Re: VGA socket on my laptop no output

Solved = Elsewhere on this VERY good forum, I found the following = Edit the Grub menu line = linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff Add a space, and then video=VGA-1:e This sorted it. I then did a permanent edit to the Grub file so that it read = GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="qui...

SOLVED - VGA socket on my laptop no output

Hi all, I need to get an output from the VGA socket on an old Mint 17.3 laptop, for a particular "project". When I go to the usual "Configure Display Settings", only the Laptops panel shows up. I have checked in the BIOS and there is nothing in there that could disable it. I have tried "FN + F4" = n...

Re: Ad-Hoc (no router) Wi-Fi file sharing SOLVED

Just thought I would pop back here to say I solved it, and after all, it was dead easy !! On Andriod phone, go to the "Portable Wi-Fi Hospot" bit (it was under "Settings / other" on my phone). Go to "Configure Wi-Fi hotspot" bit and give it a short "friendly" name (I reckon no gaps and keep it short...

Re: Ad-Hoc (no router) Wi-Fi file sharing, can't get it working.

Thanks for all the suggestions folk :) In my case, the Bluetooth function on my phone will be already in use doing something else, so that isn't an option. I really need to be able to do simple file sharing between Android phone and laptop, when no router is present. Who would have thought it so tri...

Re: Ad-Hoc (no router) Wi-Fi file sharing, can't get it working.

Thanks for the input AZgl1500. However, I don't have any problem browsing my files in either direction whilst connected to my home network via my router (I use a variety of methods, ES File Explorer, Wi-Fi File Transfer etc). No problem there. What I am trying to do is be able to "see" files on my P...

Re: Ad-Hoc (no router) Wi-Fi file sharing, can't get it working.

Thanks for the input :)

Ad-Hoc (no router) Wi-Fi file sharing, NOW SOLVED

Hi all, not been here for a while. OS = Mint 18.3 - all updated and running fine. Objective = to be able to share files on my laptop to my Andriod phone, when away from any router. I believe this is known as "Ad-Hoc" - Yes? I Researched it. I created a new wireless connection on my laptop and set it...

Re: WiFi issue: HP Pavilion x360 Convertible on Linux Mint 17.3

That one again echo 'blacklist acer-wmi' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf Reboot Thank you so much. I've been battling with this same issue for 1/2 a day before I came across this solution. I'm not sure what it does, but it worked for the HP Pavilion X360 I was "Linux'ising" for a mate :)

Re: Samba share between LM17.3 and 18 Mate (Caja) problem

Well it worked :D Big THANK YOU Couple of minor points = On the LM17.3 machine, I didn't have gedit installed, but as I like it as a text file editor, I installed it. After that, on that machine it all went like clockwork. I checked and the LM18 machine could see the files on the LM17.3 machine (aft...

Samba share between LM17.3 and 18 Mate (Caja) problem = SOLVED

Another day of my life wasted  Laptop running LM17.3 Mate with Caja. Samba installed. Samba button is present in Control Centre. A personal folder appears to be "shared" ok. Workgroup = workgroup. Desktop running LM18, installed Samba and followed instructions as per here = First, you need to ...

Re: Problem with USB to Serial (RS232) port adapter (Ham radio related)

Ah, right, thanks folks. I see from checking those links, and I also checked the makers website, that this thing is not what I thought it was. I see now the relays are nothing to do with the RTS and DTR pins of an RS232, but are controlled by codes sent from special software. This makes this board u...

Re: Problem with USB to Serial (RS232) port adapter (Ham radio related)

It's just occurred to me, if this board only has one serial port, as shown by:- dmesg | grep tty gives me:- john@john-Vostro-1500 ~ $ dmesg | grep tty [ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled [ 14.854661] usb 5-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 Why does it have 4 relays on it? I could understand...

Re: USB to Serial (RS232) port adapter for Linux (Ham radio related)

What are you trying to do with the USB serial adapter? Digital modes? What radio? Ah, sorry for not replying, I have been stupidly ragging at this bone for pretty much 2 days, and I thought you were just curious as to what I was up to. Which is, trying to set up PSK31 (and maybe other) data modes o...

Problem with USB to Serial (RS232) port adapter (Ham radio related)

OK, 2 solid (long) days at this now and ZERO results  :x I just want to use my newly acquired USB to serial port adapter, complete with it's built in relays to switch a PTT (line for using PSK31 etc). dmesg | grep tty gives me:- john@john-Vostro-1500 ~ $ dmesg | grep tty [ 0.000000] console [t...

Netgear WG111V2 not being "seen" = SOLVED :-)

OK, I'm not a total newby, but stuck on this, and I promised the guy he could have his nice Dell Desktop back tomorrow, all Linux'd up and wireless. I have used Netgear WG111 USB adapters loads of times with no issue, but this one  Fresh build = 64 bit Mint 17.3, fully up to date. Plugging it ...
