Re: Worried about the future: Linux Mint 19
Um ... going to have to agree with Pjotr again. Synaptic installs just fine on Ubuntu 18.04 - I just did it. It's a good thing it does install since the "Ubuntu Software" application seems to be inebriated. If I search for samba the only entry is: UbuntuSoftware.png I have no intention of installing...

Re: pdfsam - how acces NAS folder structure
When you go to nemo smb://NAS/ShareName the system will create a mount point under: /run/user/$UID/gvfs Where $UID is your user id number. So for example nemo smb://NAS/ShareName would produce a mount point of /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=nas,share=sharename I don't use pdfsam but if it can ...

Re: gksu removed from the repo's of Ubuntu 18.04
Also, I thought "gksu" changes permissions the same way "sudo" does but "gksudo" doesn't? One is a symbolic link to the other: ls -al /usr/bin/gksudo lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Oct 2 2012 /usr/bin/gksudo -> gksu And no it does not - did not - change permissions the way sudo does - um - I mean did: te...

Re: Cannot change the ownership ntfs drive contents
An ntfs partition by default in Linux will mount with owner = group = root but with permissions of 777 meaning everyone and your Aunt Tilly can add and delete anything they want.

Re: Cannot change the ownership ntfs drive contents
The reason a chown has no affect is that the NTFS partition has no linux permissions bits to change. NTFS in Linux is mounted as a "view" that makes it appear to have Linux permissions. So if you want to change ownership of the mounted partition you have to specify that in fstab. So if for example y...

Re: gksu removed from the repo's of Ubuntu 18.04
Using sudo gedit /etc/fstab runs the entire gedit process as the root user, with full system wide privileges. As noted you can do it instead with the gvfs admin:// paths: gedit admin:///etc/fstab Or in Nautilus press Ctrl+L and type the admin:// path and then any text file opened from there opens f...

Re: gksu removed from the repo's of Ubuntu 18.04
Although you mitigated the use of sudo with the -H switch it points out the issue Pjotr made in his original post: And for editing system config files, it almost feels as if we're being pushed towards abusing "sudo". In Ubuntu 18.04 this runs fine: sudo gedit /etc/fstab Well ... it doesn't run fine ...

Re: gksu removed from the repo's of Ubuntu 18.04
We don't need no stinkin' gksu. We Linux desktop users have an understandable feeling of superiority over those poor Windows and macOS users. You can't feel superior if you are part of the majority. Removing gksu and making all of those HowTo's out there that specify it's use useless is just a way t...

Re: [SOLVED] CIFS vs Shared Folder in Windows Server 2012 R2
I don't know if you will get notification of this post but I have a question. Is bob@dude-uk the actual user name or is the dude-uk part really a domain? THe reason I ask is because on Win10 you can log into the machine with a Microsoft Account name which is in fact an email address. So if I log int...

Re: Network Discovery in only one direction + # of users question
There's two things about your post that has made me hesitant to reply: It's not clear if you want a samba solution or something else like AFP. I have no experience in AFP. HFS+. I have very little practically no experience with hfs+ on Linux. 1. I can log into my Mint machine from my Macs as long as...

Re: CIFS vs Shared Folder in Windows Server 2012 R2
I'm afraid I do not have an answer to your original question but I may have an insight into this one: Nemo can mount the shared folders. Unless you have modified smb.conf yourself the highest negotiated smb dialect that Nemo can attain is smb1 ( NT1 in samba-speak and vers=1.0 in CIFS-speak ). mount...

Re: Need help networking with Win 7
Anyways, would you mind showing me how to do it the other way also... like doing a direct access like that from the Win 7 machine to the Linux laptop shared folder? It's fine if you can't, but that would be a big bonus for me. :) It's easier on Windows: Open Explorer ( file manager ) and type: \\19...

Re: Need help networking with Win 7
Start slow. [1] Can you ping from Mint the Win7 machine by it's ip address: ping -c3 <win7-ip-address> [2] If the ping is successful run the samba client command to get a list of your shares and post the output. This is going to get tricky depending on how things are set up: smbclient -L <win7-ip-ad...

Re: How to auto mount ntfs partition on dual boot windows-linux to share files multi user
To achieve what you want, simply create the mount point, set permissions on it then mount the volume in fstab. It's just the opposite. All mounts to a mount point override the permissions of the mount point with their own. All mounts - NTFS, ext4, cifs, ... Anyhoo ... it looks like Mute Ant already...

Re: Cannot view and copy files using 2 Linux machines
In network folder it seems I have an icon to many: LOU-P35-DSL3, lou-P-35-DSL3 SMB and lou-ThinkPad-T440 SMB. Actually that's normal. The host name without the SMB attached at the end LOU-P35-DSL3 is Samba finding netbios hosts the way Windows does it. The host name with the SMB attached at the end...

By "delete" do you mean going into the desktop and "un-sharing" them? I do not know how to answer that since I don't know what is in "a" and "public1"?
