Re: Question about partitions and file storage

There is a bug that makes a bind mount undesirable today. The bind works but you get multiple icons on the desktop and in the file manager with the same name if the bind is made to a folder in the home directory or under /media. Anyhoo, bindfs still works: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?...

Re: Change permissions for internal drive (non system)

UUID=c073eb56-b3ae-4641-ad35-b2c49bfa74de /mnt/a_useful_name ntfs nosuid,windows_names,nodev,nofail,gid=1004 0 0 I don't think that will give him what he wants. It will still mount with owner = root. It's true that he will change the group to 1004 but it doesn't really matter because the permission...

Re: Change permissions for internal drive (non system)

An NTFS partition has no Linux permissions so when you mount it in Linux you create a "view" that gives it the appearance that it does. It does not alter the file structure of the partition itself like it does when you do a chmod or chown on a Linux partition. So you can run any number of mounts to ...

Re: How to do advanced Samba file sharing via script

1. On the Windows computer which only has guest access, I can see all the shared folders, a login dialog is shown when I try to access them. Is it possible to only see folders which are available to guest users. I know it doesn't make sense since you need to see the folders , but I was wondering if...

Re: Change permissions for internal drive (non system)

I'm not sure how you ask the Mint installer to automatically mount the partition. What is the Mint installer? When you install Mint it asks for Installation Type . Should you select Something Else you tell it that it's NTFS and where you want it mounted. Behold the Mint Installer ( brought to you b...

Re: Sharing a folder Mint Mate 19

What is the full path to the folder being shared? What you are describing happens when you mount something to /media/your-user-name/XXX. One way around this is to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line add this one: force user = your-user-name Then restart smbd: sudo...

Re: Networking 2 computers

OK altair4, I pinged and the machines are not on the same network Samba or any other file transfer protocol will only work in this context if they are in the same network. That will happen if they are both connected to the same router. Bring the laptop to the router and connect to it with an Ethern...

Re: Networking 2 computers

I will deal with the printer problem later, right now I wan't to try to get my computers talking to each other. Does anyone know of any documentation which walks you through the steps to create a network in linux mint cinnamon 19.1? On the desktop run this command to find the hostname: hostname Go ...

Re: How to do advanced Samba file sharing via script

You do need to create samba passwords for the user accounts. You will also need to modify the permissions of the target shared folder to accommodate the write unless User A on the client is the same User A on the server and User A already owns the folder. The net usershare command only deals with sh...

Re: Networking 2 computers

I can't speak to the printer issue. Printers just show up automatically for me. Problably the printers I use. But as far as samba is concerned it's automatic between Mint19 machines the instant you install samba ( as in sudo apt install samba ). Samba and Ubuntu made it so. I suspect you still have ...

Re: How to do advanced Samba file sharing via script

I can't help you with the scripting of the whole process because I'm not good at scripting but samba itself provides a command line tool called usershares that can create a class of shares you might find useful. It has a horrible syntax but taking your two examples run from a live session of Mint: D...

Re: Standard user or Admininstrator?

I had used Users and Groups earlier today to set up a non-Admin user account. I also added a new group. I shut Linux and when I restarted, was not prompted to choose a user nor enter a password. So I went back in to Users and Groups to do it again. Neither the User I created nor the Group were ther...

Re: Simple question on drive icons

I have never seen so many gvfs mount options in one place outside of the documentation. Not a fan of those either but I wonder if the 2TBData in ,x-gvfs-icon=2TBData doesn't actually exist. I forget where these are supposed to be ... maybe /usr/share/pixmaps? Easy enough to find out I suppose. ** un...

Re: Some questions about NTFS in fstab and their ownership

Followed the links and executed your very clear instructions, but every partition with the ~215,000 files and folders in them remained a "Read-only file system" . All NTSF drives are using the same fstab settings, UUID=1E9A91139A90E893 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults 0 2 If you had followed all the...

Can't help you.

You either didn't unmount the share or you didn't set this up correctly on the server would be my guess.

Re: Using samba via bash script

If you are currently accessing the share through your file manager this is the command the file manager uses in the background: gio mount smb://server/share FYI: This is what an application called gigolo will do as well and it can be set up to automount the share. If you are interested: HowTo: Using...

Re: Failed to mount windows share: Connection timed out [SOLVED]

Then it's what I said above. Unmount the share then access it again and you will get prompted for credentials.
