USB Storage Router attached

Network Attached Storage – NAS Having looked at all the prices of nas boxes and slowly recovered, I decided to try an attached USB drive to the router as a cheap nas (it has a USB slot). Unfortunately most of the forums' advice only consider Windows and not Linux and specifically not Linux Mint. Not...

Re: Security Tutorials

Don't disagree with the sentiments but perhaps a bit more of an explanation? Disabling javascript will also mean you won't be able to see most websites using it and that's a lot! If you are paranoid (like myself) you will agree a firewall is a must. Just so happens Linux Mint comes with UFW. It is a...

Re: TOR exit node ip banned

I had this in the past - what appeared to be the case is that the 'anonymous' person (the one using TOR) was using an IP address banned for spam. The TOR system uses many different IP addresses from different countries and cannot seem to control or not use those that have been and possibly still are...

Re: Remove/Delay inactivity shutdown

Have a look at Menu-Preferences-Screensaver and set the delays and also Power Management. As far as not having to put your password in on start and after 'sleep' mode etc, remember it is a valuable security measure. I know it can be a bit of a finger exercise. Get familiar with the Menu, it will sav...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Yes, I also started Linux a few times - until Mint came along. Ubuntu was a definite turn-off. Ran Mint for a while in dual boot mode and then found out rather quickly I didn't really need Windows at all. Except for one program (a Dutch language ancestor prog) so someone told me about Wine. Now? Dit...

Re: you are permanently banned from this website!

jahid

The add-on that was the problem - AnonymoX, apparently it uses proxies some of which may have been used by spammers (in the past) and were banned by many forums etc.
In fact all add-ons that use a proxy might have the same problem, I just know where to look now if it happens again.

Re: Things to do after installing?

Been busy with Mint 17 and only saw your last post recently. Turned on gufw? That is just the front-end for UFW. If you want to see the rules - 'sudo ufw status numbered ' (without the quotes of course). Usually ufw (and gufw) will be started as soon as booting. Typing 'sudo ufw enable' will tell yo...

Re: I do not like Mint 17...any input?

If you don't like MInt 17, well no loss then. But as I too have found out all Linux distros need a bit of savvy. Hands on from time to time and that makes it interesting. Windows is OK but for lazy people who want everything done for them, something the bad boys know only too well and come visiting ...

Re: you are permanently banned from this website!

Yes it seems a spammer problem. I also had some problem with being booted off the Mint Forum. Message was that my IP address was banned indefinitely. Having scratched my head a few times as I had not had this problem before, I run Firefox with add-ons and Mint 17 Mate, I asked Administration -WHY? T...

Re: Mint 17 RC Observation

Hi and thanks for your reply. I have solved the problem as follows, wiped all Bluegriffon data and prog (1.7.2) and installed 1.6.2. Ran immediately. No warnings about profile missing etc. I also installed the tar file in its own directory under home. So solved as far as I am concerned. :D Mint 17 R...

Mint 17 RC Observation

I have now installed Mint 17 RC. Great and works OK. However, a few observations, it takes quite a long time to load and start. Once done, speed is fine with most software. BlueGriffon now no longer starts up (it worked in Mint 16) and gives this message - 'Your BlueGriffon profile cannot be loaded....

Re: Help with rules to allow network printer in UFW

Just for the fun of it I re-installed Mint 16 - and as expected after formatting UFW firewall the network printer had gone on holiday. Now, you can set up the rules in UFW in a number of different ways pending machine, software and printer and of course the router. The first post referred to 'unable...

Re: Help with rules to allow network printer in UFW

Sorry, I did a bit more testing on another machine, it seems that at least there, allow out CUPS and allow out 9100 suffice. Perhaps it depends on the printer and operating system. I had a lot of trouble with Mint 16 and Samsung colour printer but Lubuntu was easy to set up and found the printer dri...

Re: Help with rules to allow network printer in UFW

It depends what IP address the router gives out. The 192 range is common but NOT alone. There are others used. When setting up ufw you need to be specific, allow out everything just negates the whole issue of a firewall. Or for that matter allow in items unless you need them. sudo allow out proto tc...

VirtualBox install takes many hours

Just a little observation - just in case I have forgotten something. I decided to install Mint Debian (latest) on one of my computers within Virtualbox. As of now it has been going for a number of hours and probably is about halfway. Is it possible that installing in a virtual machine slows down the...

Re: GUFW Firewall - any issues?

As has been mentioned before GUFW is merely a frontend (GUI) for UFW and that in itself is a frontend for iptables. Although I have GUFW I rarely use it, only to look at the rules. Again it is easier to use the Terminal. It depends entirely on what you want to do - and remember that iptables most li...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

What a brilliant line of posting - loved the sudo masturbation bit! Frankly, I am a born-again Mint user and rightly so. Now that XP has virtually bit the dust. The truth is that all OS have drawbacks and also good points, some very good. Mint 16 Mate I now use is by far the 'nicest and easiest' to ...

Re: Things to do after installing?

I should have stated - ufw uses the Terminal. That's the program. Sorry should be more specific, typed all late at night and needed coffee. However, the ufw firewall commands are typed as superuser (or root). UFW is a front-end for the iptables program that is installed with Mint 16. I use Mint 16 P...

Re: Things to do after installing?

Hmmm, nice question, however not all that helpful for somebody who seems to be a newbie? Nice chat about ufw firewall but not much what and how. I would set up ufw first then gufw. But and it's a big but (not mine I hasten to add) gufw is not the easiest to set up. Using the Terminal inputs is faste...

Solved Re: Network Printer not recognised

I forgot to mention the UFW rule that I had to add for the firewall to allow a network printer.
ufw allow proto tcp to 192.168.1.x (your printer IP address) from any port 9100
