Re: Vaio laptop running hot

I appear to have cornered the rogue element causing the runaway cpu use leading to heat and fan roar: "web content". Awesome to hear! That one gave quite a chase. I often use an ad blocker when using older computers, as there is just so much junk on the web these days, browsing is getting to be the...

Re: Vaio laptop running hot

Allow me to clarify. By "This Linux newb", I was referring to myself. I didn't want my limited experience to accidentally come across as being a well versed expert. For some reason, maybe my own misinterpretation, it sounded like this was your first foray into Linux. It works so well on so many hard...

Re: Vaio laptop running hot

Take this Linux newb's observations with a grain of salt, but out of nothing more than sheer curiosity, I have installed various versions and distros of Linux on a plethora of computers. (having a career in I.T. I'm around varying machines all the time). Most of the time, Linux Mint in particular se...

Re: New monitor and oblong Mint logo

I notice you're running an nVidia card. In my limited experience of playing with Mint, if you are using an nVidia card, especially if you've installed the 3rd party drivers, the logo is quite distorted and low resolution. However, if you are using the built in Intel graphics, (which I'm betting you ...

Re: Huge Problems with USB Stick (aka flash drive)

Just to add an interesting counter point, I've had the exact opposite experience with Mint and flash drives. As a guy who has a bit of an issue with hoarding flash drives, Mint is my goto when Windows and MacOS just don't want to deal with said flash drives. For me they are more likely to work in Mi...

Re: Migrating from iPhoto to Mint

If I understand what you're asking, I think the easiest thing for you to do is the following. 1. On the Mac, tell iPhoto to "Download Originals to this Mac". (You can do this in iPhoto Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Photos) 2. After your Mac downloads all of the photos, select all of the photos, and you ...

Re: WiFi Printer that works with Linux Mint ...

brian_p, I'm quite glad to hear that you've have no issues with modern printers on modern Mint. I have had experiences that weren't so seamless, and I doubt that I am the only one. I've found HPs to be the most likely to "just work", but I've seen some HPs not be so simple. I have also seen printers...

Re: WiFi Printer that works with Linux Mint ...

Happy to give more info about my printer setup. The printer I am using is the HP Officejet 8620. The way the Instant Ink program works, is you don't ever pay for the ink directly. You pay for a preset number of prints a month. I am currently on the $2.99 monthly plan, which gives me 50 pages a month...

Re: WiFi Printer that works with Linux Mint ...

Another vote for HP here. I find they seem to "just work" when it comes to various Linux distros. As for the price of the ink, I have been subscribing to HP's "Instant Ink" program for a while now. I have yet to spend more than $40 dollars (US) a year on ink since signing up. It's cheap to print, an...

Re: Computer Build for Linux

I'd have to agree with jglen490. It's been my recent experience that I'm more likely to run into driver issues with Windows than I am with Linux. For example, I've got some no-name USB Wireless-G sticks that work very poorly and unreliably on Windows 10, yet their performance is solid on Linux Mint....

Conflicting SSD Advice

Happy Saturday Everyone. I was hoping to get some clarification on SSD advice, as I think I may be seeing some conflicting suggestions on the board. In one place on the forums, I read that Mint 17 includes TRIM support, and thus you shouldn't have to tweak the OS when using an SSD. But then I keep f...

Re: I do not like Mint 17...any input?

I am donating approximately 40 computers to charity, because they are too slow for what I need at my office, came with Windows XP, but are all still in good running condition. Despite being a mix of makes and models, Linux mint runs flawlessly on all but one. (Wifi isn't working on one old Gateway l...

You might want to try installing xsensors from the software center. It might give you an idea of how hot it's actually getting.

Re: Overheating - HP pavillion dm3

I think this may be driver issues. On every laptop I've tried Linux on, it seems to run warmer, and battery life is lower, than when it runs Windows. I'm still a Linux Noob, but that is my personal experience. It's as if in Windows, the hardware is able to achieve a low power state, but not in Linux...

Re: Intel E2180, GeForce 7600 GT - which mint to install?

You're using a dual core processor, and a GeForce 7600 GT, so from a horsepower standpoint you should be able to render any DE just fine. However, your biggest hang up here is RAM. You only have 1 gig. I would focus on a lightweight desktop to leave as much RAM as possible open for applications. Tha...

Re: Help optimising laptop for video editing (64 bit?)

Let me start off that I've been in computers for over 20 years, but I'm new to Linux. Video editing is one of those areas, like gaming, where you can't have "too much" power on a computer. That being said, you are attempting to do this on a computer that is very low power. You've got a CPU that's de...

Re: Lenovo laptop that runs Mint 16?

Something else to consider is a newer laptop, with a non-bleeding edge chipset in it. For example, Intel has been on their Haswell 4000 series processors for almost a year now. However, you can still find many new laptops with the previous generation 3000 series processors. Perhaps older processors ...

Re: Linux Mint (or Ubuntu generally) Desktop Speed

This is not about desktop environments or resource consumption. The reason you have issues with flash and Netflix is that in Windows, the GPU is doing the rendering, while in Linux you are not getting any GPU acceleration. The 7950 is considered a "legacy" card by Nvidia. The open source nouveau dr...
