Re: Hard drive making periodic clicking noise

I checked the SMART value just now and I get the following: ID: 193 Attribute: Load/Unload Cycle Count Value: 1314 All the other assessments listed are OK, overall assessment is OK. The disk is listed as being powered on for 8 months and 6 days. This value is quite good considering that HDD was pow...

Re: HDD temperature kernel module

You could go directly to SYSFS to cut out the middle-man. I get my temperatures from hwmon as well, but using SYSFS. If you have the knowledge, there's no need to even use a program to do it. It's great project, still I can't see how we can get HDD temperature from the user space being on kernel 5....

Re: Mysterious access to Library Genesis

- maybe you've switched on DNS over HTPS (DOH) in your Firefox preferences - and maybe your Internet provider is blocking access with the DNS "poisoning" If these two conditions are met, this explains the issue. You can check point 1 in your Firefox settings and you can check point 2 sendi...

Re: Hard drive making periodic clicking noise

I'd like to add to Kadaitcha Man's comment, that clicks may be caused by low quality power or data cable. Turn of the computer and disconnect only the drive data cable, then turn on the computer. If no noise occurs, it is a good sign, the drive most likely is not faulty. Connect the data cable again...

HDD temperature kernel module

To get HDD temperature now we are using hddtemp , for example: sudo hddtemp /dev/sda /dev/sde output: /dev/sda: WDC WD30EZRZ-00GXCB0: 25°C /dev/sde: WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0: 28°C Anyway hddtemp has no upstream and can be deprecated at some point. But it seems more convinient to get HDD temperature from...

I have never upgraded my OS but install each new version on the next 30GB HDD segment. And never delete any distribution until it is slip to the point of beyond repair. LM 17.3, 18.3, 19.2, 19.3, 20 and 20.1, Debian Buster and Debian Testing Cinnamon, all of them, were and are working fine on this L...

Re: Non-ESR Firefox Profile

Several random thoughts on the subject. - Profiles are not backward compatible. When such new Firefox version is installed which changes profile structure, profile is converted automatically. So profile will be corrupted regarding previous Firefox version and you can't go back without backup. - To u...

I stopped ufw.
so, you made your choice :) Do you have installed an interface to control firewalld or you are doing that from command line? just curious... As I remember firewalld allows to fine-tune the traffic throughoutput, just to lazy to try it myself.

Re: What's wrong with my Firewall?

Should I stick with firewalld and leave ufw alone? On your screenshot you have both services running. Just stop of of them sudo systemctl stop uwf.service or sudo systemctl stop firewalld.service It is unknown how you installed FirewallD, but as FirewallD is an API only and you need to install GUI ...

Re: What's wrong with my Firewall?

Both FirewallD and UFW is not firewalls, it's just tools to manage iptables. It is unclear if you have disabled ufw.service while installing FirewallD. See systemctl status ufw.serice -- it is a bad idea to have two services trying to manage iptables at the same time and it produces a lot of trouble...

QTox is in the LM19.3 Software Manager and it produces an Install button. It has one 5-start review from 2/2019. https://qtox.github.io Oddly it is not listed in Synaptic Package Manager on the same machine. I didn't know that was possible. If you install it from flathub you will get it in the soft...

Re: Where to find qTOX?

If you don't want to compile it, there is an appimage version 1.17.3. , it's working fine. You can download it from this page Download - Tox or execute this code in terminal mkdir ~/Desktop/qtox-app cd ~/Desktop/qtox-app wget https://github.com/qTox/qTox/releases/download/v1.17.3/qTox-v1.17.3.x86_64...
