Re: No Network sharing after update level 3

Fun Fact: In Mint 19 Samba will automatically register itself via multicast (avahi ) thanks to someone at Ubuntu who finally got around to reading the instruction manual from samba and realized he should have compiled support for it years ago. It will do it through another method but still using ava...

Re: No Network sharing after update level 3

All i can suggest is adding a multicast dns registration file to all of your Mint machines: Create a file: /etc/avahi/services/samba.service With this content: <?xml version="1.0" standalone='no'?> <!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd"> <service-group> <name replace-wildcards="yes">SMB ...

Re: Help! Messed up FSTAB

/etc/fstab tells you how to do this in the file itself: # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> So from blkid: /dev/sdd1: LABEL="cxx" UUID="af03fae6-94d9-45fe-9770-678672dab24e" TYPE="ext4" <file system> == LABEL=cxx OR UUID=af03fae6-94d9-45fe-9770-678672dab24e <mount point> == ...

Re: Random timestamp changes on read-only SAMBA share

This is more an FYI as I have no great insight into this particular problem but your two share definitions differ by more than just its "read only" setting. Samba will interpret your [YY] share this way: [YY] path = /mnt/YY available = yes valid users = user read only = yes browseable = yes public =...

Re: [SOLVED] Bookmark folder in a mounted partition

If so, it's because of a bug in ntfs-3g preventing non-root users to mount it. Why do you want non-root users mounting partitions? non-root users are always prevented from mounting any partitions. The "user" option in fstab allows a non-root user the ability to mount a partition - But only if the p...

Re: Bookmark folder in a mounted partition

LABEL=NTFS /mnt/NTFS ntfs windows_names,user,noatime 0 0 **His partitions have no labels. ** The user option in this context is irrelevant. ** And if he tries to restore a file he sent to the trash he will not be able to because the mounted partition is owned by root so he would need to add a uid=b...

I don't agree with the way MattyBoy is going about this but rather than cause chaos I have only one recommendation: Stop using Disks.

As I recall Xed is a fork of Pluma which is a fork of Gedit2 so it already is using gedit.

Re: gksudo dropped in LM 19 - goodness knows what else

pkexec requires a policykit "rule" for ever application that wants to use it. In Xubuntu one is already created for thunar ( /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.xfce.thunar.policy ) and one is already created for mousepad ( /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/com.ubuntu.pkexec.mousepad.policy ). In Mint's XFCE...

Re: Automatically connect to server for 1 of multiple users on Linux Mint 18.3 computer

Not if it's mounted under /media. It's "hard wired" to do that. What you could do is go back to having it mount under /mnt but bookmark it so it shows up on the side panel all by itself.. //192.168.x.xxx/PelleAdd /mnt/PelleAdd cifs uid=1000,gid=1000,dir_mode=0770,nounix,credentials=/home/pelle/.samb...

Re: Canonical giving up on Ubuntu desktop.

The "having given up on innovating on the desktop" in that quote refers to "Unity" not the Linux desktop itself. They never had any control over the entirety of the Linux desktop. If the latest desktops are more buggy than before it's because there are hundreds of parts that make it up and there is ...

Re: gksudo dropped in LM 19 - goodness knows what else

Fun fact : The only distribution that enables a one-to-one substitution of pkexec for gksu automatically for its default editor AND file manager is Xubuntu 18. OK ... OK ... there are 15642 Linux distros out there so there may be another. pkexec requires a policykit "rule" for ever application that...

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup

By "not showing up in Nemo" you mean it's not showing up on the side panel of nemo. That is because your mount point is not under /media or your home directory. This is by design. You can either: [1] Change your mount point to /media/backup [2] Add the silly x-gvfs-show option to your fstab line: LA...

Re: Avahi + Samba on Mint 18.2 network shares not visible

security = share will disable samba ( smbd ) from running since it is no longer a valid option so I would comment it out again. The problem is somewhere else. I don't know what it is at the moment but if from your own machine you can't access your own shares by ip address either it sure sounds like ...

Re: Avahi + Samba on Mint 18.2 network shares not visible

Just to make sure disable the firewall this way: sudo ufw disable Can you ping this machine from another machine: ping -c3 i7-7700HQ.local And take a look at your /etc/nsswitch.conf file. You should have a "hosts" line that looks like this: hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns Is mdns4_m...
