First check with Linux Admin that 13 is still being supported - After all, you can't expect all Distros to be forever supported.

Most likely a conflict of Applications (One App interfering with another). It happens on all OS - Microsoft, Mac & Linux.

The first thing I do when playing with a Linux distro is to update the whole system (the shield thing on the right part of the panel), that way my system gets the right & latest drivers etc.
When I installed Olivia (Mint 16) & Petra before that, after updating everything worked perfectly.
