Re: Howto: Remove Fortune messages in the Terminal
Why on Earth is this sophomoric preference (still) a default for Mint users? Should it caution me to think twice about entrusting my enterprise environment to a collegiate OS mindset? You might want to open up Package Manager and install a sense of humor. :D Would that be in the same reposit...

HI I was wondering if there is a any software to capture video or TV from a ATI Tv wonder video card that works with mint? For using my ATI TV Wonder VE card under Ubuntu (and Bianca) I've installed several programs: kdetv , which has a nice user interface. I like tvtime for its use of xmltv TV lis...

Is this a permissions thing or something else? A user shouldn't have access permission problems with files or subdirectories in their home directory -- unless perhaps you unwittingly used sudo to invoke tar with superuser honors. To assure that you've got proper permissions with Balsa's files and d...

what do you do if you have no .profile file? The closest i got was the bash_profile, but even then there were no other environment variables. Just use your .bash_profile file for Step 8 , instead of .profile (your login command shell won't even look for ~/.profile if it finds ~/.bash_profile first)...

This USB HDD read-only problem also exists for native Linux file-systems (e.g. ReiserFS) under Mint.

Telic could you post a link to the kiba-dock installation instructions? Same place as before: Install kiba-dock on Edgy Eft I'm really struggling without a .deb package. I'm still a noob at heart... I'm a Linux n00b too, having wandered onto the scene in March. The following procedure got Balsa up ...

I was looking at Sabayon too.... very intrigued. I think i might try a live cd. Whats that distro based upon? Sabayon is based on Gentoo Linux , so there's a mountain of online documentation and community support, plus a well-stocked software repository (see Portage and Kuroo ). It's clear that the...

Telic since you copied me foolishly, have you any thoughts? No, I didn't copy you, I used the same procedure as in the Ubuntu blog. Kiba dock has worked perfectly for me, easily and every time. I don't know what you've done differently somewhere. Last night I downloaded Sabayon Linux 3.3 miniEditio...

What makes you believe that this is the professional part of the board? This board is part of the official Mint website. In the absence of written guidelines, appointed staffers set the local community standards by example of their own conduct. This is the way the real world operates. Paid or not, ...

The problem is that the bios on this computer will not allow boot from USB. Without BIOS support, a power-up can't boot an OS directly off of a USB device. So, your GRUB must be located on a device that your BIOS can bootstrap, such as a floppy or CD (i.e. a removable medium that can accompany your...

The maximum file size with FAT32 is 4 GB. The maximum size for FAT16 is 2GB. There's nothing particularly innovative about mounting or linking a disk to a folder -- e.g. the JOIN command under MS-DOS can assign an arbitrary directory/file path to a drive, and later versions of MS Windows have LINKD ...

Ideally, software should detect if a copy of itself is already running, and gracefully avoid clobbering itself or the system operation. ... But we are running a multi-user + multi-tasking operating system  Hence being able to run the same program again and again is not a bug, it's a feature ....

When you use sudo and enter a valid password, Bianca gives you about 15 minutes to use sudo again without being asked for your password. Keep this in mind whenever your Evil Nemesis is lurking around. If less than 15 minutes has passed since you entered your password for sudo , and you get up and le...

Would you be so kind as to list you steps of installation, mainly where everything came from? I installed Beryl according to the Mint Wiki . I installed Kiba-Dock using the instructions on the page that you've linked to in this thread. And I got gDesklets using the Mint Synaptic repository. Instead...
