Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

Otherwise you may end up with the graphical programs changing ownership of files in your home directory to root, which can cause lots of issues. Thanks, looks like that was what I was after. Although I'm still skeptical that using gksudo makes any real difference beyond being a GUI to enter your pa...

Re: equifax hack

we are likely to get some hulabaloo and then a weak, ineffective response. That is my fear as well. A lot of indignation from elected officials and someone may get fired yet Equifax is allowed to survive to mess up another day. This has been going on for a while: Equifax Hackers Stole 200k Credit C...

Or do what saved Battlestar Galactica from the Cylon malware attack. Get them off the fracken network. Equifax began in 1899. I am fairly certain there was no internet back then. The only people who understand network security are the Chinese and the Russians so unless Equifax asks one of them to s...

Re: Newbie Trouble getting access to Windows 7 machine on network

THe problem with disabling SMB1 on the samba server end ( min protocol = SMB2 ) or disabling it on the server end of any operating system is that by default the Linux client is not able to handle that. Windows and macOS will have no problem with it but the Linux client will. If you disable it on Min...

Re: Newbie Trouble getting access to Windows 7 machine on network

All operating systems that offer SMB / Samba services to the network will eventually disable SMB1. It is in reaction to things like WannaCry and a host of other nasties. I don't keep up with what is happening to Win7 but it's possible you received an update that disabled it. I'm a "Windows Insi...

Re: Newbie Trouble getting access to Windows 7 machine on network

Either you or someone / something else disabled SMB1 on your Win7 machine.

By default the file managers in Linux only speak SMB1. You can fix this but it comes at a price: You will lose the ability to browse for machines on your network. Please see this HowTo: Samba Without SMB1.

Re: Webdav - mounting & syncing folder?

I've never used WebDAV so I can't help you with [2] but you might want to look into gigolo for [1].

You can use it to connect to it, then bookmark it, then have it automatically mount it at login.

Re: asked a million times... and now again: Mint 18.1&2 file sharing

[1] You didn't answer my questions.

[2] You didn't post the output of the net usershare command.

Right now based on your output you have no folders shared so there is nothing for the Windows machine or any other machine to access.

Re: asked a million times... and now again: Mint 18.1&2 file sharing

I have two mint computers, two windows 10 computers, they NEED to see files from one mint computer. On the Mint computer that you want all these machines to access open a terminal and run this command: hostname For the sake of examples let's say your host name on that box is linuxmintbox. *** On th...

Re: How to get access to a shared folder on a Windows 7 machine.

Do you have control over all these machines or at least the "SECRETARIA-PC" machine? The best way to resolve this issue if to assign a static ip address to that machine and then bookmark it in Thunar. That can be done within the Windows machine or you could configure the router to assign a...

Re: Linux Share To Windows

I looked at the HowTo in the link. There is a special place in hell for HowTo writers who tell new users to use vi as an editor. It appears that you use KDE which I do not use myself but open a terminal ( konsole in KDE ) and run: kdesudo kate /etc/samba/smb.conf And just add the following to the en...

Re: Mint sees MS workgroup but wants a password

How do I access the MS 7 folders without a password? You don't. You can create a user on the Windows machine for samba purposes and use that one. I use smbuser and give it a password of smbuserpw. Some folks actually use their Linux user name and password which sounds a little odd but it does work....

If 18.1 works and 18.2 doesn't I'd stick with 18.1 or move on to Ubuntu.

Since Windows is involved here you might want to go through the checklist: Samba Browsing Problems Checklist
