Re: How do I share a directory to linux and windows PCs on a local network in Mint 18.3 Sylvia Xfce?

@jameskga, This post is not a contradiction to anything Quexos posted. It's just some things you might want to keep in mind. [1] You have successfully created your samba shares on Mint though thunar. Those share "definitions" are located in /var/lib/samba/usershares and based on your later...

Re: SMB2/SMB3 on NAS can't connect

That is a very confusing post since I don't know what you are doing where: It was working prior to me forcing smb min 2 and max 3. Server or Client? Did you add this: server min protocol = SMB2 server max protocol = SMB3 Or this: client min protocol = SMB2 client max protocol = SMB3 Did you do one o...

Re: How to connect to Synology NAS

If I understand correctly there is no alternative in Linux Mint for the W10 File Explorer, right-click computer, map network drive functionality? It's called a Bookmark. Connect to the share first then bookmark it. I just would like to be able to see my NAS folders in the Linux Mint "file expl...

Is the desire to browse the other machine on the lan or connect to it's shares? If you can ping the other machine - you didn't say how - then open a terminal and type: caja smb://hostname Or caja smb://hostname.local Or caja smb://ip-address Where hostname is the host name of the machine you are try...

Re: How do I share a directory to linux and windows PCs on a local network in Mint 18.3 Sylvia Xfce?

Thank you, that worked to share linux to Windows. I can make these private, but how do I set username and passwords for the folders? Unlike Windows Linux has a user name and two passwords not one. One is used to log into the box locally and the other is used for samba. You create the samba password...

Re: Samba sharing will not work.

Your symptoms are all over the map. It doesn't help that Mint made a mess of things when they decided not to install the samba server by default. "Nemo cannot handle "network" locations". Sounds like a missing package so install it: sudo apt install gvfs-backends Samba needs to b...

Re: Samba can not copy or delete directory

You want your directory mask to be 0777 not 0666 but I would suggest a different way. Change your share definition to this: path = /home/aimserver/share valid users = aimserver,aimcomp2,AIMCOMP2-PC read only = No writeable = Yes force user = aimserver "valid users" will restrict access to ...

Re: Create Samba Shares from Thunar

Yes, I keep forgetting Mint doesn't install samba by default any more. I'll add another step to the main HowTo. Thanks. which makes no sense because previous to trying to make a share in Mint I had no problems accessing Windows shares from Mint. Two different sambas. The samba server package samba i...

Re: Users cannot access auto-mounted ntfs and exfat partitions

What I have now is read only, just like group and others. Because this still isn't right: UUID=844C8EA14C8E8D9C /media/Data31 ntfs-3g uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=0022 0 0 Go back to the uid / gid you had before: UUID=844C8EA14C8E8D9C /media/Data31 ntfs-3g uid=rb,gid=users ,umask=0022 0 0 You can use a ...

Re: Connecting to network computers

I'm going to guess this is a samba question - not sure why. Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and add this line right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line: name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins If you have the samba server packages installed restart samba: sudo service smbd restart sudo service nmbd r...

Re: removable media files changed to root ownership

There are only two ways a usb device will automatically mount to /media/usb0 today:

[1] You added something to /etc/fstab and didn't declare it correctly.

[2] You installed the package usbmount.

I'm betting on [2] as the cause. Remove the damn thing:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove usbmount

Re: removable media files changed to root ownership

[1] Run the following command with the usb device connected: sudo blkid -c /dev/null Do you have any listing with a "LABEL=usb0"? [2] If you do not the only package I know of that mounts usb devices to /media/usb[0-7] is usbmount . It interferes with the current method of auto mounting th...

Re: Slow reads speeds with Samba shares

@coffee412, I don't know about AD specifically but SMB1 and network browsing for netbios names are linked. Cannot have one without the other. At least not yet. If this is an all Linux network or a Linux / macOS network an avahi service announcement will fix things but Windows remains the odd man out...
