Re: Mint 19 Tara avahi/mdns not working

It would be interesting to see if the same thing happens to Ubuntu 18.04 ( or perhaps Xubuntu 18.04 ). You don't need to install it just run it from a Live session off the install medium.

Then you would know if it's an Ubuntu thing or a Mint thing.

Re: can't write files to external hard disk

Well, I don't know about anyone else but I'm confused. The "usb-TOSHIBA" thingy is not referenced in blkid or fstab yet it's mounting under /mnt which it would never do naturally. For all you Disks users is this something Disks does? I'm assuming the TOSHIBA thing is the "external hard drive" in que...

Please post the output of the following commands so the folks here know what's going on:

Code: Select all

sudo blkid -c /dev/null

Code: Select all

cat /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

ls -al /mnt

Re: Need help with networking

The shares which do not work are on /media/ user /drivex/folder. Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line add this one: force user = user Replace "user" with the same name as in /media/ user /drivex/folder Save the file then restart smbd: sudo service smbd restart Thi...

Re: Need help with networking

Since you are using Mint Cinnamon you could create a samba usershare: Open Nemo and right click a folder you own like your Public folder. Then select Sharing Options > Slide the switch to Share this folder and check all the boxes. You will create a writeable share of your Public folder. You have a l...

Re: Mint 19 Tara avahi/mdns not working

I don't have a lot of experience with avahi troubleshooting because I have never had it fail except for one condition and I'm not sure if fits your symptoms. Run the following command: host -t SOA local It should come back with something like: Host local not found: 2(SERVFAIL) OR Host local not foun...

Re: Need help with networking

Gadmin-samba was designed for Version 2 of Samba. We are at Samba Version 4 which is why you got all those error messages. It made a mess of your smb.conf which has some impact on the samba client. "Samba" is system-config-samba and that was built for Version 3 of Samba. Luckily it won't run unless...

Re: Mint 19 - System-config-samba GUI not working

This is not your fault. You apparently installed something called gadmin-samba. It has no place in the repositories of modern operating systems. It is unsupportable at this point so I would suggest you restart: There is a backup factory-fresh copy of smb.conf that you can use to replace the one you ...

Re: LM18.3 can't see LM19

The LM18.3 laptop can see the shares I've set up on the two LM19 machines. The two LM19 machines can see each other. Neither LM19 machine can see the LM18.3 machine Everyone can see the LM19 samba hosts because Ubuntu read the installation manual for Samba when it set things up in Ubuntu 18.04 ( Mi...

Re: Mint 19 - System-config-samba GUI not working

@ec91066, You really have two questions: I've been trying to share a folder in Mint19 and, fist, I tried to do it through Nemo's samba integration. Doesn't work... I can't access that share from my laptop wich is running MInt also - Connection refused after logging in with my username and password (...

Re: Poll: are forums password requirements too complicated?

I have a completely different perspective on all this. I don't think the forum should have any passwords. The way I see it the NSA, CIA, the government of China, preteen Russian kids, Google, Amazon, etc.. already has access to all of my records and financial accounts. The only reason I haven't been...

Take possession of the mounted share: [1] Unmount it first: sudo umount /mnt/shares/PCgeorge [2] Then change the mount to this: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.178.17/PCgeorge /mnt/shares/PCgeorge -o vers=1.0,username=George,password=yyyy,rw,uid=1000,nounix Note : uid=1000 will make the mounted share o...

I do not know. I don't know how the NAS is doing samba. Re: How to map a WD NAS?

I don't know what to tell you but based on your last post you don't have a user named george regardless of capitalization.

Run the following on the NAS:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/passwd | grep eorge
Does George, george, or perhaps pcgeorge show up?

Re: How to map a WD NAS?

I don't know about Debian but in Ubuntu you can't create a user name with upper case letters: tester@vub1804:~$ sudo adduser George adduser: Please enter a username matching the regular expression configured via the NAME_REGEX[_SYSTEM] configuration variable. Use the `--force-badname' option to rela...
