (Probook X360 440 G1) does an automatic bios update via ethernet :-/ Concerning power supply: Always plugged in (so far). Also I have to correct ...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Only after trying Kubuntu to rule out LightDM issues (nope, same black screen) I remembered that Fedora probably doesn't use LightDM ootb either (idk though). Anyway - another thing I tried with no luck so far. Yet another EDIT: From all the distros I just tried, Manjaro got the furthest: It apparen...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Do you have automatic login set up for this install? No I don't. Should I (for the sake of trying)? That would mean a fresh install bc I have my /home encrypted. Not too big a task though, it's still an all fresh install anyway (plus the updates and the kernels I tested), so nothing fancy happened ...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
The N/A in your inxi report is a missing device driver. Let me guess: That's either because it's a boot on kernel v.5.4 (no driver there) or a recovery boot (no driver loaded) on either of the newer kernels? Like I mentioned before? Could be? Because it's the same inxi output all the time, and I st...

Re: HP ProBook x360 435 G7
Why yes, here you go. As a remark: The previous outputs I considered from kernel v.5.8 were actually from the 5.9.8 mainstream kernel! This one now, as per last post request, is from the latest v.5.8 provided by the Mint repos. The optical result (black screen) is the same though. I also just remove...
